Andrew Todd, Oliver McCully, and Danny Nitolli each contributed 8 points to Poland’s well-rounded performance. BULLDOGS ESCAPE STRUTHERS UPSET ATTEMPT

POLAND OH- In a hard-fought battle on Thursday, Poland faced a determined Struthers team that had upset on their minds. Poland found themselves trailing for most of the 1st quarter, but a pivotal 22-0 run provided the Bulldogs with the cushion they needed. Struthers, however, displayed resilience, cutting the Poland lead down to 4 in the 4th quarter, but ultimately ran out of gas as Poland secured a 51-43 victory.

Poland’s scoring efforts were led by Mary Brant with 14 points, followed by Kate Harrell contributing 13 points, and Leanne Williams and Avery Jakubovic adding 7 and 6 points, respectively.

Struthers showcased their tenacity with Emma Morris scoring 12 points, Gianna Martin contributing 10 points, and Taiya Baraka adding 8 points to the effort.

The first quarter saw the Lady G-Men take an early lead, finishing with a 9-6 advantage over the Wildcats. The second quarter proved evenly matched, with both teams adding 10 points to their tally. As halftime arrived, Garrettsville-Garfield maintained a slim lead at 19-16.

The game’s intensity heightened in the third quarter as Struthers clawed back to take a narrow 27-26 lead heading into the final stretch. The fourth quarter saw both teams battling fiercely, each putting up 6 points. In the end, Struthers held on for the victory with a final score of 33-32.

Emma Morris emerged as the standout for Struthers, earning the Player of the Game honors with a team-high 16 points, including four shots from beyond the arc. Natalie Adams made crucial contributions, scoring 9 points, including the shot that put Struthers ahead for good, and grabbing 3 rebounds. TIGERS WALK IT OFF ON THE FREE THROW LINE

CANFIELD OH- In a captivating matchup at the South Range Holliday Hoops Classic, Massillon Washington and Hilliard Davidson treated fans to a rollercoaster of emotions. After a stunning 20-0 run by Hilliard Davidson in the second quarter, Massillon Washington staged a remarkable comeback, sealing a dramatic 35-34 victory with a walk-off free throw by Telia Russell.

The first half saw Hilliard Davidson dominating, taking a commanding 26-11 lead into halftime, thanks in part to a stellar 20-point second quarter. However, Massillon Washington, undeterred by the deficit, mounted a relentless comeback in the second half.

Key to Massillon’s resurgence was the standout performance by Makyah Edwards, who contributed 11 points. Telia Russell added 10 crucial points, and Hannah Nicola chipped in 7 points. The team’s collective effort culminated in a stunning turnaround and a walk-off free throw for the win.

LIONS FEND OFF THE WILDCATS

COLUMBIANA OH- In a fierce showdown on Wednesday night, Heartland Christian displayed unwavering determination to protect their home court, securing a hard-fought 58-49 victory against visiting Edison.

Leading the charge for Heartland was Rylee Shadowens, who showcased an impressive offensive performance, contributing 19 points to the team’s winning effort. Emily McDowell added significant firepower with 16 points, while Rachel Reynolds chipped in with 10 points.

Edison, eager to challenge the home team, found standout performances from Sophia Henderson, who led all scorers with 18 points. Presley Meadows added 12 points, and Rebecka Evans and Abigail Boka contributed 9 and 8 points, respectively.

The game unfolded as a testament to both teams’ resilience and skill, with each possession hotly contested. Heartland Christian’s ability to maintain composure and execute crucial plays down the stretch ultimately secured the victory.

STRUTHERS EARNS CONVINCING VICTORY

GIRARD, OH – What a night to be a Wild Cat as Struthers took to the hardwood Friday night to take on Girard and walked away with a convincing 58-36 victory. Struthers was led by solid defense and dominant shooting from the majority of the team.

 

It didn’t take long for the Cats to find their groove seeing as they led the Indians 18-9 after the first quarter. Grady Moore found his first 7 points while Lucas Patti connected for 5. For Girard Allen Hess-Cardona led his team in the first with 4 points while Dom Phillips hit a 3-point shot and Ahmad Curd connected for 2 of his own.

 

Things didn’t get much better for Girard in the 2nd where they were outscored 19-6. Struthers had five different players put up points in the quarter including 5 points for both Tommy Cole and Sincere Miller. Girard saw Ahmad Curd put up 4 points including a 3-point beauty and 1 shot out of 2 made from the free throw line. Struthers led 37-15 going into the break.

 

Struthers kept their momentum going after halftime when Cole hit two 3’s to finish out his night with 11 points and Jason Dukes went 1-for-2 from the line and put up a 2 to snag three more points to add to his total of 9 points on the night. Girard had better luck at the free throw line where Stephen Sims and Kaiden Clare both went 2-for-2 at the stripe, Sims would also put up a 2.

 

Girard found a nice scoring streak in the fourth but it came too late. Girard found 13 points in the quarter, by far their best on the night. Cam Herrick went 4-for4 from the line and Sims found 4 more points to finish with 8 on the night. Hess-Cardona would also add 2 more points to his team leading 10 points.

 

Despite a strong fourth for the Indians The Cats defense was simply too much for Girard to get past, combine that with the shooting display Struthers put on and you get the final score of 58-36. Struthers would have two players finish in double digits: Lucas Patti with 10 and Tommy Cole with 11 while Grady Moore and Jason Dukes both capped out at 9. Struthers (4-2) (2-1) are back in action when they host Howland on December 30th at 4:00PM meanwhile Girard hits the road when they visit McDonald as part of a girl-boy doubleheader on December 26th at 7:00PM.
