SCRAPPERS DROP SERIES OPENER TO WEST VIRGINIA

NILES, OH- West Virginia put up 6 runs in the fourth inning to guide the Black Bears to a series opening victory. West Virginia brought the lumber in game one, putting up 15 hits in the ballgame, including 2 home runs in the victory.

During the 6 run fourth inning for West Virginia, Ryan Hernandez hit a solo shot to left to get the Black Bears started. All with 2 outs, the Black Bears had 4 hits and 5 consecutive runs to take a 6-0 lead. The Scrappers came back with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth inning, with an RBI single by Jarficur Parker.

Mahoning Valley scored 2 more runs in both the 5th and 6th inning’s to make it a 7-5 game after 6 innings of play. West Virginia blanked the Scrappers in the last 3 innings to take the series opening victory by a final of 7-5. The winning pitcher for West Virginia was the reigning MLB Draft League pitcher of the week, Jeremy Cook. He tossed 5 innings, while giving up just 4 hits and 7 strikeouts. The Black Bears and the Scrappers play again tonight at 7 P.M.

SCRAPPERS SWEEP BLACK BEARS IN SERIES FINALE

NILES, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers swept the West Virginia Black Bears for the second consecutive weekend with a 10-6 victory on Sunday. The Scrappers got the early lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Sam Beers. The Scrappers hit two long balls in the second inning, on a solo blast by Reed Chumley, followed by a 3 run home-run by Sean Tillmon.

Mahoning Valley had a 6-3 lead after the top of the fifth inning, until Mark Herron Jr. hit an RBI single into right field, followed by 2 more gifted runs on a balk and a passed ball. After the fifth inning, the Scrappers had a controlling lead of 9-3. West Virginia countered with 3 runs in the seventh on a 3 run home run by Kennan Taylor. The Scrappers scored 1 more in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-6. The Scrapers kept that lead and swept the Black Bears for the second time this season.

Mahoning Valley scored 10 runs on 11 hits, while playing clean baseball defensively. The Scrappers improve to 9-1 on the season, and will travel to Frederick on Tuesday for a 3 game series, followed by a 3 game trip to Williamsport. SCRAPPERS USE SIX RUN INNING TO STAY UNBEATEN

NILES OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers picked up the series win over West Virginia by a final of 12-5 on Saturday night.

West Virginia starter Cedric de Grandpré threw a gem through 4 innings for West Virginia. Grandpré fanned 7 batters while only giving up 1 run on 2 hits. West Virginia led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, until the Scarppers exploded offensively, scoring 6 runs on 5 hits to take a 7-4 lead. Mahoning Valley put up another crooked number in the seventh inning, scoring 3 runs on just 1 hit. Black Bears reliever, Brandon Noriega walked 4 batters in the seventh inning, and the Scrappers capitalized on all 4 free passes.

Former Youngstown State pitcher Chad Cole’s came out of the pen to seal the deal, tossing 3 innings, and striking out 3 batters to keep the Scrappers unbeaten at 3-0. Xavier Carter led the squad for Mahoning Valley, going 2-4 at the plate with 3 RBI’s, including the go ahead single in the bottom of the sixth.
