KNIGHTS LAY SECOND LOSS ON LUTHERAN WEST

By Ty Bartell

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — The Archbishop Hoban Knights boys basketball team handed the Lutheran West Longhorns their second loss of the season, clinching a hard-fought 68-62 win in a compelling matchup.  The Knights set the tone in the first quarter, finishing with a 24-17 lead. However, the Longhorns mounted a comeback in the second quarter, outscoring Hoban 15-8 and tying the game at 32-32 as the teams headed to the halftime buzzer.

Coming out of the break, Hoban seized control in the third quarter with a 19-10 run, establishing a 49-42 lead heading into the final frame. Although the Longhorns showcased their best offensive quarter in the fourth, outscoring Hoban 20-17, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Knights, who secured the 68-62 victory.

Offensively, Jonas Nichols led the charge for Hoban, finishing the game with a game-high 22 points. Joey Hardman contributed 12 points, and Sam Greer added 10 points to pace the Knights. On the other side, Lutheran West’s offensive efforts were spearheaded by Jason Levis with 20 points, followed by Matt Meyer with 13 points, and Tino Yli-Nunnila with 12 points.

The win propels Hoban to a 10-6 record, and they will return to The Castle of Barry Gym looking to extend their win streak to four games when they face off against Parma Heights Holy Name (8-6) on Tuesday, January 30th.

For the Longhorns, the loss marked only their second of the season, bringing their record to 14-2. They will aim to regroup when they hit the road to take on Fairview (10-3) on the same Tuesday

evening. Basketball enthusiasts can stay updated on Hoban’s performance throughout the season, with live games, scores, stats, stories, and more available on YSN!

KNIGHTS CROWN A NEW SCORING KING

AKRON OH- The old adage “records are made to be broken” could not be truer in the world of high school sports. With every passing generation wanting to achieve greater than the last, records in the high school world are often the measuring stick for athletes wanting to know if their game is next-level worthy. For The Archbishop Hoban Knights basketball team, one record has stood for the last five plus years and that is the all-time scoring record set by University of Mount Union’s own, Collen Gurley at 1,360 points. However, a new contender for the crown has emerged in Knights senior Jonas Nichols who sat 20 points away from the record on Thursday night.

Hosting in SPIRE Academy, The Knights searched for win number nine on the season as Hoban looks for another winning campaign prior to the start of the tournament. Hoban started a scoring burst early, propelled by the hot hand of Jonas Nichols, allowing The Knights to capture a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. The two squads exchanged big shot after big shot in the second with a beautiful game of anything you can do, I can do better! Hoban would hold the halftime lead 34-26 after outscoring SPIRE by a bucket at 18-16 in the second.

Out of the halftime break and The Knights got the key run they were looking for in the third! Hoban would use lockdown defense to force turnovers and create easy transition looks to really start creating separation from SPIRE! Also in the quarter, with 19 points to his name, Jonas Nichols nailed down the shot to send him to the record books! Becoming the all-time leading scorer at Archbishop Hoban High School was the cherry on top of the 30-8 third quarter by The Knights, effectively holding a commanding 64-34 lead heading to the fourth. Not much changed in the final frame, with Hoban winning the fourth quarter 12-7 and the game by a final of 76-41!

Player of the Game, no doubt, went to Jonas Nichols who finished with 33 points and now holds the crown, passed down from Collen Gurley, as the new scoring king in The Castle! However, Gurley did not live a day without holding at least one record, as The University of Mount Union grad student captured The Purple Raiders scoring record at 1,722 points and counting on Wednesday the day before Jonas broke the Hoban record! Following Nichols, John Johnson had 9 points and Sam Mazzola had 8 points to pace The Knights. Raul Youseff led SPIRE offensively with 11 points followed by Leo Sandoval with 9 points.

Hoban (9-6) will now take their talents on the road to do battle with Lutheran West (13-1) as The Knights and The Longhorns will meet on Saturday, January 27th with a 7 p.m. tip-off. As we here at YSN congratulate Jonas Nichols on his record of 1,373 points and counting at Hoban! The second quarter was much more even, with both teams methodically trying to score the basketball through some ferocious defense! Rogers would get the edge in the quarter 11-10; however, Hoban held the 31-19 advantage heading to the halftime locker room.
At the start of the third quarter, The Rams were on a mission and put together an incredible quarter, spearheaded by Breayah Jefferson who had 13 points in the third as Rogers outscored Hoban 24-18, trimming the deficit, as Hoban led 49-43.  The Knights would get back on track in the fourth, locking things down defensively and closing the game out with a 15-9 fourth to secure their 13th win by a final of 64-52.

