CANFIELD TAKES CARE OF HOLY NAME TO ADVANCE TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

EUCLID, OH- The Canfield Cardinals took down the Holy Name Green Wave in the state semifinal to advance to the state championship for the first time since 2005. Senior quarterback Broc Lowry ran all over the Green Wave defense with 4 rushing touchdowns in the first half to build a significant lead that the Cardinals would hang onto and win the state semifinal.

Canfield received the ball to begin the game, and it was smooth sailing as Lowry ran it in from 50 yards out to take the first lead. Holy Name would come back and respond with a touchdown from quarterback Jayvon Williams to tie it at 7. Later in the first, Lowry and company came down the field and once again scored on a 24 yard rusher from Lowry to make it 14-7. Canfield’s defense would get a stop, and Lowry busted out a big rushing touchdown of 75 yards to take a 21-7 lead. With under 3 minutes left to play in the half, Canfield came down the field and Lowry punched it in with his fourth rushing touchdown of the half to make it 28-7.

To open up the second half, the Canfield defense forced there first 3 and out of the game. The Cardinals would put 3 points on the board with a 32 yard field goal from senior kicker Joel Miasek. On the next Green Wave drive, fullback Austin Wondolowski would pick up hist first touchdown to make it 31-14, Canfield. Holy name would get on the board again in the fourth quarter with a 75 yard trick play from wide receiver Kevin Pivonka to cut it down to 31-21. Canfield on the next drive would put the hammer down with a 1 yard rushing touchdown from Danny Inglis to win the ballgame 38-21.

The Cardinals will play at Tom Benson Hall Of Fame Stadium next Friday at 3 PM for the state championship. Canfield will take on region 11 winner Bloom-Carroll (14-1), for a chance at the programs first ever state tittle.
