THINGS ARE ABOUT TO PICK UP!

CANFIELD, OH- South Range High School senior Shaun Updegraff, known affectionately as “The Heartbreak Kid, Shaun Michael” is more than just a standout athlete; he’s a cornerstone of the community and a source of inspiration for his teammates. In a recent interview on the YSN podcast, Updegraff shared insights into what motivates him both on the football field and beyond.

Taking up the honor of carrying the flag at the beginning of each contest, Updegraff described it as a significant responsibility that deeply connects him to his team’s legacy. “Chris was always one of those guys that was just there for me and taught me the ropes of everything,” he noted, giving credit to his predecessor, Chris Colucci.

A natural leader, Shaun has earned accolades for his motivational skills and dance moves. He credits former players for encouraging him to embrace this role. Whether it’s leading pre-game dances or giving heartfelt pep talks, Updegraf is always ready to inspire his teammates.

When it comes to sports, Updegraff isn’t just a football star. He’s equally passionate about baseball. Planning to pursue a sports management degree in college while continuing his baseball career, Updegraff hopes to combine his love for sports and education. “I started really young in kindergarten, and ever since, I fell in love with it,” he said of his baseball journey.

Shaun attributes his unwavering work ethic to his father and the supportive culture of the South Range community. “I play for those guys next to me. I play for my family sitting right in front of us. It means the world,” he emphasized.

Besides sports, family tradition plays a significant role in Shaun’s life. Fondly recalling childhood Halloween costumes like a firefighter, Updegraff’s eyes light up with the same enthusiasm he brings to the field.

In an era where young athletes often face immense pressure, Shaun Updegraff stands out not just for his athletic prowess but for his humility, gratitude, and dedication to his community. As graduation approaches, there’s no doubt that Shaun will continue to be a leader and inspiration, wherever his journey takes him.
