SALEM CANT FIND THEIR FOOTING

SALEM OH-  Salem ran into trouble Saturday and couldn’t dig out, falling to Massillon Perry 12-1 after an eight-run explosion in the fourth inning flipped the game on its head.

Perry got on the board early, taking advantage of a dropped third strike and a groundout to plate two in the top of the first. They tacked on two more in the third with a double and a fielder’s choice to make it 4-0.

Then came the fourth. Salem couldn’t stop the bleeding as Perry strung together three hits, mixed in a few freebies, and took full advantage of a couple defensive miscues. When the dust settled, eight runs had crossed the plate, and the Quakers were suddenly staring down a 12-0 hole.

Salem got one back in the bottom half thanks to a Colin Riesen RBI, and Bairon Exline chipped in a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate, but it wasn’t nearly enough to close the gap.

Braydon Van Dyne got the start and battled through 3.2 innings, striking out three but running into trouble in that big fourth frame. On the flip side, Perry’s starter went the full five innings, holding Salem to just one run on four hits without a walk.

Perry finished with nine hits and played clean defense, while also swiping four bags on the basepaths. The Quakers now regroup and look ahead to a road trip to Girard on Monday.

BOLCHALK, EAGLES BLANK SALEM AT EASTWOOD

NILES, OH- Freddy Bolchalk was lights out on Saturday, tossing a complete game shutout to lead Warren JFK past Salem 3-0 at Eastwood Field. The senior right-hander struck out 11, gave up just three hits, and didn’t walk a single batter in a dominant outing on the mound.

Both teams got strong pitching performances, but it was JFK who struck first — and ultimately, last. The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles, highlighted by a Michael Bartoe RBI knock to give them a 1-0 lead.

JFK added two more runs over the next few innings, including an RBI from Landon Snyder, while the defense backed up Bolchalk with clean fielding and no errors.

Bartoe finished 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Snyder chipped in with a key RBI. Salem’s Colin Riesen took the loss despite a solid effort, tossing four innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three.

Troy Gibson, Riesen, and Brayden Van Dyne each had a hit for Salem, who also turned a double play in the loss.

Warren JFK is back in action Tuesday as they hit the road to face Alliance.

RAIDERS RUN AWAY FROM SALEM ON THE ROAD

SALEM, OH – South Range rolled into historic John A. Cabas Gymnasium and put on a clinic, steamrolling Salem 69-40 in a statement win. The Raiders controlled the game from the opening tip, showcasing relentless defense and an explosive offensive attack.

Luke Rohan was unstoppable, torching the Quakers for a game-high 29 points. He had the hot hand all night, knocking down shots from everywhere on the floor. Nate Lewis added 13 points, while Tristan Toy and Graham Heikkinen each chipped in 10.

Salem struggled to find rhythm against the Raiders’ pressure. Evan Jones led the Quakers with 11 points, while Ty Manion added 7. Despite flashes of solid play, Salem couldn’t keep pace with South Range’s firepower.

With the victory, the Raiders turn their focus to senior night on Monday before shifting gears for the postseason. They’ll open OHSAA tournament play against Crestview on Saturday, looking to carry their momentum into the playoffs.
