MICKEY’S MANTEL IS LOADED WITH ACHIEVEMENTS

STRUTHERS OH- Being a student athlete immediately presents time constraints, ensuring you achieve in both the classroom and the court or field. Then there are the few student athletes that mix working a part-time job in their schedule. But how many work volunteer hours as a firefighter on top of all that? That is exactly the case for Struthers senior setter Mickey Taaffe!

Leading her team in assists with 184 on the season at the time of this article, Taaffe goes beyond hard work on the court. A standout student in the classroom, she also finds time to work part time at a local Italian restaurant and volunteer as a firefighter!

Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell from Your Sports  Network (YSN) interviewed the Wildcat senior about her volleyball career, busy schedule, and future goals. As YSN brings you this edition of Player Profile with Struthers senior, Mickey Taaffe!

CATS STAY COOL ON SENIOR NIGHT

STRUTHERS OH- As the volleyball season begins to wind down, senior nights are beginning to take place all around the valley and beyond. As it’s both a passing of the torch to the young classmates and a gear up for tournament time! Quite a few senior night celebrations were taking place on Tuesday, October 3rd, including The Struthers Wildcats. Hosting in a fellow Northeast 8 (NE8) conference opponent, The Niles-McKinley Red Dragons. Winning two prior matchups with Niles this season, The Wildcats were undefeated in sets at a 5-0 record against The Red Dragons this year.

The first set saw Struhers get a key rally with Scarlet Horvath behind the service line! The Wildcats would gain a double-digit point advantage and never look back, claiming the opening set by a score of 25-8. A score that was so nice, Struthers did it twice! Picking up the set two win with the same score of 25-8, as The Wildcats had plenty aces up their sleeves from behind the service line! The Red Dragons put up the most fight in the third set, exchanging scores from the early to middle portions of the set with Struthers. However, The Wildcats clinched the match with a runaway 25-11 set victory to claim the match in straight sets!

Struthers (7-12)(5-7) will stay in conference action with another home matchup, this time hosting in The South Range Raiders (10-8)(6-5) on Thursday, October 5th. On the other hand, Niles (1-16)(0-12) will go out of conference when they hit the road to battle a different group of Raiders when they do battle with The Warren G. Harding Raiders (3-11) on Wednesday, October 4th. Interviews with Players of the Match Genevieve Wulzen and Mickey Taaffe, as well as Coach Bob Calvin can be found below! WILDCATS CONTINUE TO RUN WILD

CORTLAND OH- In a showcase of sheer dominance, the Struthers football team continued their impressive form with a resounding 40-6 victory over Lakeview. From the opening whistle, Struthers exhibited their relentless prowess on the field, leaving no doubt about their supremacy.

The 1st quarter set the tone for Struthers as Jason Dukes powered his way through with a 12-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful PAT, putting them ahead 7-0. Struthers continued to flex their offensive muscles when AC Carter exploded with a spectacular 73-yard touchdown run, complemented by another successful PAT, extending their lead to 14-0.

The 2nd quarter saw no letup from Struthers as AC Carter showcased his speed once again, sprinting for a 47-yard touchdown run, although the PAT was missed, making it 20-0 Struthers.

As the 3rd quarter unfolded, Struthers maintained their offensive momentum. Devin Braham added to the scoreboard with a 27-yard run, and a successful 2-point conversion extended their lead to 28-0.

The 4th quarter saw Struthers continuing their dominance, with Na’Jier Howard’s 2-yard touchdown run, although the PAT was missed, making it 34-0 Struthers. Lakeview managed to find the end zone with a 60-yard run by Hayden Bartram, but the PAT was unsuccessful, setting the score at Struthers 34, Lakeview 6.

Struthers had the last word, as Anthony Pastella capped off the impressive performance with a 19-yard touchdown run, sealing the victory at Struthers 40, Lakeview 6.

