LADY WARRIORS PROTECT THE HOME COURT

East Ashtabula, Ohio- In a commanding performance, the Edgewood Warriors girls basketball team showcased their prowess on the basketball court as they secured a convincing victory against the West Geauga Wolverines. The game unfolded with an even first quarter, as both teams traded baskets to end the period with a tied score of 15 each. However, Edgewood quickly gained momentum in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents by one point and establishing a narrow lead.

The third quarter proved to be a turning point, with the Edgewood Girls intensifying their offensive efforts and putting up an impressive 20 points. Katelynn McCollister led the charge, contributing significantly to the team’s overall score with an outstanding 26 points. Leigha Guyton and McKenna Vencil also played crucial roles, securing 10 points each. The Warriors dominated the court, creating a substantial lead that West Geauga struggled to overcome.

The final quarter saw Edgewood maintaining their strong performance, adding 13 more points to their total. Meanwhile, the Wolverines faced challenges, managing only 6 points in the quarter. The game concluded with a decisive victory for the Edgewood Warriors, with a final score of 59-40.

Looking ahead, the Warriors, now boasting a 2-0 record, will face the Harvey Red Raiders in their next matchup on December 5, 2023. The Red Raiders, with a 1-1 record, aim to rebound from their recent loss to the Willoughby South Rebels. On the other hand, the West Geauga Wolverines (1-2) will take on the Chagrin Falls Tigers (0-3) on the same date. The Tigers, having suffered a close loss to the Chardon Hilltoppers, seek their first victory of the season.

DRAGONS STRUGGLE AT HOME VS WOLVERINES

Ashtabula, OH- In a hard-fought battle at Lakeside Stadium, the Lakeside Dragons faced off against the West Geauga Wolverines in an exciting Friday night showdown. From the very start, it was evident that both teams were determined to give their all on the gridiron.

The first quarter saw West Geauga’s Nassir Levy making an impressive 9-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful extra point, putting the Wolverines ahead 7-0. As the clock ticked down, Finn Keenan extended the Wolverines’ lead with a 3-yard touchdown run, securing another extra point for a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Nassir Levy continued to dominate, scoring a 1-yard touchdown run with yet another successful extra point, pushing the lead to 21-0 for West Geauga. The Lakeside Dragons were struggling to find their footing, but the Wolverines’ defense remained relentless.

The third quarter saw Nassir Levy finding the end zone once more, this time with an 8-yard touchdown run, and the extra point was good, extending West Geauga’s lead to a commanding 28-0.

However, the Lakeside Dragons refused to back down. In the fourth quarter, Nate Bartone broke through West Geauga’s defense with a 13-yard touchdown run. Although the 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, Lakeside finally got on the board, trailing 28-6.

The Dragons continued their resurgence with Alex DiSalvatore scoring a 5-yard touchdown run, but once again, the 2-point conversion fell short, making the score 28-12 in favor of West Geauga.

In the waning minutes of the game, Nassir Levy sealed the victory for the Wolverines with a 4-yard touchdown run, securing the extra point and bringing the final score to 35-12 in favor of West Geauga.

Despite the loss, the Lakeside Dragons showed resilience and determination, and they will look to bounce back as they face the Madison Blue Streaks in their upcoming CVC Lake Division matchup in week 6. Meanwhile, the West Geauga Wolverines will hit the road to take on the Hawken Hawks in their CVC Chagrin Division opener, hoping to build on their hard-earned victory.

POLAND SNATCHES VICTORY OOUT FROM UNDER WOLVERINES

POLAND OH- Everyone knee the district semifinal between West Geauga and Poland was going to be a close game. The eleventh seeded Wolverines went 22-4 a season ago, and were a regional team. They returned most of their roster, and the only reason the were seeded so low was the fact they hadn’t played many games at the time of voting. Poland was able to pull out a dramatic overtime win 78-67.

The Bulldogs came out swinging staring the game on a 9-0 run. The Bulldogs first five shots from the field were three pointers. Poland jumped out a 35-19 lead as the second half ticked away. The Wolverines put together a 10-0 run between the 2nd and 3rd quarters to get back in it though and cut the Poland lead to 35-29.

Throughout the rest of the game, every time Poland would appear to sneak away, West Geauga would find a big shot to keep the Bulldogs in striking distance. This paid off for them as in the fourth quarter they finally got their first lead of the game going up 62-61.

After a pair of free throws, the Wolverines made it 64-61. Poland then turned the ball over back to West Geauga and with 6.7 seconds to go in the game the Wolverines were in bounding the ball in front of their own bench. Mary Brant put on a cape for her team as she poked away the inbound pass, gathered it, and got a three up just in time to beat the buzzer. The shot went in and Poland snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Poland took that momentum into overtime and outscored West Geauga 14-3 in the extra frame. They would win 78-67.

Polsnd advances to their third straight district championship where they’ll host Marlington on Saturday at 7:00.

NO STOPPING THE COWBOYS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Facing just their second opponent with a losing record this season, the Chaney Cowboys (9-6)poured it on the visiting West Geauga Wolverines (0-10) in their first-round matchup, winning big 83-45.

It was going to be a tall task for the visiting Wolverines to try and pick up their first win of the season. By the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines were able to hold Chaney to just 14 points and trailed by only 7.

The Cowboys slow start would not last long however, as 6 different players would put points up in their 21-point second quarter, giving them a 41-20 lead going into the half.

With the lead firmly in hand and expanding throughout the third quarter, the question for the Cowboys became, how long will they continue to pour it on. Coach McGaughy let his players cook, keeping them prepared for another district title run.

Three different Cowboys totaled double digit points on the night, two of them coming off the bench. All but one of the Chaney Cowboys who played in last nights routing of West Geauga put points on the board.

UP NEXT:

ChaneyOpting to play in the first round rather than take a bye, the Chaney Cowboys will advance to take on the Edgewood Warriors (4-9). While Edgewood was on a bye and did not have a playoff game this Tuesday, they were in action against Harvey, a game they lost 59-53.