STELLAR KNIGHTS DEFENSE EARNS THE WIN

By Ty Bartell

AKRON OH- For the first time since December 10th of last year, The Archbishop Hoban Knights girls basketball team returned home to Barry Gym at The Castle. Undefeated at home this season, The Knights looked to keep the streak rolling when they hosted The Lutheran East Falcons Thursday night.

A higher scoring quarter than usual ensued and both teams were exchanging rapid buckets in transition through the final moments of the first quarter. Hoban would see themselves with a slight edge over Lutheran East 18-12 after the opening quarter. A lopsided second quarter made all the difference in separating The Knights from The Falcons, as a 16-4 second help pad the Hoban lead to 34-16 at the halftime buzzer.
Out of the half, The Falcons threw their best offensive punch at The Knights yet; however, Hoban was ready and had a potent counterpunch of offense themselves when they outscored Lutheran East 23-14 in the third to take full control of the ballgame 56-29 heading to the fourth quarter. Hoban rested most of its starters in the fourth and was able to cruise to the 71-45 win over The Falcons, getting to double-digits in the win column with win number 10 for The Knights this season!

Players of the Game went to MaKenzie Grant and Taylyn Banta! Grant was stellar on the boards and slashing to the bucket as she finished with the double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Banta filled up the box score once again, finishing with 12 points while distributing the rock like a true point guard, including a beautiful one-handed full court dime by the sophomore! Interviews with both Makenzie Grant and Taylyn Banta can be found below! Niera Stevens was also impactful in the box score as “Zig” ended the evening with 10 points.

Finley Kennedy also got loose for 9 points in the Hoban win as a total of 10 different Knights scored in the game! On Lutheran East side, Dakota Porter led all scorers with 13 points and Janae Smith followed her with 11 points. A total of six different players grabbed 4 rebounds a piece for The Falcons.
Hoban (10-1) will go on a three game road stint, starting with The Laurel Gators (6-6) on Wednesday, January 10th with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. Lutheran East (5-5) will now go back home to try and get a win against St. Martin de Porres Lions (6-5) on Monday, January 8th.

EAGLES STAND ABOVE REIGNING STATE CHAMPS

WARREN OH- In an impressive home victory, Warren JFK secured a notable win on Tuesday night against the reigning D1 state champion Hoban, triumphing 67-52.

Leading the charge for JFK, Nico Ciminero delivered a standout performance with 26 points, while Michael Condoleon contributed 15 points, and Jaden Rishel added 13 points. Quinn Meola chipped in with 7 points to round out a balanced offensive effort.

Hoban’s scoring efforts were led by Jonas Nichols and Sam Greer, both contributing 15 points, with Tyler Shadeed adding 6 points.

With this win, JFK maintains an unblemished record at 4-0 and looks ahead to their next matchup on Friday, hosting Mogadore. Hoban, now 1-1, aims to bounce back as they hit the road to face Louisville on Friday in their quest for redemption.

KNIGHTS REFUSE TO BE DENIED A TRIP BACK TO CANTON

By Ty Bartell

PARMA OH- In 2017 The Archbishop Hoban Knights football team moved up from Division 3 to Division 2. In the six seasons prior to this once, since 2017, The Knights have met The Avon Eagles in the playoffs on four different occasions, besting The Eagles in all four of those meetings. However, each game Avon has gotten closer and closer to finally getting over the hump. On Friday night, those two teams would renew their playoff rivalry with their fifth meeting in seven years at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio.

The stage was set and the two squads were ready as they would ever be, coming in as two of the top defenses in the state. With Hoban allowing just a bit over 7 points a game and Avon allowing a hair over 9 points a game. Defense was the focal point as both squads pitched a shutout in the first quarter with some key stops. Scoreless heading to the second quarter, The Eagles would strike first when Blake Elder laser beamed a dime to Matt Maxey from 17 yards out to open up the scoring for Avon. Owen Warrick’s kick was good, making the score 7-0 in favor of The Eagles. Defense would set the tone the rest of the first half until the final two minutes when Hoban was able to get into field goal range for Jeremy Hammel to boot a 24-yard attempt through the uprights, trimming The Knights deficit to four going into halftime.

The Knights would be denied any points on the opening possession of the second half and Avon would respond with a big run by Jakorion Caffey to get them in the red zone before Caffey would cap off the drive with a touchdown run from 6 yards out, effectively making it 14-3 Avon! Things were looking cloudy for The Knights, needing a response and needing it quickly, well, X was gonna give it to ya! Hoban put together a nice third quarter drive, highlighted by a big strike by Xavier Williams with a 39-yard touchdown run to put The Knight back within four at a 14-10 Eagles lead heading into the final quarter.

