TIGERS WAVE BY INTO THE NEXT ROUND

By Michael Wolfgang

NEW MIDDLETOWN, OHIO – Getting out in front early and making your presence felt is exactly what Springfield did to make sure they advanced with a nice looking 9-1 final score over Newton Falls.

Jacey Mullen had a sparkling performance for the Tigers. Mullen went four-for-four with a single in the bottom of the first inning, a home run in the third, a single in the fourth and another single in the sixth. Mullen led her team in hits as her teammate Emily Gerthung was the next closest with three hits as Rachel Malatol and Sami McKim each had two hits.

The winning arm in the pitcher’s circle was Haleigh McCalla, pitching the distance in a spectacular outing as she brought her best stuff and then some with her to the ball field. McCalla allowed just one earned run on two hits, one base on balls, and an unbelievable 18 strikeouts of Newton Falls batters. Nine runs on 15 hits, one error, and a complete dominant pitching performance added up to a Springfield eight run victory.

Springfield advances to the district semifinals where they’ll matchup with Mathews on Monday at Jackson Milton. First pitch is slated for 4:00.
