TIGERS TOAST TORONTO TO BEGIN SEASON

TORONTO, OH- The Wellsville football team ended the 2018 season with a disappointing 36-0 loss at rival Toronto. On that rainy night, Red Knights quarterback and Ohio State baseball recruit Nathan Karaffa set several school passing records. In a rarely seen twist of fate, the Tigers opened their 2019 season at the same place it ended the year before, but this time with much different results. In a game filled with cramps, penalties, and highlight-reel plays, the Tigers avenged their loss from 2018 with a 26-15 win at Bud Bucher Field.

The Tigers were led on offense by senior running back/fullback combo Justin Wright and Justin Sarge. Wright led both teams in rushing with eight carried for 132 yards and a touchdown, while Sarge chipped in nine carries for 106 yards and a touchdown of his own. The duo each had long runs to paydirt. Wright ran 93 yards for a score in the first quarter, while Sarge had a 58-yard scamper in the third quarter. Wright is the defending OHSAA Division III 100 meter dash state champion.

Seniors Jason Tice and Darien Suggs also scored for the Tigers. Tice’s score came in the third quarter on a five-yard scamper, while Suggs picked up right where he left off in 2018 with a highlight reel pick-six. Jojo Savage and Garrett Dozier led the Red Knights on the ground with 78 and 72 yards respectively, while sophomore QB Aiden Mick threw for 100 yards and a touchdown to go with four interceptions.

The Tigers are back in action on September 6th in a home game against Edison. This will be  Wellsville’s first home game on their new turf field at Nicholson stadium.
