GIRARD LEADS FROM THE JUMP

In a thrilling conference matchup on Thursday night, Girard emerged victorious on the road, securing a 46-29 win against a resilient Struthers team.

Girard’s dynamic trio of Mia Malito, Mackenzie White, and Ally Gassman led the charge, each contributing significantly to the team’s success. Malito and White showcased their scoring prowess, both tallying 14 points, while Gassman added 10 crucial points to the scoreboard.

Struthers, though facing a tough defeat, saw a standout performance from Katelyn Kimble, who claimed the game-high with an impressive 15 points. Natalie Adams also chipped in with 8 points for the Struthers squad..

HUBBARD FLIES AWAY IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

STRUTHERS OH- Hubbard emerged victorious from a double-overtime thriller on Monday, securing a hard-fought 41-38 win against Struthers.

Claire Murphy led the scoring for Hubbard with 11 points, closely followed by Rheanna Barr contributing 10 points. Khamyah Howell added 8 points, and Phoebe Rusnak chipped in with 7 points, all playing key roles in the team’s success.

On the Struthers side, Ava Croyle led the scoring with 11 points, while Natalie Adams, Katelyn Kimble, and Emma Morris each contributed 5 points.

The win propels Hubbard to a 4-3 record, and they will carry this momentum into their next matchup as they host South Range on Thursday. Struthers, now standing at 1-5, will look to regroup and bounce back as they host Girard on Thursday. The double-overtime thriller adds another exciting chapter to the season for both teams.

 

LADY RAIDERS HUSTLE TO FIRST WIN

CANFIELD, OH- After starting the season with three straight losses, the South Range Lady Raiders knew it would take more effort and energy to accomplish what they wanted this season, and they showed exactly that on Thursday night with at 54-40 victory over Struthers.

In a matchup riddled with fouls and turnovers, South Range was able to find a rhythm in their effort- and it was enough to seal their first victory of the season.

The Lady Raider seniors had a lot to do with it, veteran point guard Devin Sauerwein provided a spark throughout the contest with her speed and ball-handling, but also bucketed 13 to lead the burgundy and gold.  Madi Dado showed poise and determination in her leadership with 9 points and great displays of effort on both sides of the court.  Gwen Lowry showcased her skills to the tune of 12 points, and Sydney Penick had 6.  Other scorers for South Range included Ceci Foster (2) Sophia Lucente (3) and Taylor Dado with 9 points, respectively.

Struthers had a great game plan for South Range, and that was to spread out their scorers, which they did.  Offensively, Katelyn Kimble led the way with 11, and was able to find pockets of scoring from Gianna Mark (8), Emma Morris and Ava Croyle (5), Ava Hall (4), and Taiya Baraka (3).

South Range records their first victory of the season and is now 1-3, while Struthers falls to 1-4 overall.

WILDCATS STAY FOCUSED DOWN THE STRETCH

In a gritty comeback, Struthers showed resilience on the court, rallying in the fourth quarter to secure a 35-29 victory over East. The Wildcats didn’t blink, overcoming a 23-22 deficit after three quarters.

Leading the charge for Struthers was Katelyn Kimble with 11 points, while Taiya Baraka contributed 6 points. Emma Morris and Ava Croyle each added 5 points, showcasing a collective effort in their comeback win.

Looking ahead, Struthers is set for a road challenge on Thursday against South Range, aiming to build on their momentum. Meanwhile, East will hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Chaney in their pursuit of a rebound performance.

STRUTHERS STRINGS TOGETHER AN IMPRESSIVE VICTORY

STRUTHERS OH- In an early season matchup Struthers was able to showcase their defensive intensity. Hold Liberty to only 42 points and secured a 62-42 victory.

 

Jondel Estrada was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 13 points. For Liberty Evan Bates had a productive offensive night scoring 25 points and Luke Bates was able to get into double digits with 10 points.

 

Struthers improves to 2-0 on the season and will take on Canton Central Catholic this Tuesday, December 12th at home hoping to continue their successful start to the season. Liberty’s next game is Friday, December 15th against Crestview as they look to bounce back.

SPARTANS STAY PERFECT AT HOME

Conneaut, OH- Hoping to continue their forward momentum, the Conneaut Spartans showcased their prowess on the court, securing a commanding victory against the Northwestern Wildcats. The final scoreboard told the tale of a well-fought battle, with the Spartans emerging victorious with a final score of 70-55.

Quarter Breakdown

The game kicked off with a competitive first quarter, with Conneaut putting up 11 points against Northwestern’s 14. The intensity only escalated from there, with the Spartans taking control and outscoring their opponents in each subsequent quarter. The second quarter saw 16 points for Conneaut compared to Northwestern’s 13. The trend continued in the third quarter, where Conneaut put up an impressive 21 points to Northwestern’s 14. The final quarter solidified the Spartans’ dominance, closing out the game with 22 points to Northwestern’s 14.

Player Standouts

Chance Loomis led the charge for the Spartans, contributing a whopping 24 points to the team’s total. Jordan Kulko showcased his skills with 15 points, while JR Hutchinson added 11. Other notable contributors included Davonte Harris and Noah Hamm, each chipping in 8 points, and Aiden Goudge and Cole Stump rounding out the scoring.

