CANFIELD REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

BOARDMAN, OH – While it may feel like spring outside, Canfield reminded us we’re still in February when they hosted Cleveland Heights in the final game of the hockey regular season. With the excitement of senior day and the great memory of the 8-0 victory the cardinals found against these Tigers on December 10th, this team was ready to play and with another 8-0 victory on Sunday afternoon, it’s safe to say they absolutely were ready for this one.

 

It didn’t take long for Canfield to get on the board because less than 2 minutes into the game Christian Morrison got one past Tigers net minder James Betti. Just under 3 minutes later CJ Glista passed the puck to Scotty Tucker who tucked one home to help the Cardinals extend their lead. With under 5 minutes to go Canfield would find yet another tally, this time off of a tip from Charlie Boris who took the feed from JJ Boris. Peyton Nottingham never faced a shot in the first frame while Betti faced 23 and stopped 20 of them. 

 

Cleveland Heights stepped up their defensive play in period 2 and held Canfield to just 14 shots and James Betti stopped all of them. Canfield allowed just one shot from Cleveland Heights late in the period on a small breakaway that Nottingham showed absolutely no fear on when batting it aside. These two teams started to look a little more even in this period, though Canfield still maintained possession for the majority of it, Cleveland Heights did start to look more comfortable.

 

While the Tigers should be happy with their 2nd period, they should forget completely about the third where Canfield put up 5 goals off of 13 shots. Not even a minute into the period Ty Novotny put one past Betti with an assist from Owen Olovsky at  the 12:08 mark it would be Gavin Rupert’s turn to cash in with the helper from Charlie Boris. Grayson Orlovsky found the next one up high for a beautiful score with no assist needed. The next two came later and a minute apart from each other both from Owen Orlovsky with the first having Grayson Orlovsky credited with the assist and the second going unassisted.

 

Despite how this season went the Cardinals did find some very impressive wins including the series sweep of Cleveland Heights where they outscored the Tigers 16-0! Owen Orlovsky showed everyone his skill with a 4 point night with his 2 goals and 2 assists while Grayson Orlovsky and Charlie Boris both finished with 2 points. Cleveland Heights will finish off their season when they visit Notre Dame Cathedral Latin on February 10th at 6:15PM while Canfield gears up for their first Baron Cup playoff game against Chagrin Falls, that game’s date and time are still being determined. 

CANFIELD KICKS EAGLES OUT OF THEIR NEST

CANFIELD OH- In a highly anticipated showdown on their home court, Canfield faced the formidable challenge of Warren JFK on Tuesday night. The Cardinals rose to the occasion, flexing their muscles to secure a decisive 65-53 victory and maintain control throughout the contest.

Leading the charge for Canfield was Dom Cruz, whose remarkable performance yielded an impressive 29 points. Ben Weaver contributed 13 points, while Sam Castronova added 10 points, and Tony Russo chipped in with 9 points. The Cardinals’ well-rounded offensive effort proved pivotal in keeping Warren JFK at bay.

Despite the efforts of Warren JFK, led by Nick Ryan’s standout 23-point performance, and contributions from Jaden Rishel and Nico Ciminero with 10 points each, Canfield’s resilience and skill on the court proved insurmountable.

With this crucial win, Canfield (12-4) is set to take their show on the road, facing Warren Harding on Friday. Meanwhile, Warren JFK (12-4) will regroup and return home to face Aquinas in their upcoming matchup on Friday.

CANFIELD SHOWS THEY CAN STILL DOMINATE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a display of formidable firepower, Canfield asserted their dominance on Monday with a commanding 50-28 victory on the road against Ursuline. The Canfield squad showcased their prowess, leaving no doubt about their offensive capabilities.

Leading the charge for Canfield was Cami Hritz, who lit up the scoreboard with an impressive 18 points, complemented by Camie Dill’s solid 14-point contribution. Carly Fleming added 5 points to round out the team’s well-balanced offensive performance.

Ursuline, facing a relentless Canfield team, found their offensive rhythm led by Lily Scott, who tallied 11 points. Nia Burley and Kennedy Carpenter added 7 and 5 points, respectively, in an effort to counter Canfield’s offensive onslaught.

