TIGERS EYES SET TO REGIONAL FINAL REMATCH

STRONGSVILLE OH- Since the end of last season, Wellsville has longed for a second chance at Monroeville. Coming in to this season, Wellsville and Monroeville had built quite a tournament rivalry. They’d met in two of the last three regional brackets, and the Eagles have gotten the better of the matchups. Last season it was a 4 set victory.  It took Wellsville 28 games, but they have finally locked in another archipelago with Monroevillle with state on the line.  Now the teams will meet for the third time in four years. The Tigers got there by sweeping Ashtabula St. John in the semifinals. (25-19 25-13 25-11)

Presley Stokes racked up a monster double double finishing with 27 kills, and 15 assists.  Bella Poppelriter led the teams in assists with 22, and served up a pair of aces.  Alana Amato was in double figure kills with 15, while leading the team in aces with 6.  Aubri Ramsey led the back row for the Tigers with 9 digs.

The rematch with Monroeville is slated to start at 2:00 on Saturday at Strongsville High School.  The winner of this match will pack their bags for Wright State for the State Semifinals on November 10th.

NOTHING AMATO WITH THE TIGERS

WELLSVILLE OH- The Tigers of Wellsville are one of the most successful volleyball teams you’ll find in our area.  The Tigers are now owners of three straight district championships. They have a huge mix of great defense, rhythm in their setting, and powerful hitters who can put calls away at a moment’s notice.  One of Wellsville’s biggest threats at the net is senior Alana Amato.

Amato has been a facet in this offense for quite some time. She has racked up over 1,000 kills in her career. That is not easy to do. Especially when you’re on a team that spreads the ball around so much, but Amati is just hard to stop. When she’s on her game she can hit any shot she has to in order to beat the opponents defense. Whether it be a cut shot, a.cross court screamer, or attacking the line, Amato has the Tigers covered.

A look at Alana’s numbers this season quickly tell the tale.  After their district championship, Amato checks in at 294 kills on the year. She averages 3.5 kills per set.  However, Amatos most impressive stat this season is her blocking ability. Alana has racked up 136 blocks at the net. She averages 1.6 blocks per set played.  Amato is no slouch in the back row either. She has dug up 212 digs while she’s in the back line.  Alana is truly a well rounded player that finds plenty of ways to contribute to the team.

Alana took the time this week to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. They talk about her senior season, how the team’s been banding together through adversity, and so much more. Be prepared for the Tigers regional matchup with the latest Wellsville player profile only on YSN!

TIGERS ARE HEADED RIGHT BACK TO REGIONALS

LISBON OH- Wellsville carried a 25 game winning streak in to Thursday’s district championship game. They hadn’t lost since their first game of the season to Western Reserve. Their championship opponent McDonsld boasted a win against that same Reserve team this season. But this was a different Tigers bunch. Focused, and highly motivated the Tigers swept a very good Blur Devil team.  (25-19 25-23 25-20)

Strong finishes to each set seemed to be the theme for Wellsville. In a back and forth set one, Wellsville pulled away late to earn the 25-19 win. In set 2, they jumped out to a big 17-6 lead before watching the Blue Devils climb all the way back to tie the set at 22-22. However, from that point the Tigers scored 3 of the next 4 to win 25-23.  Plays down the stretch of set 3 would tell the story as well as the Tigers win their third consecutive competitive set 25-20.

District player of the year Presley Stokes showed up big for the Tigers all night. But her leadership shined brightest in the third set after a long stoppage of play, she kept the team calm and they forged ahead to take the sweep.  Wellsville has been here before so you can imagine that not much would phase them.

McDonald was in their first program District Championship. That is particularly impressive since the program started just four seasons ago.  The Blue Devils end the season at 20-6.  A fairly young roster only graduates two seniors, so expect even more growth from the Blue Devils to come.

The Tigers advance to the Division IV Regional Semifinals. They will be matched up with Ashtabula St John on November 3rd at 7:30 in Strongsville.  They’ll be the second game of the night.

VALLEY WIGGLES FREE OF WELLSVILLE

WELLSVILLE OH- Valey Christian learned all too well on Friday night how hard it is to win a football game, no matter who you play. Coming in to their matchup with Wellsville, they were the heavy favorites. But the Tigers didn’t want to hear about it. They pushed and shoved Valley Christian all night. However, 12 unanswered points to close out the game would let the Eagles escape the upset 24-18.

Ja’Shaun Lindsey was a wrecking ball for the Eagles, and a big game changer. He ran for 118 yards on the night on 16 touches.  Jon’Trell Mixon ran for 83 yards, and 33 of them scored the game sealing touchdown. He scored another one earlier in the game as well when the Eagles trailed 18-12.

Isaiah Greathouse put in serious work for Wellsville. He ran for 2 touchdowns and passed another to Tyrell Watkins. He went 5/10 for 58 yards. The Tigers scored in each of the first 3 quarters, but failed to punch anything in in the final frame.

Valley Christian has one more game to complete their 10-0 regular season. They will host East Palestine on Saturday.  Wellsville will close out the season in Leetonia.