In the end, Struthers showcased their relentless offensive power, leaving Lakeview no room to counter. The final score of 40-6 reflected Struthers’ dominance on the field, as they cruised to another convincing win, making them look unstoppable once again.

POTTERS TAKE LAST SECOND VICTORY

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In a heart-pounding football clash, East Liverpool emerged victorious with a thrilling 17-14 win over Edison, sealed by a dramatic walk-off field goal. The game unfolded with intense action in each quarter.

In the 1st quarter, Edison’s Talon McClurg powered through for a 2-yard touchdown run, taking an early 7-0 lead. The 2nd quarter saw East Liverpool’s Gavin Wright connecting with Dorian Burchett on a spectacular 53-yard touchdown pass, leveling the score at 7-7.

In the 3rd quarter, Edison’s Talon McClurg struck again with a 4-yard TD run, giving his team a 14-7 advantage. However, East Liverpool answered back as Gavin Wright unleashed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Conrad, tying the game at 14-14 in the 3rd quarter.

The decisive moment arrived in the 4th quarter when Kamdin Miller of East Liverpool calmly slotted a 26-yard field goal with just 2.4 seconds remaining, sealing the victory with a final score of Potters 17, Edison 14. It was a game filled with excitement and suspense that will be remembered by fans for years to come.

RISING FROM THE ASHES

In the world of high school volleyball, certain names stand out as game-changers, and Alexandra Ash of the Edison Wildcats is undoubtedly one of them. With her remarkable talent, leadership, and dedication, Ash has left an indelible mark on the team and the sport during her career as a Wildcat.

Alexandra Ash’s name is synonymous with power on the volleyball court. Throughout her time at Edison, she has earned a reputation as one of the most feared hitters in the conference, and it’s easy to see why. Her secret weapon? Tremendous arm speed that allows her to unleash attacks with unmatched velocity. Ash’s hits are not just powerful; they are thunderous. Standing tall, she possesses a height advantage that adds another layer of complexity for opposing teams. Few high school teams can claim to have an easy time defending against her imposing size and agility.

Leadership is a quality that sets exceptional athletes apart, and Alexandra Ash embodies this trait as the captain of the Wildcats. Her leadership style is built on connection and bringing out the best in her teammates. Ash’s ability to foster a strong sense of camaraderie within the team has undoubtedly contributed to the Wildcats’ success on the court.

Ash’s impact is not limited to leadership alone; her statistics speak volumes about her performance. With 97 kills to her name this season, she holds the team lead and continues to be a reliable offensive force. Her impressive hitting percentage of over .200 showcases her consistency and ability to deliver when it matters most. Ash is also a defensive powerhouse, ranking second on the team in blocks with 10 for the season. Her all-around contribution extends to the service line, where she has served up 17 aces and amassed 63 service points.

As Alexandra’s high school career with the Edison Wildcats draws to a close, a new chapter awaits her. She will carry her academic and volleyball talents to Washington and Jefferson, where her future in both realms appears exceptionally bright. Her journey in volleyball is far from over, and her impact on the sport and her teams is sure to continue at the collegiate level.

In the Edison volleyball program, Ash has left an indelible legacy of power, leadership, and excellence. Her ability to inspire and elevate those around her is a testament to her character and dedication. As she looks toward the next stage of her academic and athletic journey, one thing is certain: Alexandra Ash will continue to shine brightly, both on and off the court.

RED DEVILS TAKE CARE OF CLASSIC RIVAL

Campbell High School rekindled an old-school rivalry on the volleyball court and emerged victorious over Struthers in a thrilling four-set match. The final scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-18, and 26-24, showcasing the intensity of the competition.

Both teams displayed their skills and determination throughout the match, making it an exciting contest for the fans. Campbell’s Angeliz Diaz and Elysia Rudolphi each contributed two aces, while the team’s offensive prowess was highlighted by Kendall Brunn’s 11 kills, Cyra Cross’s 10 kills, and Angeliz Diaz’s 7 kills.