With this victory, Canfield improves to an 11-7 record, setting the stage for their upcoming clash against Warren Harding on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ursuline (9-9) is poised to bounce back, returning to action on Thursday with a matchup against Springfield. As the regular season progresses, both teams are gearing up for the challenges that lie ahead, determined to leave their mark on the basketball landscape.

TIGERS SHOW THEIR TEETH TO CANFIELD

CANFIELD OH- In a Saturday clash, Howland played party spoiler at Canfield, securing a 49-35 victory over the Cardinals.

Alyssa Massucci led the scoring for Howland with an impressive 20 points, claiming the game-high, while Jessie DeSalvo contributed 10, and Sophia Powell added 7.

Canfield’s effort was led by Cami Hritz with 18 points, followed by Camie Dill with 9, and Carly Fleming with 7.

With the win, Howland (13-4) looks ahead to their next challenge, hosting Fitch on Wednesday. Canfield (10-7) aims to bounce back on Monday with a road trip to face Ursuline, seeking to regain momentum in the competitive season. Howland’s victory on the road showcased their strength and determination in a pivotal matchup.

CANFIELD SIZZLES ON A SATURDAY

CANFIELD OH- Canfield cruised past Salem today 63-27 in a non-conference battle from Canfield High School. It was a story of defense and the offense that it can lead to. The Cardinals forced about as many turnovers as points allowed.

Drew Shapiro racked up steal after steal while chipping in six points in the win. A competitive first quarter was the closest the game with a 16-6 Cardinal lead. From that point, Coach Cullen’s crew pulled away. Each quarter saw them increase its lead. It got to the point where the game turned to the running clock and Coach Andres instructed his team to intentionally foul the entire fourth quarter.

Sam Castronova (13), Dom Cruz (12), and Bryce Roberts (10) led the scoring attack for Canfield. It Lance Bailey led the Quakers in scoring with 6 points while Terry Fink and Deontay Steele both added 4.

BIG FINISH PAVES THE WAY FOR CANFIELD

CANFIELD OH- Canfield showcased their resilience on Friday night, using a dominant final quarter to pull away from Howland with a convincing 54-37 victory. The Cardinals outscored their opponents 20-8 in the fourth quarter, sealing the win.

Leading the scoring for Canfield was Dom Cruz with an impressive 17 points, followed by Sam Castronova contributing 11, and Drew Shapiro with 7. Ben Weaver added 5 points to the team’s balanced attack.

Howland’s Anthony Chieffo led their scoring effort with 9 points, while Chris Fenton and Alex Henry each chipped in with 6.

With a 10-4 record, Canfield now looks ahead to building a new streak as they host Salem on Saturday. Howland will return to the floor on Tuesday, hosting Fitch and seeking to bounce back from the challenging matchup. Canfield’s strong finish demonstrates their ability to rise to the occasion and control the game when it matters most.

CANFIELD CAUSES CONFERENCE CHAOS

CANFIELD OH- The All American Conference (AAC) in high school  basketball might as well be call the wild west with constant conference shootouts and how often there happens to be a new sheriff in town atop the conference standings! On the girls side of the AAC this season, it has been a wild ride to this point with multiple teams looking for the top spot in the conference. On Wednesday night, the conference birds battled it out when The Austintown-Fitch Falcons took the short trip down the road to matchup with The Canfield Cardinals!

A low scoring first half of play commenced and both teams prioritized defense against one another as points were at a premium through the first 16 minutes. Both teams struggled to get points in the first half, unless your name was Grace McQuiston! The Cardinals senior put up 10 of the 15 points for Canfield in the first half as the two teams were all knotted up 15-15 at the halftime buzzer.

After an even first half, The Cardinals separated themselves from Fitch as seven turnovers from The Falcons in the third turned into Canfield outsourcing Fitch 15-7 in the quarter to take a 30-22 lead into the fourth! Keeping the pace the following quarter, Canfield would emerge a bucket better than Austintown in the fourthat 16-13 in the quarter to win the ballgame by a final of 46-35.

Players of the Game went to both Grace McQuiston and Camryn Hritz as McQuiston finished with 17 points and provided big time shots in big time moments, while Hritz finished with 12 points and established herself as a rebounding force in the second half! For Fitch, they were led offensively by Ayla Ray who had 13 points.