With Avon in the midst of a drive to end the third quarter, they opened up the fourth with the ball. That is when the Hoban defense, which had not created a turnover to that point, got a big time interception from Elbert Hill to give The Knight the ball back. Hoban put together another effective drive, getting it to the goal line and finishing it out with a touchdown run from Caleb Jones 2 yards out! The extra point from Hammel just hooked inside the left upright to make it 17-14 Hoban, late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles would have an opportunity to have the final drive which they were able to get into a long field goal try; however, the attempt would fall short by a few yards to seal the game 17-14 in favor of Hoban in the closest game between these two teams yet! Xavier Williams, one of the Players of the Game, finished the night with 99 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown. Find his interview, as well as interviews with Elbert Hill and Coach Tim Tyrrell can be found below!

The win for The Knights (13-1) gets them on the doorstep of completing the comeback from the last season as they will square-off with longtime rival, The Massillon-Washington Tigers (15-0). These two teams have been on a collision course all season long and the most anticipated matchup in Ohio high school football is now slated for Thursday, November 30th at 7 p.m. at the historic Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium with The Division 2 State Championship on the line!

HOBAN SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE YEAR

In a highly anticipated Week 10 matchup, Hoban, who entered the game undefeated, faced off against St. Edward’s in a defensive battle that would ultimately hand Hoban their first loss of the year. The final score stood at 14-7 in favor of St. Edward’s.

The first quarter saw a significant play from Hoban as Eli Lee intercepted a pass and returned it for a pick-six, with Ryan Burns successfully converting the PAT to give Hoban an early 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, St. Edward’s responded with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Kellen Moyer, and the PAT was good, leveling the score at 7-7.

The third quarter remained scoreless, setting the stage for a decisive fourth quarter. St. Edward’s seized the moment when Brandon White scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown, with Kellen Moyer again converting the PAT to secure the 14-7 victory for St. Edward’s.

HOBAN SHOWS RESILIENCE TO STAY UNDEFEATED

ALLIANCE OH-  On a Thursday night showdown between two of the top volleyball teams in the region, The Archbishop Hoban Knights had, yet another, big test on the season in order to keep their undefeated year alive! Rattling off 17 consecutive wins to start the season, Hoban entered Thursday with the perfect 17-0 record and were coming off a win against previously 15-1 Hiland. Their opponent was no slouch in their own right, as The Knights hit the road towards Marlington to battle The Dukes. Marlington, in the midst of another successful season, entered their matchup with Hoban sporting a very good 18-2 record! All the pieces were there for intense battle and did these two teams ever deliver!

The first set saw The Dukes blast The Knights out of the gates, hitting Hoban with everything they got and beating them to the spots almost every time in the opening set. Swing errors did not help The Knights as Marlington rode their opening set lead to an emphatic 25-12 win, putting a ton of pressure on Hoban to claw back on the road. The Knights did just that, finding a nice response in the second set by battling themselves away from The Dukes with some key rallies. Hoban would take an important set two, knotting the match up 1-1 in sets.

Being on the road is never easy and Hoban Head Coach Jim Maloof knows that, but “The consecutive road matches at the end of the season are intentional, what are you playing deep in the tournament? On the road.” Maloof said. It did not get any easier when marlington re-took the set lead with a 25-19 set three victory, giving The Dukes at handing Hoban their first loss this season. This would be only the second time this entire season where The Knights would trail in a match 2-1. Fighting tooth and nail in set four, Hoban knew it was now or never to get it done and they got it done. A sweaty palm type battle ensued in set four and lasted all the way till the very end.

The Knights would squeak out a 25-23 set four win to set up an ever important set five for the match! After a bit of back-and-forth, Hoban went pedal to the metal in the deciding set and never looked back. Racing their way to the 15-8 set win and clinching the match on the road over The Dukes 3-2!

Amber Watson was grabbing scores anyway that she could, leading the team in both kills with 14 and aces with 5. Macie Mintz recorded 22 digs to lead her team defensively. Sophia Day had the quarter-piece on assist in the match with 25 in the win. While Bailey Prince remained a force at the fence, charting 3 blocks for The Knights on the night. Hoban (18-0) will look to keep their undefeated season alive when they stay on the road to do battle with The Chardon Hilltoppers (6-11) on Monday, October 9th.
