THOMPSON TAKES MVP AT POLAND INVITE

POLAND, OH-Boardman senior Cameron Thompson earned The 2022 Iron Bulldog and The 2022 Running Events MVP at the 26th Annual Poland Invitational this past Saturday. Thompson placed first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was a part of the first-place 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams along with seniors Ben Alvarico and Trey DePietro and junior Logan Thompson. Both Spartan Sprint Relays set new Poland Invitational Records and the 4×200 set a new BHS School Record.

“Cam, and our entire sprint crew, ran with a fire and determination I have not seen in a long time,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “Our sprint coach, Rick Sypert, did an outstanding job preparing them and they made a statement on Saturday for sure.”

The Spartans won the meet with 92 points, finishing ahead of second-place Fitch at 77 and third place Chardon with 64.

On the track, the boys 4×800 relay team of sophomore Brock Farris, freshman David D’Altorio, senior Declan Klein, and junior Andrew Yocum placed seventh. Senior Trey DePietro was second and junior Brady DePietro seventh overall in the 110 hurdles. Senior Ben Alvarico was second behind only Thompson in the 100-meter dash. D’Altorio placed sixth overall in the 1600-meter run. Junior Joel Cuevas-Pixley finished fourth overall in the 400-meter dash. Junior Logan Thompson and Trey DePietro finished second and third overall in the 300-meter hurdles. Farris was fifth overall in the 800-meter run. Finally, on the track, the 4×400 relay team of Cuevas-Pixley, Farris, Brady DePietro, and Klein finished eighth overall. In the field, senior Joe Sferra placed fifth in the shot put and junior Tyler Cherne was eighth in the discus.

Next up for the Spartans will be the Euclid Relays on Friday, May 6th.