Canfield (10-6, 3-3) will stay in conference action when they host Howland (12-4, 2-2) on Saturday, January 27th with a 7 p.m. tip-off. Fitch (11-5, 3-2) will now travel to their rival Boardman (12-4, 4-1) for a big matchup in the AAC, also on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. tip-off. FITCH TURNS THE TABLES ON THE CARDINALS

CANFIELD OH- In a stunning turn of events, Austintown Fitch handed Canfield their first conference loss of the season on Tuesday, securing a 51-46 victory on the road.

Austintown Fitch showcased a balanced offensive effort, with Marcell Finkley leading the charge with 15 points, followed closely by DaShawn Vaughn contributing 13 points. Alex Hill, Allen Hill, and Carter Owens also made impactful contributions, each adding crucial points to the scoreboard.

Canfield, faced with a resilient opponent, fought valiantly but fell short. Dom Cruz and Sam Castranova led the Cardinals’ scoring effort with 10 points each, while Ben Weaver and Jake Delisio chipped in with 8 and 6 points, respectively.

Austintown Fitch (8-5) will continue their road journey on Friday as they travel to face Boardman, seeking to build on their recent success. On the other side, Canfield (9-4) aims to bounce back from this setback on Friday against Howland, with hopes of reclaiming their winning momentum on their home court.

RICCITELLI CROSSES 1000 IN THRILLER OVER CANFIELD

BOARDMAN, OH- It was a memorable day in the Spartan Dome to say the least.  With storylines seemingly cascading from every crevice of Boardman High School, along with the standings in the AAC, it was only fitting that the Lady Spartans and Canfield would need not one, but two extra frames to decide a 63-60 Boardman victory.

Senior Boardman standout and Wooster hoops commit, Mackenzie Riccitelli came into the contest just 4 points shy of the 1000-Point Club, a feat that had only been performed a dozen times before in the history of the program.  It might have been the worst kept secret in the public sector, and Canfield had their eyes set on not allowing the feat to be against them.

With every shot Riccitelli had, the crowd held their breath in anticipation and would release on uncharacteristic misses, as if everybody in the gym could feel the pressure Riccitelli carried on her frame.  The Lady Cardinals held Riccitelli to 3 points going into the third quarter, opening up an opportunity for the likes of Sarah Bero’s powerful performance in the post.

While the anticipated moment came in the third quarter for Riccitelli with an up-and-under layup, you could almost read her body language that there was much left work to do with her teammates to walk away with the bigger accomplishment the day had in store- the season sweep against Canfield.

Canfield’s Camie Dill hit a huge shot at the end of regulation to force overtime, and give the Lady Cards a shift of momentum to their side of the gymnasium, and many thought with six seconds left in overtime that Canfield would spoil the day, until the Lady Spartans found Riccitelli from long distance and 41 splashed one of the biggest shots of her career to send the crowd into a frenzy, and the game into double overtime.

Riccitelli finished with 25-points on the afternoon, Sarah Bero had a big day as well with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  MC Werth gutted out a memorable performance with 12 points to her credit as well.  The duo of Ava Freeborough and Sam Duble each chipped in five points, respectively.

Boardman outrebounded Canfield 44-27 overall, and 20-4 on the offensive boards.

For Canfield, who lost Jenna Triveri just moments into the contest with an ankle injury, Camie Dill (23) and Cami Hritz (15) carried the load for the Cards with 38 points combined.  Carly Fleming had an outstanding performance on both sides of the floor while dropping 8 offensively.  Marina Koenig showed up to the tune of six points, and Grace McQuiston had five.

With the victory, Boardman takes over the top spot in the AAC at 4-1, and 11-4 overall.  Canfield drops to 2-3 in conference and 9-6 on the year.

CANFIELD SEIZES THEIR SECOND CONFERENCE WIN

CANFIELD OH- Canfield notched their second conference win of the season on Wednesday night, securing a convincing 61-33 victory over Warren Harding.

Leading the scoring charge for Canfield, Camie Dill poured in an impressive 18 points, with Cami Hritz closely behind contributing 17 points. Carly Fleming and Jenna Triveri added 6 points each to the winning effort.

With this triumph, Canfield (9-5) sets their sights on reaching double-digit wins as they travel to Boardman on Saturday, aiming to build on their recent success and continue their strong performance in the conference.
