LEETONIA BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MICHAEL HEIN

LEETONIA OH- In the heart of Leetonia, anticipation is mounting as the Bears boys basketball team, led by head coach Michael Hein, prepares to embark on what promises to be an exhilarating season. With a veteran roster and a renewed sense of purpose, the Bears are ready to take the EOAC by storm.

Coach Hein, who is entering his fourth year with the program and second year as head coach, has been a cornerstone in the development of this team. Hein’s familiarity with the players, many of whom he’s mentored since they left middle school, adds an extra layer of confidence as they aim high this season. Hein emphasizes the importance of senior leadership, resilience, and a hard-nosed defensive approach, qualities that he believes will propel the Bears into the upper echelon of the EOAC.

“Our strength lies in our resilience,” Hein remarked. “The last few seasons have been tough, but the mental toughness we’ve developed will serve us well. We’re pushing to be not just competitive, but a top contender in our conference.” The Leetonia community is abuzz with excitement, especially after seeing the resurgence in participation, including the reformation of a freshman team for the first time in over a decade. Hein attributes this to the dedicated support from parents, teachers, and community members.

As for the league outlook, Hein is realistic yet optimistic. He acknowledges formidable opponents like East Palestine, Valley, and Columbiana but is determined to see the Bears finish in the top half of the league. “Every game is a challenge, but with our experience and determination, we believe we can succeed,” he said. The Bears open their season on December 3rd at home against Urban Scholars, and Hein is hopeful the community will come out in force. “These young men embody the spirit of Leetonia—small town, big heart. We’re ready to make you proud.” While Hein and his team focus on the hardwood, he’s also looking forward to some Thanksgiving traditions, admitting a particular fondness for turkey and stuffing. With the season tip-off just around the corner, all eyes in Leetonia will be on the Bears, as Coach Hein’s squad aims to surprise and impress, carrying the hopes of a community on their shoulders.

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH NATHAN TOY

CANFIELD, OH – At the cozy ambiance of GIAngelo’s on 224, South Range’s Coach Nathan Toy took center stage for a heartwarming edition of the “South Range Coach’s Corner,” hosted by DJ Yokley. Toy, stepping in for the under-the-weather Dave Rock, provided fans with an intimate glimpse into his storied coaching career and the special place football holds in his family.

Twelve years deep into coaching, Toy shared his deep-rooted passion for football, citing its importance in his household and its central role in bringing him back to South Range. “Football was always a priority in our household…one of the reasons I came back,” Toy reminisced.

For the Toys, football is more than just a game— it’s a legacy. Nathan Toy is part of a third-generation tradition at South Range, a heritage that extends to his children. “Being able to coach my sons and watch my cousins and their kids play is one of the best things,” Toy highlighted, emphasizing the deep familial ties to the program.

The transition from a player to a coach wasn’t without its challenges, Toy admitted, particularly when it comes to teaching and relating to today’s athletes in a fast-evolving game. “It’s trying to relate to the kids in real-time,” he stated. But with the support of a robust coaching staff and a strong focus on motivation, Toy has found his stride.

Toy’s youngest son, Tristan, currently stands out as a star player and 2024 NE8 Co-Player of the Year, a point of immense pride for the coach. “I try not to coach him at home… I just let him be,” Toy said, acknowledging the fine balance between being a coach and a father.

The conversation also turned to Toy’s daughter, Anna, who has carved out a remarkable volleyball career, noted for her tenacity and competitive spirit. “She’s more competitive than Tristan… I really enjoy watching her play,” Toy shared with a smile.

One topic that drew emotional reflection was the unwavering support from Toy’s wife, who has been a pillar through countless moves and long seasons. “I couldn’t do it without her, and I thank her,” Toy expressed deeply.

As DJ Yokley closed the segment, he emphasized the communal support and pride that South Range families, like the Toys, bring to the program. “South Range football isn’t just about the game— it’s about family, legacy, and community.” Clearly, under the guidance of coaches like Nathan Toy, the future of South Range football continues to shine bright.

THE SOUND OF DIMUZIO

CANFIELD, OH-  At the intersection of passion and perseverance stands South Range High School senior, Zander Dimuzio, a student-athlete who deftly navigates the demanding worlds of both golf and football. In a recent interview on the YSN podcast, hosted by DJ Yokley, Dimuzio, affectionately known as “Z,” opened up about his journey and the challenges he faces.

Having picked up golf at a young age, Dimuzio described his devotion to the sport with a hint of nostalgia. “Golf became my primary focus early on, but my friends got me into football, and I’ve really enjoyed it,” he shared. His casual demeanor, however, belies the immense dedication required to excel in two demanding sports while maintaining strong academic performance.

“In golf, you have to be locked in and concentrated, whereas football demands physical prowess and time in the weight room,” Dimuzio noted. His regimen includes utilizing every moment wisely, often completing assignments during school hours to stay ahead.

