Struthers, OH — Senior Ava Croyle is not just a name on the Struthers girls basketball roster; she’s a beacon of talent, leadership, and ambition, ready to make her final year memorable on and off the court.

The Struthers standout, who has been dedicated to basketball since she was four, is facing the bittersweet reality of her last season. “I’m so excited but also real sad because I’ve been playing since I was four years old, and I’m just so grateful for all the opportunities that I’ve had,” Ava shared during an interview with. Ava’s senior year isn’t simply about reflecting on past glories; it’s about stepping up as a leader. Inspired by her older sister, Ella Royal, who also led the team during Ava’s freshman year, she aims to be a supportive and encouraging leader. “I strive to be just like her and help everybody just be the best that they can and have a fun time this year,” Ava said. Ava believes that last year’s near misses in close games have only fueled the team’s determination to emerge victorious this season. “We’re really pushing this year to try to be the team who comes out on top.”

Beyond basketball, Ava is also excelling academically. Taking full-time classes at Youngstown State University (YSU) while still a high school student, she demonstrates a remarkable level of commitment and maturity. Despite the demanding schedule, Ava manages to balance her responsibilities and enjoy her time with friends and teammates. “It gives me such a good balance between work and school, and I’m putting in work in games and practices and stuff, but I still have fun with my friends,” she noted. After high school, Ava has her sights set on becoming a mechanical engineer and eventually owning her own business. “I’ve always loved to build things and figure out the way things worked. I’ve loved physics and math my whole life,” she explained.

Ava credits her family, teachers, and coaches for her successes, highlighting the close-knit community of Struthers as a significant source of support. “Repping Struthers is one of the best things that I could do because it’s such a great community, and I love living in it,” she proudly stated. Academically, Heineman has a soft spot for history, with a particular interest in World War II due to its intricate warfare strategies. However, his career aspirations lay elsewhere. Inspired by the bravery and heroics of firefighters, particularly highlighted during the 9/11 attacks, Heineman aims to pursue a career in firefighting. Zaid, who has been an integral part of the Raiders this season, spoke fondly of the unwavering support from the South Range community. “They’ve always been there since day one. Having primarily been a baseball player, Zaid made the switch to football during his senior year. The decision was driven by his desire to have fun with friends and play alongside his younger brother, a junior. “It’s my senior year and I want to enjoy it with my friends and my brother,” he shared. NILES OH- In a season marked by groundbreaking achievements and unyielding dedication, the Niles Girls Soccer team has secured their first-ever NE8 Championship, guided in part by standout sophomore Maddie Yost. “It’s great,” says Maddie. “Our team is pretty young, with some freshmen starting, so it’s amazing to have this experience.” Under the watchful eye of Coach Scott McMillan, the team’s hard work and early 6:00 AM conditioning sessions paid off, culminating in a historic victory.

“Our hunger was immense,” Yost admits. “We wanted it so bad; we conditioned early and maintained focus even when the goal seemed just within reach.” Practicing with seriousness and camaraderie alike, the team’s chemistry on and off the field played a pivotal role. “We do a lot of team bonding—swimming, movie nights at Coach Scott’s house,” Yost recounts. Notably, Maddie Yost herself emerged as a leader, despite being just a sophomore. Described as vocal and focused, she captained the team alongside seniors Natalia Tate and Gianna Wagner. This leadership has nurtured a successful environment, fostering growth among the younger players.

The team’s success has resonated throughout the Niles community, rallying fans and unifying the school behind their triumph. Yost reflects, “It’s amazing to see everyone come out and support us.
