URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 7) WITH DAN REARDON

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish suffered a tough setback a week ago against a very skilled Akron St. Vincent St. Mary’s squad, falling to the Irish at Stambaugh Stadium 35-28. St. V’s did a very good job limiting Irish standout Christian Lynch on the ground, as Lynch only totaled 66 rushing yards on 24 carries, averaging just under three yards-per-carry. The loss was a great experience builder though for the Ursuline, as SVSM is one of the toughest teams in the state in Division II, currently boasting a record of 6-1.

Now looking forward to this week, it is another chance for Ursuline to get redemption against a squad that defeated them a year ago, Villa Angela-St. Joseph. The Vikings defeated Ursuline 46-28 last season, gashing the Irish for 475 yards of total offense. VASJ was able to run the ball very effectively in last year’s battle as they had three different guys rush for over 100 yards on the ground. This game will also be at a very cool site, with the Vikings hosting the Irish at Baldwin Wallace’s collegiate stadium on Friday night.

In this week’s coaches’ corner, Irish Head Coach Dan Reardon discusses the hard-fought loss a week ago to SVSM, looking back at last year’s loss to VASJ, what his guys are doing to prepare this week in practice, and much more!

The Irish advance to the district tournament on Thursday at Sable Creek Golf Course in Hartsville. Columbiana, West Branch, and Champion will join them out of the sectional.

NO LUCK NEEDED FOR FITCH

YOUNGSTOWN OH-

The No. 15 ranked Austintown-Fitch Lady Falcons went on the road Tuesday evening to take on the Ursuline Lady Irish in a highly anticipated volleyball matchup. Fitch was coming in off a loss the night before, which was just their second of the year, and Ursuline was looking to pull the massive upset. That would ultimately not be the case as Fitch bounced back off the loss with a near perfect game against the Irish.

Set one went Fitch’s way thanks to an early fifteen-point run led by Jordan Smith that would culminate in a 25-7 win. Ursuline played a lot better in set two, but they were unable to put together any big runs and were only able to go blow for blow so long against this fantastic Fitch squad. Fitch grabbed an eight-point run and held on to that lead throughout the set and took the win 25-15. Ursuline would have to have an amazing finish to the night if they were going to take the third set, but Fitch remained just to fundamentally sound for a comeback to be allowed. Austintown-Fitch took the final set of the night thanks to a dominant performance from Jocelyn Jourdan, Jordan Smith, Avery Rosko, and Afton Roby who played nearly the entire night and finished the third set with a 25-11 victory over the Irish.

Austintown-Fitch picked up their thirteenth win of the season and will go back home to host Canfield on Thursday. Ursuline drops to (9-5) and will look to bounce back on the road on Thursday against Jackson-Milton.

LANDON LEADS THE WAY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Landon Charles is one of many athletes that Ursuline possesses on this year’s squad that can turn a small play into a big one. Charles, who has been one of the most impressive players on the defensive side of the ball, coming into Week 7 tied for third on the team with 35 tackles, truly embodies everything it takes to be successful within this program. Landon is also one of seven different players on defense this year for the Irish to record an interception, which came back in Ursuline’s victory over Brookfield in Week 1.

In this week’s Player Profile, Landon was able to talk about last week’s big victory over Chaney, what to look forward to in this week’s matchup vs. Akron St. Vincent St. Mary’s, and also some fun things about himself that most fans may not know about!

LUCAS LOVES THE TRENCHES

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – There have been many standout football players that have dawned the Green and Gold for the Ursuline Irish throughout the years, and Isaac Lucas. fits right into that long list. The Ball State commit is one of the many linemen for Ursuline who came into this year with prior varsity. experience, and he is one of the big reasons why the Irish have had such high expectations this season after advancing all the way to the state championship game a year ago. If the Irish can find a way to take down the Akron St. Vincent St. Mary’s Fighting Irish this week, a feat they haven’t done successfully in a decade, it will take a group effort, and Lucas can be one of the big names to look at to lead the way.

In this week’s Player Profile, Isaac talks about the task at hand this week, his journey through high school playing for Ursuline, and much more!
