SOUTHERN ENDS TOUGH TIMES AGAINST WELLSVILLE

SALINEVILLE OH- In a thrilling five-set showdown, Southern secured a remarkable victory over Wellsville with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 13-25, 30-28, and 15-12. This triumph marked a significant turning point for Southern, ending a long-standing losing streak against Wellsville and halting the latter’s remarkable run of consecutive titles.

Southern, with a record of 15-3 (10-3), displayed tremendous determination and resilience throughout the match. Ashley Shroades was a force to be reckoned with, recording a remarkable 25 kills, showcasing her prowess as an offensive powerhouse.

Rylee Mellott orchestrated the offense brilliantly, contributing 40 assists to her team’s victory. Her precise setting and decision-making were instrumental in Southern’s success.

Hannah Reynolds proved to be a formidable presence at the net, tallying 12 kills and an impressive 8 blocks. Her defensive prowess and ability to thwart Wellsville’s attacks were crucial in the match.

Kennedy Lewis anchored the defense with 18 digs, ensuring that Wellsville’s offensive onslaught was met with solid resistance.

This victory not only snapped Southern’s 11-game losing streak against Wellsville but also brought an end to Wellsville’s remarkable five-year streak of consecutive titles in the EOAC.

On the Wellsville side, Presley Stokes led the charge with an incredible 31 kills, displaying her dominance as an offensive force. Bella Poppelriter contributed 7 kills and 2 aces, while Makenzie Nixon orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and added 7 kills of her own.

Southern looks to build on this momentum as they face United at home next, while Wellsville aims to rebound in their upcoming match against Columbiana at home.

EP BUSTS THROUGH FOR REFLECTIVE WIN

EAST PALESTINE, OH- You’ve been able to see the progression all season, and on Friday the East Palestine Bulldogs were able to reflect on more than just their new chrome helmets, as East Palestine secured their first win of the season by defeating Wellsville with a score of 40-22.

The victory marked a significant milestone for East Palestine, who now stands at 1-6 for the season with a conference record of 1-3 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. On the other side, Wellsville fell to a matching 1-6 record for the season, with a similar 1-3 conference record.

The game kicked off with East Palestine taking the lead as Owen Jurjavcic powered through with a 3-yard touchdown run, putting them ahead 7-0 with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Wellsville responded with a touchdown of their own, as Clayten Kersey executed a 1-yard touchdown keeper with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, narrowing the score to 7-6.

Richie Dowling then added to the excitement, breaking free for a 24-yard touchdown run with 2:42 left in the second quarter, giving Wellsville a 14-7 lead.

However, East Palestine wasn’t ready to concede. Jesse Lipp’s 2-yard touchdown run with just 28 seconds left in the half leveled the game at 14, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

East Palestine surged ahead in the third quarter when R.J. May caught an 18-yard pass from Jurjavcic, pushing them into a 20-14 lead with 6:55 left on the clock.

Unfortunately, the game took a somber turn when Wellsville’s Clayten Kersey suffered an injury during a sideline run and collision, leading to a temporary pause in the game. Kersey was stretchered off the field, and our thoughts go out to him for a full and speedy recovery.

Despite the setback, East Palestine continued to extend their lead. Jurjavcic added another touchdown to his tally with a 9-yard rushing touchdown at 1:25 left in the third quarter, increasing their advantage to 27-14.

As the game entered the final quarter, East Palestine’s Noah McKay powered through the middle with a 16-yard touchdown run, widening the gap to 33-14 with 10:36 left in the contest.

Jesse Lipp sealed the victory for East Palestine with a 4-yard scamper into the end zone at the 6:21 mark, bringing the score to 40-14.

Wellsville fought valiantly to the end, with Richie Dowling contributing one last touchdown for his team, an 18-yard run with 2:37 left, closing the score gap to 40-22.

With this hard-fought win under their belt, East Palestine looks ahead to their next challenge, as they prepare to host Columbiana next Friday. Meanwhile, Wellsville will be gearing up to face United in their upcoming matchup.

WELLSVILLE TURNS THE LIGHTS ON

WELLSVILLE OH- In a hard-fought battle, Wellsville celebrated their first win of the season with a resounding 14-0 victory over Leetonia.

The first quarter saw both teams locked in a defensive struggle, with neither able to find the end zone. However, the second quarter ignited with excitement as Terrell Watkins returned a punt an electrifying 58 yards for a touchdown at the 3:32 mark. The ensuing successful PAT put Wellsville ahead 7-0. However, an unusual delay occurred when the stadium lights briefly went out, adding an unexpected twist to the game.