MiLeena Williams led the blocking efforts with 6 blocks, followed by Kendall Brunn with 4 blocks and Carla Ramirez Ortiz with 3 blocks. Defensively, the team showcased their digging skills with Angeliz Diaz leading the way with 22 digs, closely followed by Cyra Cross with 20, Carla Ramirez Ortiz with 18, and Abigail Broz with 10.

Carla Ramirez Ortiz orchestrated the team’s plays effectively, providing 28 assists to her teammates, which played a crucial role in securing the victory for Campbell.

WILDCATS LET OUT FRUSTRATION ON HUBBARD

STRUTHERS OH- Struthers came into their Friday night matchup against Hubbard with a burning desire to erase the memory of last week’s tough loss. Their determination and resolve were on full display as they secured an emphatic 41-14 victory over their opponents.

The first quarter opened with a bang for Struthers as Devin Braham sprinted down the field for an electrifying 72-yard run, crossing the goal line at the 11:17 mark. This explosive play set the tone for the Wildcats, who took an early 7-0 lead.

Struthers continued their offensive assault in the opening quarter when Najier Howard bulldozed his way into the end zone with a 4-yard run at 5:35, extending their lead to 14-0.

Hubbard, refusing to be left behind, responded with determination. Garland Warren punched in a 2-yard run with just 1:01 remaining in the quarter, putting Hubbard on the scoreboard at 14-7.

However, Struthers wasted no time in regaining their dominance. In the closing moments of the first quarter, Jason Dukes broke free for an explosive 68-yard run, widening the gap to 20-7, although they missed the subsequent PAT.

The second quarter saw no let-up from Struthers. Dukes continued to shine, connecting with Kendis McLeod on a 52-yard touchdown pass at 11:06, pushing the lead to 27-7.

AC Carter joined the scoring frenzy with a 4-yard touchdown run for Struthers, even though they missed the PAT, extending their lead to 33-7.

The third quarter continued to be a showcase for Struthers’ offensive prowess. AC Carter found the end zone once more, this time with a 6-yard touchdown run, and the Wildcats converted the 2-point attempt, amassing a commanding 41-7 lead.

Hubbard rallied in the fourth quarter, with Alex Hackwelder executing a 1-yard touchdown run through a quarterback keeper, making it 41-14.

The Struthers Wildcats, determined to bounce back from adversity, delivered a remarkable performance that included explosive runs, pinpoint passes, and tenacious defense. Their 41-14 victory over Hubbard was a statement win, demonstrating their resilience and strength as a team.

BULLDOGS STILL COMFORTABLE IN FIRST PLACE

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview’s volleyball team continued their impressive undefeated streak in Northeast 8 (NE8) play with a dominant sweep of Struthers, underlining their skill and determination on the court. The final scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 25-19 reflected Lakeview’s ability to control the match and secure a convincing win.

Key players for Lakeview delivered standout performances, contributing significantly to their team’s success. Mallory Mailach led the way with an exceptional display of service points, recording 18, and contributing 7 aces. Her consistent serves created challenges for Struthers and set the tone for Lakeview’s performance.

Reagan Price emerged as a dominant force at the net, notching 19 kills, showcasing her scoring prowess. Molly Stuart added 11 kills, further bolstering Lakeview’s offensive capabilities. Mallory Mailach’s role as a playmaker was evident with 38 assists, emphasizing her ability to set up her teammates effectively.

In the blocking department, Reagan Price recorded 3 blocks, while Ali Parise contributed 1, demonstrating Lakeview’s presence at the net. Addy Allen was a standout defensively with 17 digs, ensuring that Struthers had difficulty finding openings on the court.

This sweep further solidifies Lakeview’s position in NE8 play, as they continue to showcase their cohesion as a team and their ability to control matches. Their consistency, teamwork, and execution were key factors in securing the victory.