When asked about his biggest challenge in golf, Dimuzio candidly admitted, “My putting could use some work, but I’m a pretty solid driver.” He expressed admiration for icons such as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, selecting them for his fantasy golf foursome along with his Coach Rach—a reflection of his competitive spirit and sense of humor.

Transitioning to the gridiron, Dimuzio’s competitive edge is evident in his playful trash-talking, particularly against rival Poland golfers. Despite his talents, he remains grounded, indicating no plans to pursue collegiate sports. Instead, Dimuzio aspires to study dentistry at Ohio State University, drawn by the prospect of a comprehensive campus experience and proximity to family.

Support from his parents, friends, and coaches has been instrumental in his success. With heartfelt acknowledgment, he shared, “I’m very grateful for my mom and dad always cheering me on. Not everyone has that, and I don’t take it for granted.”

As South Range continues its winning streak, aiming for success against Gerrard, Dimuzio remains focused on teamwork and community representation. “I feel like I have to represent, do my job, and try my best for the community and my family,” he said, encapsulating his ethos.

Whether on the fairways or the football field, Zander Dimuzio exemplifies dedication, balancing a busy schedule while aiming for personal and team excellence. His journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with passion and time management, it is possible to excel on multiple fronts.

WARREN JFK CROSSS COUNTRY COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JILL PHILLIPS

WARREN, OH-  The corridors of Warren JFK High School echo with the triumphant strides of its burgeoning cross country team, thanks to the relentless efforts and nurturing guidance of head coach Jill Phillips. Taking over a nearly dormant program four years ago, Phillips has steadily transformed it from a team of just one boy and one girl to a thriving group of dedicated athletes.

“It’s been an incredible journey. We now have a full varsity girls team and three varsity boys, with more talents rising from junior high,” Phillips shared in a recent episode of “YSN Coach’s Corner” hosted by DJ Yokley.

Phillips, a Kennedy alum herself, is no stranger to the highs and lows of athletics. After tearing her ACL in high school, she developed a passion for running during her recovery, setting her on a path that would ultimately lead her back to JFK—this time as a coach. Her story serves as both an inspiration and a testament to the power of resilience and dedication.

Despite the challenges of recruiting in a small school environment packed with competing sporting disciplines, Phillips has managed to build a team united not just by their love of running, but by a shared commitment to growth and mutual encouragement. “You don’t join cross country to be with your buddies. These kids just love to run,” she said.

Known for her constant positivity and encouragement, Coach Phillips fosters a supportive environment where even shaving a single second off one’s best time is celebrated as a victory. “Everything that they do that’s just a little bit better than the day before is success,” she emphasized.

Phillips is especially glowing when she speaks of her “OGs,” seniors, who joined the team without prior experience and have now become the pillars of the program through their unwavering dedication and leadership.

Beyond her role as a coach, Phillips is deeply woven into the fabric of the JFK community, balancing her responsibilities with the support of a loving family that shares her commitment to the school. “This is my home and it always will be,” she affirmed.

Under her guidance, the future looks bright for the Warren JFK cross country program, a beacon of what passion, positivity, and perseverance can achieve.

LOWELLVILLE, OH-   In a community where football often dominates the headlines, one senior cross-country runner is making waves with her determination, resilience, and outstanding performances. Kenzie McCormick, a senior at Louisville High School, recently featured on the popular podcast on YSN demonstrated that she runs not just for fun, but for personal growth and satisfaction.

Starting her running journey in her sophomore year after not making the cheerleading team, McCormick has since found a passion in cross country that she describes as somewhat addictive. “It’s just me against me every time,” she revealed during her interview, with no full team to represent her school, Kenzie shoulders not just the weight of her own goals, but also the pride of the Lady Rockets.

One of the standout aspects of her running career is her ability to thrive in challenging conditions. “I run better in cold and rainy weather,” McCormick explained, adding a unique twist to her narrative. This resilience will be put to the test once more as she prepares for the Spartan Race this Saturday, an event boasting around 6,000 runners.

Off the course, Kenzie is just as remarkable. Balancing her athletic commitments with academics, she plans to pursue a career in pre-dentistry post-graduation. Her strong mentality and compassionate outlook are traits she hopes to pass on to her younger siblings, contributing to a cycle of strength and empathy in her family.

Her story is not just one of athletic prowess but of personal transformation. From a heartbroken freshman missing out on a cheerleading spot to a poised and passionate senior ready to take on new challenges, Kenzie McCormick embodies the spirit of perseverance.

As her senior year speeds by, McCormick’s main goal is to set a new personal record in cross country, aiming for a finish time of 24 minutes. Whether or not she clinches that goal, she has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on her school and community, setting an example of how setbacks can lead to unforeseen opportunities and newfound passions.