LISBON HAS LATE BURST TO VICTORY

WELLSVILLE OH- It was an offensive of shootout on Friday night as Wellsville welcomed in Lisbon. It was back and forth for the first three quarters, but in the final frame Lisbon scored 21 unanswered points to win 57-26.

Trevor Siefke had a good day tossing the rock going 14-21 for 181 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 8 times for 59 yards. The Blue Devils out gained Wellsville 336-274.  The Lisbon defense forces 4 interceptions. Austin Dailey had 2 of them one of which was returned for a 100 yard touchdown, Siefke added a pick to his stat sheet, Ryan Carpenter also picked the ball off.  Dailey was Siefke’s favorite target. He finished with 8 catches and 72 yards.

Isaiah Greathouse led Wellsville in rush yards with 15 attempts and 50 yards.  He also had a 66 yard kick off return for a touchdown.  Gavin Kountz went 5/12 through the air with 108 yards and 2 total touchdowns.

Lisbon will look to win again next week as they return home to host Leetonia.  Wellsville will have to hit the road traveling to United.

SOUTHERN CLAIMS BIG WIN OVER WELLSVILLE

SALINEVILLE, OH- Southern Local played host to Wellsville on a night that had a chill in the air, and the hospitality had a bit of the same in a 64-6 trouncing of the Tigers.

Let’s not forget that this rivalry goes back generations, and Southern emphatically made a point in the conference with 421 yards of offense while only allowing 66 total yards on defense.

It didn’t take long for Southern to get on the board with Wyatt Morris cruising in from 24 yards out to get things started.  The next Wellsville possession, Gavin Kountz’s pass was intercepted by Cameron Sloan and was taken back to the house to make the score 14-0.  The next possession, the Indians called on the Big Dog of the Valley winner again, and Morris scampered in from 40 yards away to make it a 22-0 affair.  The final score of the quarter would come from Noah Perfetto from the 4-yard line to put the Indians up 30-0.

The scoring in the second frame started with Wellsville when Gavin Kountz found Charlie Wilson in the back of the endzone for the Tiger’s only score of the night.

Southern would resume their push with Timmy Potts keeping the rock on a QB draw to put the Indians up 38-6.  The next drive for Wellsville, Kountz’ pass was intended for Eddie Stock, and was picked by Aiden Spahlinger and taken back for a score.  On the next offensive drive, Southern would get Colton Soukup involved with a connection from Potts on a 59-yard strike for 6, putting Southern up 51-6 with 3:57 to go in the half.

In the second half on a running clock, Southern would continue to showcase their weapons when Landen Heffner punched one in from 25 yards out, and Brody Brown would finalize the scoring on a 15 yard rush that found paydirt as well.

The Indians finished with 348 yards on the ground, with Wyatt Morris leading the way to 147 yards on 10 attempts with two scores.  Brody Brown toted the rock 9 times for 72 yards and a tuddy.  Landen Heffner had 4 carries for 38 stripes and a score, while Ryan Exline had 4 chances with 37 yards.

For Wellsville, Kasen Ramsey had six touches in the backfield for 25 yards to lead the Tigers.  Eddie Stock had one catch for 19 yards to lead the orange and black in receiving yards.

TIGERS STAY RED HOT

EAST PALESTINE OH- State Ranked Wellsville traveled north to East Palestine looking to put a stranglehold on their lead at the top of the EOAC. The grip tightened as the Tigers overpowered the Bulldogs for their 10th straight win (25-15, 25-14, 25-9).

East Palestine looked up to the challenge early as the Bulldogs started hot building an early 11-6 lead in the 1st set.  The Tigers slammed the door shut on any upset aspirations from that point scoring 13 of the next 14 points on their way to a 1st set victory.  Wellsville left no doubt at the start of the 2nd set as the Tigers raced out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The net presence of Presley Stokes and Alana Amato during the 2nd set proved too much for the Bulldogs to overcome. Stokes would finish the night with 21 kills, 3 blocks, while Amato would tally 10 kills and 2 blocks. The start of the 3rd set saw Wellsville’s Brooke Hackney serve 14 straight as the Tigers would cruise to the 3rd set victory. Hackney added to her performance at the service line with 4 kills and 5 blocks. Bella Poppelriter contributed 20 assists, while Aubri Ramsey solidified the Tiger defense with 20 digs.

The Bulldogs were led by Mia Lee with 7 kills, and 3 blocks, teammate Mackenzie Parker tallied 6 points and 4 assists.

Wellsville (10-1, 8-0)  looks to keep their win streak intact Saturday as they travel to Fort Frye. East Palestine (5-5, 4-4) hits the road on Tuesday as they visit to United.

WELLSVILLE OH- The Tigers had a week that was full of tough tests. After taking care of two EOAC contenders in Southern, and Columbiana, the Tigers had a Saturday matchup with Fort Frye. Wellsville made sure it wasn’t much of a matchup though as they won in sweeping fashion. (25-15 25-14 25-20)
