CARDINALS BRING HOME ANOTHER AAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Canfield Girls Soccer Secures AAC Championship with 3-0 Win Over Boardman

In a thrilling match that carried the weight of the AAC championship, the Canfield girls’ soccer team showcased their skill and determination to emerge victorious. Canfield’s impressive performance led them to a 3-0 win over Boardman, securing their title as the AAC champions.

The Canfield squad, with an outstanding season record of 15-0-1, knew they had to bring their A-game against a formidable opponent like Boardman. They did not disappoint, demonstrating their exceptional teamwork and prowess on the field.

The scoreboard came alive thanks to the Canfield offense, with Hannah Wahib leading the charge with two well-executed goals. Wahib’s scoring prowess was on full display, leaving the opposition’s defense with little answer.

Adding to Canfield’s offensive showcase was Maci Toporcer, who notched a goal of her own. The teamwork and precision displayed by the Canfield squad were highlighted by the assists provided by Lexi Toporcer, setting up the scoring opportunities with precision.

In the net, Canfield’s goalkeeper, Lolo Padgett, displayed her skill and composure by making a crucial save. Padgett’s solid performance ensured that Canfield maintained control of the game’s tempo.

Boardman’s Faith Watson, meanwhile, exhibited her talents with nine saves, doing her best to thwart Canfield’s relentless offensive efforts. Despite the formidable opposition, Watson’s efforts in goal showcased her determination and ability.

Canfield’s dominance was further evident in the shot count, as they outshot Boardman 24 to 3. Their aggressive and composed play allowed them to dictate the pace of the game, leading to their well-deserved victory.

HAVRILLA CONTINUES TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY

CANFIELD OH- Every now and then an athlete comes across a community that leaves a legacy that lasts long after they go. In Canfield AJ Havrilla has slowly but surely continued to make his mark on the local baseball scene.  He’s done it all, from rocking the show in the high school level with Canfield, to dominating the local travel scene in Class B Baseball, and even representing Youngstown against the world in Texas at the Palomino World Series.  Havrilla and his teammates have punched that ticket to Texas yet again has he has one last chance to leave another mark on Youngstown baseball before going on to play at Marshall in college.

AJ’s senior season at Canfield was nothing short of what everyone expected. He stayed loose and had fun all the way to team leading batting average of .431.  That included with his impressive stat of only striking out 4 times all season was enough to earn him a nod as YSN’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year.  He was also named the NEOBCA Division II Player of the Year.  He would follow up his success with the Red Birds to dominate the summer with the Dirty Birds.  The Astro Falcons dominated the 18u Class B division all the summer with AJ as a headliner of the lineup.  It was his fifth year playing with the Falcons 18u squad, and made every rep worth it.  That same team won the Class B playoffs, and then went on to win the Palomino East Zone Championship to pack their bags to Texas to compete against the world.

AJ was kind enough to take some time to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig before preparing for his last weekend playing baseball for Youngstown. They talk about his long career, moving on to Marshall, and so much more.  Check out this exclusive interview with AJ Havrilla only on YSN!

SLAVEN MAKES THE HEALTHY CHOICE

CANFIELD OH- Canfield comes in to the 2022 season loaded with senior leadership.  Six seniors grace the floor every time the Cardinals go in to battle.  One of those seniors is Carly Skaven. With every senior bringing their own brand of leadership qualities, Slaven is definitely the one that leads by example. She’s the first to show up and the last to leave.  That tireless work ethic shows everyone on the team what the standard for success is. Because of leaders like that, lasting impacts of seniors goes on long after they leave the program. Carly is certainly hoping to see footprints of her legacy visible years after she’s done playing.  She’ll teach players how to be accountable, how to set obtainable goals, and maybe how to make their diet just a little bit healthier. As you’ll find out in the interview below, Slaven is always making the healthy snack choice, even when she’s treating herself.

Carly took the time to sit in on YSN’s Running Point this week and dive in to her senior season. She talks to Anthony Hartwig and Richie Juliano about what it feels like to be a senior, things she will treasure about this program, and much more.