When the action resumed in the third quarter, Watkins was determined to make another impact. He powered through the Leetonia defense with a 2-yard rushing touchdown at 4:12. With the successful PAT, Wellsville extended their lead to a commanding 14-0.

Despite the best efforts of both teams, the score held until the final whistle. Wellsville’s defense stood strong, denying Leetonia any scoring opportunities and sealing their first win of the season with an impressive 14-0 victory.

This victory marked a significant moment for Wellsville, providing a boost of confidence and morale. The team showcased their resilience and determination, securing a well-deserved win that their fans will surely celebrate.

CLIPPERS SNAP WELLSVILLE WIN STREAK; TAKE FIRST PLACE IN EOAC

COLUMBIANA OH- Life features everyday occurrences we all take for granted such as the sun coming up, fresh air to breath and electricity. Since 2017, winning games in the EOAC has also become one of those occurrences for Wellsville volleyball winning their previous 76 straight conference contests. The Columbiana Clippers knew all too well of the win streak as the Clippers had fallen 14 consecutive times during that span last defeating the Tigers in 2015. Tuesday night the undefeated Clippers were looking at possibly their best opportunity to finally defeat the Tigers in 8 years. Columbiana took full advantage of that opportunity sweeping Wellsville 25-21, 25-10, 25-10.

The contest started just as so many have previously as Wellsville would take an early 10-4 1st set lead. Columbiana would settle down reeling off 6 consecutive points to tie it at 10-10. The Tigers would maintain a 3 point advantage most of the first set before Columbiana would take the lead at 22-21 on their way to claiming the 1st set victory 25-21.

The momentum of that 1st set win carried over to set number 2 as the Clippers raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back winning 25-10. The 3rd set saw the Tigers come out proving they were not going to go away easy claiming an early 8-5 lead. Following a side out, Columbiana’s Kelsey Cameron stepped to the service line looking to help her teams chances of a 3 set sweep. Cameron did more than help as the Junior would go onto serving 14 straight points guiding the Clippers to a commanding 20-9 lead. Ava Heinrich would finish the night off with 4 straight of her own as the Clippers would take the 3rd set 25-10 setting off an an emotional celebration on the floor amongst her teammates.

Ellie Jackson lead the Clippers with a strong all around performance posting 8 kills, 9 assists, and 10 digs.  Cameron added 15 points, 7 aces, 3 kills, while Heinrich contributed 16 points, 6 aces, and 10 digs. Cameron Perkins set the table all night tallying 15 assists, teammate Maryn Hepler would add 12 digs and 4 kills to the stat sheet on the night.

Wellsville was led by Presley Stokes 7 kills, 5 assists and 1 block. Wellsville (7-3, 6-1) returns home Thursday looking to stop a two game losing streak as they host United.  Columbiana (9-0, 7-0) has little time to celebrate with a quick turnaround as they host Heartland Christian on Wednesday.

SOUTHERN KEEPS THE PACE

WELLSVILLE OH- Southern delivered a dominating performance on the road, showcasing their prowess in a commanding 42-7 victory over Wellsville. The first quarter saw Ryan Exline running for a 17-yard touchdown, putting Southern on the board, although the two-point conversion attempt fell short. In the second quarter, a snap over the quarterback’s head led to a safety, extending Southern’s lead to 8-0. Landon Heffner’s 33-yard rushing touchdown, followed by Wellsville’s Terrell Watkins’ 3-yard run, brought the score to 15-7 at halftime.

Southern continued their relentless assault in the third quarter, with Landon Heffner breaking free for a 46-yard TD run. Although the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, Southern maintained a 21-7 lead. Heffner added to his impressive night with a 31-yard rushing TD, followed by Ryan Exline’s 22-yard run, both with successful extra points from Brody Hamilton, making it 35-7. In the fourth quarter, Ryan Exline sealed the victory with a dazzling 61-yard rushing TD, resulting in a final score of 42-7 in favor of Southern. Their dominant road performance showcased their football prowess, leaving Wellsville with a challenging night on the gridiron.

TIGERS CAUGHT BY THE TAIL IN OPENER

WELLSVILLE, OH- The Wellsville Tigers were turning the page on a new era in Tiger Country, as new coach Camden Douglas looked to make a quick impression in his young career.  Steubenville Central Catholic had other plans in a 37-6 victory to open the season.

The game ignited with an explosive start as Tyler Ialenti of SCC showcased his prowess, darting 16 yards for a touchdown just 5 minutes and 31 seconds into the game. His successful point-after attempt put SCC in the lead at 8-0.

