CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 8) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH- As the Canfield Cardinals approach the end of their regular season, the excitement is palpable. In this week’s episode of “Canfield Football Coach’s Corner,” hosted by DJ Yokley at Cocca’s Pizza, Coach Joe Ignazio shared insights on the Cardinals’ recent performance and the critical matchup against the Boardman Spartans.

Reflecting on last week’s game against Howland, Coach Ignazio emphasized the importance of overcoming early setbacks, including costly turnovers. Despite these challenges, a key interception by senior captain Nick Berardino reignited the team’s momentum, showcasing the resilience that has defined Canfield’s season. “Nick gave us a little spark there,” said Ignazio, praising the senior’s leadership and unwavering effort.

Discussing underclassmen like junior Sean Bolling and sophomore Gabe Miller, Ignazio expressed optimism about the future. Both athletes have demonstrated significant growth and potential, providing a robust foundation for upcoming seasons. “Sean is explosive, sometimes he’s so explosive he loses control of his feet,” noted Ignazio, while describing Miller as “a hard kid to tackle” with impressive athleticism and toughness.

The conversation then shifted to Enzo Cocca, the team’s versatile quarterback. Ignazio highlighted Cocca’s developmental strides despite the pressure of following in the footsteps of notable former quarterbacks. “He wants to please his teammates, be successful,” Ignazio remarked, commending Cocca’s dual-role contributions and leadership.

As Canfield prepares to host Boardman in Week 10, the game holds special significance for Ignazio, an alumnus and former teacher from Boardman. Acknowledging the sentimental value, Ignazio remains focused on his current team’s success. “It’s about our seniors and their leadership,” said Ignazio, emphasizing the importance of this game for the graduating class.

Looking ahead to the matchup, Ignazio identified Boardman’s effective wing tee offense and formidable defense as key challenges. “You certainly got to stop the run,” Ignazio stated, underscoring the necessity of a strong trench battle to secure a win.

As Senior Night approaches, Ignazio encourages his players to savor the moment and reflect on their journey. He’s keenly aware of the fleeting nature of high school football and aims to ensure his seniors appreciate the community support and the significance of their final home game.

Canfield’s game against Boardman will be broadcast live on YSN this Friday night. Don’t miss this climactic showdown as the Cardinals strive to advance to Week 11 with momentum and pride.

MEGA POWERS

CANFIELD, OH In a recent feature on the YSN Podcast, Canfield High School senior Joel Rogers, affectionately nicknamed “Mega,” shared insights into his multifaceted life as an athlete, student, and community contributor.

Rogers, known for his role on the Canfield football team, detailed his journey from simply following his older brother into long snapping to becoming a pivotal player on the team. “I kind of just went out there one day with him. We tried it. I did all right at it,” Rogers recounted, describing his transition to the long snapping position. Though he also plays on the offensive and defensive lines, long snapping has become his passion and primary focus.

Beyond the gridiron, Rogers is making significant contributions in his school and the broader community. Known for his can-do attitude, he recently took the initiative to repair a broken jugs machine, an essential tool for the football team’s practice sessions. “I could probably fix that, thinking it’s going to be real quick, easy. And it just kind of stemmed from that,” Rogers humbly explained.

His commitment to community service shines through his involvement with the career center, where he led a project to build a playhouse for Habitat for Humanity. “I felt like I was part of something big,” Rogers reflected, emphasizing the importance of giving back.

Balancing his responsibilities as a student and an athlete, Rogers is also carving out a future in construction. He dreams of starting his own construction company, specializing in woodworking and potentially working on expansive mansions. Influenced by his building and construction teacher, Mr. Benchwick, and his father’s side work, Rogers has developed a keen interest in understanding the mechanics of construction.

Amidst all his endeavors, Rogers finds the most support from his grandmother, his biggest cheerleader. “She hasn’t missed a single one of my events through my whole high school,” he said, showcasing the strong family support system that fuels his achievements.

As the Canfield football team heads into the playoffs, Rogers and his teammates aspire to leave a legacy of hard work and resilience. “We weren’t great our 7th, 8th grade or even our freshman year. But we all sort of just clicked,” Rogers noted, highlighting the team’s journey of growth and unity.

From football fields to community projects, Joel “Mega” Rogers exemplifies dedication, leadership, and a spirit of service, making Canfield proud both on and off the field.

CUT FROM A DIFFERENT CLOTH

CANFIELD, OH- To be a standout athlete involves more than talent—it requires resilience, leadership, and a connection with one’s community. For Carson Cutrer, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for the Canfield Cardinals, this journey is vividly unfolding both on and off the field.

Despite facing adversity this season, Cutrer, along with his teammates, has shown remarkable tenacity. “Tough times create tough men,” he says, quoting coach Hurdley. This mindset is reflective of Cutrer’s own experience of overcoming challenges and propelling his team towards excellence.

Throughout his high school years, Cutrer’s class bore the weight of a less-than-stellar reputation in Canfield football. Today, they aim to be remembered for their unwavering spirit and determination. “We strive for excellence and, you know, just keep going, never stop,” he emphasizes.

Off the field, Cutrer’s interests are a blend of leisure and history. A fan of fishing, Xbox games like GTA and Call of Duty, and history—particularly the eras of Greeks, Spartans, and Romans—Cutrer seamlessly integrates his passions into his personality. He draws parallels between the Spartan warriors and his own experiences in football, likening the camaraderie and battles on the field to those ancient tales of heroism.

Family plays a pivotal role in Cutrer’s life. Living with his mother and supported by his older brothers, he acknowledges his mom as his biggest cheerleader. This support system has been fundamental in shaping his character and drive.

Looking ahead, Cutrer plans to attend Akron University, although he’s yet to choose a major. His goal remains clear: to make a difference in people’s lives and be a reliable figure in his community. With ambitions of owning a GTR and vacations in Australia, Cutrer has his sights set high.

Cutrer’s story is one of growth, resilience, and aspiration—a testament to the values and spirit of the Canfield community. Whether on the field or in his future endeavors, he exemplifies the true essence of a Canfield Cardinal.