On the Northwestern side, Jack Miller led their scoring efforts with an impressive 16 points. Jake Raelman also made a significant impact, contributing 15 points to the Wildcats’ total.

Looking Ahead

With this win, the Conneaut Spartans maintain an undefeated record at 2-0. Their next challenge awaits them at home against the St. John Heralds on December 9, 2023. The Heralds, coming off a heartbreaking 62-61 loss against the Windham Bombers, will be eager to bounce back. The Spartans will need to bring their A-game to secure another victory.

As for the Northwestern Wildcats, they find themselves at 0-2 and will face the General McLane Lancers in their upcoming game. The Lancers, despite a recent 72-65 loss to the Girard Yellow Jackets, will be formidable opponents. The Wildcats will look to turn their season around and secure their first win.

WILDCATS DOMINATE FINAL FRAME

STRUTHERS OH- Struthers exhibited their strength, powering past Western Reserve on Tuesday night with a convincing 60-40 victory. The Wildcats asserted control in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 16-4 and solidifying the win in what had been a closely contested game through the first three quarters.

Leading the scoring charge for Struthers was Lucas Patti, contributing 17 points, followed by Crady Moore with 10 points. Jason Dukes and Andrew Kopnicky each added 8 points to the Wildcats’ winning effort.

Western Reserve saw notable performances from Dom Ricciardi, who tallied 13 points, and Josh Klasic, who contributed 9 points in the matchup.

FITCH SURVIVES FOURTH QUARTER SCARE

AUSTINTOWN OH- In the first full week of games for girls basketball, The Austintown-Fitch Falcons hosted The Struthers Wildcats for a non-conference contest Wednesday night. The game opened up as a close contest after a quarter, with Struthers’ Emma Morris knocking down a pair of triples in the opening frame. Meanwhile, five different Falcons scored in the first eight minutes to hold an 11-10 lead after a quarter. Fitch would keep that same tempo into the second quarter, this time seven different Falcons scored a bucket, out-scoring Struthers 16-7 in the second and held a commanding 27-17 lead at halftime!

Out of the half, Fitch looked like they were set to put the game away early, once again winning a quarter over The Wildcats, this time 17-10 in the third to hold a 44-27 lead heading into the final quarter of regulation. Then, the fourth quarter became The Katelyn Kimble show when she scored 13 of her 15 points in the final quarter! Struthers would manage a comeback and battle within a bucket of Austintown. However, despite being out-scored 19-6 by Struthers in the fourth, Fitch would hold on with a clutch late-game rebound by Ayla Ray to clinch the 50-46 win over The Wildcats.

Katelyn Kimble would lead Struthers and the entire game in points with 15 on the night. Emma Morris was right behind her with 10 points on the night, while Ava Croyle scored 9 points to round out the Struthers big three in scoring. Austintown was highlighted with six girls scoring 7 or more points in the evening! Leading the way was Destanie McCullough with 9 points, followed by four Falcons scoring 8 points in Dasiyia Donlow, Sam Severn, Lannie Henning and Rachel Spalding. Rounding things out was Ayla Ray who finished with 7 points. With so many names putting up similar-like scoring numbers, our players of the game went to both Ayla Ray and Dasiyia Donlow for, not only their ability to score, but the rebounds they were able to secure to help lead their team to victory! Fitch (2-1) will now look ahead to Saturday, December 2nd when they host Hathaway Brown (1-0) set for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off. Meanwhile, Struthers (0-2) will look to get on the winning side when they hit the road to battle Western Reserve (0-2) on Monday, December 4th with a 6:15 p.m. tip-off. CANFIELD SHOWS NO SIGNS OF BEING DOWN

STRUTHERS OH- Continuing their strong form from the previous season, where they reached the Regional Final, Canfield showcased their prowess in the first game of the year with a dominant 65-16 victory over Struthers.

The initial quarter was closely contested, with Canfield holding a narrow 11-10 lead. However, the Cardinals shifted into high gear, outscoring Struthers 18-2 in the second quarter and 19-1 in the third, establishing an insurmountable lead.

Cami Hritz led the charge for Canfield, contributing an impressive 19 points. Jenna Triveri and Carly Fleming each added 8 points to the team’s commanding total.

Struthers’ Katelyn Kimble stood out amidst the tough competition, scoring 12 points in a commendable effort.

As Canfield celebrates their decisive season opener, the team looks poised for another strong campaign. Struthers, despite the challenging start, will regroup and aim to bounce back in the upcoming games. The Cardinals have set the tone for an exciting basketball season with their emphatic performance.

STRUTHERS GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JOHN HRITZ

STRUTHERS OH- The historic Struthers Fieldhouse is ready for another basketball season and so are The Struthers Wildcats! Taking over the reins on the girls side this year will be the legendary John Hritz. 14-9 a season ago, the Struthers girls basketball team came into this year having lost four seniors, all of which contributed minutes. Leaving The Wildcats young, hungry and unique in the unknown this season.

In this edition of Coaches Corner, YSNs Ty Bartell gets the chance to chat with the new skipper at Struthers, John Hritz. They cover topics including his decision to come to Struthers, what Wildcats fans can expect out of the season and so much more!
