YOUNGSTOWN OH-  Cardinal Mooney High School’s standout athlete Natalie Blasko has earned a rare distinction off the field, being named one of only 25 girls in Ohio to receive the Academic All-American title for girls lacrosse this year. Blasko, who balances a rigorous slate of Advanced Placement and college-level courses with her athletic commitments, holds an impressive 4.3 GPA. She credits her achievements to relentless hard work, supportive coaches and teammates, and a drive to challenge herself academically. “Taking those AP classes and doing well on those AP exams really puts you up there for a lot of different opportunities,” Blasko shared in a recent interview on YSN.

She also praised teachers Ms. Policy, Ms. Cooper, and Mr. Beta for their guidance, as well as coach Tony Sheen for support both in sports and school. Blasko is currently preparing for her senior year, aiming to push her GPA even higher as she takes additional AP and college classes through Youngstown State University’s CCP program. Looking ahead, Blasko plans to pursue a career in nursing and hopes to become a nurse anesthetist, with Ohio State University at the top of her college wish list. Despite her achievements, Blasko remains focused and humble, determined to finish her high school career strong. “I still want to push through and do as best as I can,” she said. JEFFERSON OH — Few freshmen make their mark on varsity sports quite like Alaina Barress has this softball season. Sitting down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig, Barress spoke about her stellar debut and the determination that’s powered her through adversity.

Coming off a significant injury that sidelined her for six months, Barress credits her rigorous offseason work for her immediate impact. “I’ve worked really hard in the offseason…showing up in the open gyms, and I think it’s showing,” Barress said. Transitioning from middle school to high school is no small leap, but Barress has handled it with poise both on the field and in the classroom, juggling honors courses alongside a demanding athletic schedule. Time management and using school hours wisely have been key. “I try to keep up with my grades… and if I do have homework, I just get it done that night so I’m not running behind,” she explained.

Barress also praised her teammates and coaches for creating a welcoming, team-first environment. Senior standouts like Allie Hill and Marilia have been role models, while her coaches and family—especially her father, who doubles as her coach—have provided continuous support. Despite the hectic spring weather and frequent schedule changes, Barress keeps her competitive edge with pre-game rituals and a tight-knit team dynamic. “I always have to have two French braids…and flip my batting gloves three times before I step in the box,” she shared. As she nears the end of a memorable freshman campaign, Barress is already looking to inspire the next wave of underclassmen. Her advice: “Look up to the older girls and put the work in, because it will really pay off during the season.” With young stars like Alaina Barress, the future of Jefferson softball looks bright.

Bell, alongside classmates Jace and Jay, forms the backbone of Ursuline’s sophomore class. Their shared history dates back to playing together in eighth grade on the AAU circuit, fostering a chemistry that translates into strong performances on the court. “We love playing with each other. We all love each other on and off the court, and it shows out there,” said Bell, expressing the camaraderie among teammates. Druschel highlights her ability to balance participation in four varsity sports while maintaining strong academic performance. She attributes her success to the support of her family, coaches, and teachers, particularly Mr. Plum, an influential English teacher. Although science proved to be a challenging subject, Druschel’s dedication and determination have helped her overcome obstacles. WELLSVILLE, OH- Wellsville High School standout Bella Poppelriter has recently committed to continuing her athletic career at Bethany College, where she will play volleyball. Poppelriter, known for her remarkable skills on both the basketball court and volleyball court, joined the YSN podcast to discuss her journey and future plans.

In a candid interview with host DJ Yokley, Bella recounted her recent basketball feats, including a career-high 31 points against Leetonia. Yokley praised her athletic prowess and leadership qualities, noting her ability to score, call out plays, and make pivotal defensive moves.

Despite her success in basketball, Poppelriter explained her choice to pursue volleyball at the collegiate level. “I just developed this love for volleyball. It’s so fun to me,” she shared. Bella emphasized that being part of a successful volleyball team contributed significantly to her passion for the sport.