The second quarter was a seesaw battle as Wellsville’s Clayton Kersey answered back with a determined 1-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap to 8-6 with 4 minutes and 26 seconds left. However, SCC’s Tyler Ialenti displayed his versatility, embarking on a 50-yard run for another touchdown, bolstering SCC’s lead to 15-6 with just 1 minute and 58 seconds remaining in the half. The excitement didn’t stop there, as Ialenti struck again with a 4-yard rushing touchdown just as the clock expired, securing a 2-point conversion in the process and sending SCC into halftime with a 23-6 lead.

The third quarter unfolded with more fireworks as Tyler Sprochi showcased his speed and agility, returning a kick an impressive 65 yards for a touchdown just 15 seconds into the quarter. SCC’s extra point kick extended their lead to 30-6, putting the game firmly in their control.

The fourth quarter saw no respite in SCC’s dominance. Tommy Pergi broke through the defense with a 23-yard run for a touchdown, adding to SCC’s commanding lead. The successful extra point kick brought the score to 37-6 with 4 minutes and 22 seconds left, solidifying SCC’s triumph.

 

TIGERS SNAG A SHARE OF THE EOAC

WELLSVILLE – On Monday night, the Wellsville boys basketball team secured a 67-42 home victory over Valley Christian. The Tigers improved their season record to 13-6 and were able to grab a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Isaiah Greathouse led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points, followed by Eddie Stock with 17, Jaxon Brewer with 14, and Gavin Kountz contributed with 13 points of his own.

Over on the Valley Christian side, Raquan Bell had 13 points and Jon’trel Mixon had 11 as they were the only Eagles to reach double figures. Wellsville was able to keep the Valley Christian scoring at bay as the Tigers never trailed throughout the game.

Wellsville will be back in action this evening, they will be hosting Catholic Central at 7:30 p.m.

TIGERS KEEP THEIR JAWS ON FIRST PLACE

LISBON, OHIO- The Lisbon Blue Devils were looking to get a little revenge as they took on the Wellsville Tigers. The Tigers edged the Blue Devils 53-51 in their first matchup. Trevor Siefke did it all for the Blue Devils scoring 25 points. Logan Stauffer also added 9 points, but it was not enough as Jaxon Brewer, Isaiah Greathouse, and Tyler Wilkins combined for 38 points and the Tigers edged the Blue Devils once again 53-46. The win keeps Wellsville in first place of the EOAC.

Wellsville will try to keep their spot on the top on Tuesday as they host Valley Christian.  The Blue Devils will try to get back on track when they take on United on Tuesday.

WRESTLING WEDNESDAY WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 6) FEATURING MASON SIMMS

On this episode of Wrestling Wednesday with Gary Althiser there were a bunch of OVAC recap. The YSN family had a ton of wrestlers shine bright in one of the biggest stages thd sport has to offer outside of the state tournament.  Beaver Local freshman Bobby Buchheit beat the top two seeds out to win a title. There is also a lot of big time tournaments on the horizon before we start district tournament talks, including the EOWL.

This episode’s special guest was Wellsville’s own Mason Simms.  Mason was another grappler that had an amazing run in the OVAC.  The senior leader of the Tigers is having maybe the best year of his career, and he’s put in the work to get there. This discussion lets even Gary who coaches Mason learn some new things about this senior superstar.  Check out Episode 6 of Wrestling Wednesdays only on YSN!

WELLSVILLE ELUDES INDIANS FOR ANOTHER EOAC WIN

WELLSVILLE OH- Wellsville has made themselves comfortable at the top of the EOAC.  While their margin is still only a game, the way they’ve been playing of late makes that feel like a mountain.  The Tigers rushed their way to another EOAC on Friday as they kept visiting Southern at bay.  Trailing by two points after one frame, the Tigers scored 20 points in the second to grab control of the game. They would never release it from their paws on the way to a 56-47 win.

Eddie Stock had a tremendous game for the Tigers leading the scoring with 17 points.  Jaxon Brewer shared that lead with 17 as well in a gritty effort.  Isaiah Greathouse was akso in double figures on the day with 11.  Tyrell Watkins was one point off of double figures with 9.

Southern was paced by Colton Soukup who was the best in the gym. He scored a game-high 20 points.  Brady Ketchum was also j  double figures with 12 points for the Indians.

After a weekend matchup with Beaver Local on Saturday, Wellsville will return to league action Tuesday against Columbiana.  Southern will hit the road again on Tuesday traveling to United.