INDIANS HANG ON TO SECURE SWEEP OF STRUTHERS

GIRARD OH- In an intense conference matchup, Girard demonstrated their dominance on the volleyball court as they secured a sweeping victory over Struthers, despite the Wildcats putting up a spirited fight in the final set. The final scores of 25-9, 25-16, and 25-23 showcased Girard’s commanding performance and their ability to maintain their composure in a closely contested third set.

Girard’s offensive powerhouse was led by Bree Latell, who delivered a standout performance with an impressive 18 kills, providing a consistent source of scoring for her team. Nico Cochran also contributed significantly with 10 kills, reinforcing Girard’s attacking prowess. Bailey Walters orchestrated the team’s offense with precision, tallying an impressive 32 assists, highlighting her role as a key playmaker for the team.

The serving game was a crucial element of Girard’s success, with Alexis Pieton leading the way with 16 service points, providing a solid foundation for her team’s performance. Nico Cochran and Bree Latell each added 13 and 2 service points, respectively, while also contributing aces along with Alexis Pieton. Their ability to apply pressure from the service line was a key factor in the match.

Defensively, Bree Latell showcased her skills with 14 digs, anchoring Girard’s backcourt. Kyra Bell also contributed with 4 digs, ensuring that the team’s defense remained steadfast. At the net, Brooke Perry displayed her blocking prowess with 5 blocks, while Bailey Walters added 3 blocks, further solidifying Girard’s defensive efforts.

While Struthers put up a valiant fight in the final set, Girard’s cohesion and talent ultimately secured the victory. This match exemplified Girard’s ability to excel in all facets of the game, from their potent offense to their tenacious defense. As they continue their conference campaign, Girard will look to build on this impressive performance and maintain their momentum in the world of high school volleyball.

WESTERN RESERVE CAGES THE WILDCATS

BERLIN CENTER OH- Monday night on Your Sports Network was a night that showcased the volleyball and soccer talent from around the area. With four matchups occurring in both sports, including the volleyball match out in Berlin Center between, the home team, The Western-Reserve Blue Devils and The Struthers Wildcats. Coming from different conferences, The Blue Devils out of The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) and The Wildcats out of The Northeast 8 (NE8), the matchup served as a non-conference test before both teams resumed conference action on Tuesday.

Both teams were hungry for an opening set victory and showed it with their play to start! As the exchanging of points happened at a rapid rate and in a blink of an eye it was tied up 11-11 between the two teams in set one. However, The Blue Devils focused up and got efficient with their swings. Managing a 14-1 run to end the set, Western-Reserve would capture the opening set win 25-12. Taking the momentum that ended the set previous and carrying it into the next one, The Blue Devils were not messing around. Coming out with a fury and capitalizing on Struthers mistakes while doing work behind the service line saw Reserve capture a convincing 25-9 set two win and take a commanding 2-0 set lead.

The third set was the most competitive, with The Wildcats at one point grabbing a 12-7 lead with Mickey Taaffe leading the way behind the service line for Struthers. But once again, despite the battle of The Wildcats, The Blue Devils just had a little more in the tank. Managing the deficit and working themselves back in front as the third set came down to the wire. It would be Western-Reserve that would get the better of Struthers 25-21 in and fun and competitive concluding set three.

Angelina Cappabianca had an impressive statline for The Blue Devils, recording 10 kills, 7 blocks and an ace on the evening. Lisa Eichert led the way in kills (15) while also getting the double-double with digs (11), Eichert also pitched in elsewhere with 2 aces and a block. The two setters were equally as good on Monday as Haylee Fellows and Quincy Miller each had 14 assists to lead the team. While Ally Jones was the defensive anchor once again with her team-leading 18 digs on the night.

The straight-set sweep for Western Reserve (10-1) puts them back into conference action as they hit the road Tuesday, September 19th to do battle with The Waterloo Vikings (5-5). Struthers (5-8) will also be in conference action, as they look to bounce back against a very tough Girard (9-2) also on Tuesday.
