RAIDERS PUNCH TICKET TO REGIONAL FINALS

MINERVA, OH- South Range put on a show under the Friday night lights, steamrolling Garaway 42-14 in a game where the Raiders looked nearly unstoppable. From the opening whistle, it was clear South Range had one goal: dominate. And dominate they did.

The Raiders came out swinging, and quarterback Tristan Toy wasted no time. Less than two minutes into the game, Toy broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown sprint to light up the scoreboard. A few drives later, it was running back Aiden Dominguez’s turn. Backed up at their own 3-yard line, Dominguez ripped through Garaway’s defense for a jaw-dropping 97-yard touchdown run, leaving defenders in his rearview mirror.

Garaway showed some life in the second quarter when Dillon Soehnlen broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run. But Toy responded before the half, threading a perfect pass to Gaven Nagy for a 19-yard touchdown, putting South Range up 21-7 at the break.

The second half was more of the same. Toy punched in two more touchdowns on the ground, bringing his total to three for the night. He wasn’t just torching Garaway with his legs; Toy was a surgeon through the air, completing 11 of 13 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Dylan Smesko capped off the scoring for South Range in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, hammering the final nail in Garaway’s coffin.

South Range’s defense deserves just as much credit. They held Garaway to 93 rushing yards and only 67 through the air. The Pirates’ QB, Brady Geibel, was constantly under duress, with South Range racking up two sacks and multiple tackles for loss. Linebacker Luke Starkey led the charge with eight solo tackles and a key stop behind the line.

The Stat Sheet
– Tristan Toy: 82 rushing yards, 3 rushing TDs, 157 passing yards, 1 passing TD.
-Aiden Dominguez 141 rushing yards on 24 carries, 1 TD.
–Gaven Nagy: 6 receptions, 73 yards, 1 TD.

Garaway’s lone bright spot was Dillon Soehnlen, who rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with the Raiders’ relentless attack.

South Range (13-0) moves on to the regional finals, where they’ll look to keep their postseason dreams alive against NE8 rival, Poland (11-2).  The two teas met at Rominger Stadium in Week 6 with Poland starting the game with a 14-point lead before South Range marched back to win the game 38-30.  The rematch can be seen on YSN with a kickoff set for 7pm.

WESTERN RESERVE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 4) WITH JOHN ARMENI

BERLIN CENTER, OH- In a Friday night showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Western Reserve football team staged a thrilling comeback to clinch an unforgettable victory against McDonald. Down 21-7 just before halftime, Coach John Armeni’s squad dug deep to turn the tide in a nail-biting game that left even the seasoned coach with a few extra gray hairs.

With over a minute to go in the first half and the ball in their possession, Coach Armeni seized the moment, urging quarterback Chris Pater to score before the break. “We used our hurry-up offense, something we practice a couple of times a week but rarely use until the situation dictates it. We executed it perfectly,” Armeni recounted in a post-game interview. Heading into halftime down by only one touchdown revitalized the team and sent a clear message to McDonald: They were far from finished.

A second-half surge saw Western Reserve pulling ahead, but McDonald fought back, knotting the score at 28-28 to force overtime. Winning the toss, McDonald opted to put Western Reserve on offense first. Coach Armeni’s strategy paid off, driving his team downfield to score and convert. True to their coach’s prediction, McDonald went for two after their own touchdown attempt, but defensive shuffling and sound preparation from Western Reserve made the difference. “Our best kids against their best kids. Who makes the play?” the coach noted, pointing to a key pass deflection that ultimately sealed the victory.

Standout performances came from both sides of the ball. Calebson anchored the defense, frequently charging into McDonald’s backfield, while Jack Darnay etched his name in highlight reels with an 89-yard rush and a sterling all-around performance including 180 rushing yards, 101 receiving yards, and ten tackles. “He’s grown as a leader, and the younger kids emulate that,” praised Armeni.

As Western Reserve moves forward with a 4-1 record, they look ahead to a grudge match against Louisville Rockets, the very team that ended their playoff run last year. “Our kids remember them ending our season. This game is one they want,” Armeni stated.

Despite the pressure and high stakes, Armeni instills a balanced perspective in his team. “I tell the guys all the time, you know, don’t wish it away. Enjoy the ride, because it can end at any moment.”

Reflecting on Louisville’s renowned concessions, Armeni humorously recalled a moment from early in his career when the taste of post-defeat Cavitelli briefly lifted spirits. This time, however, he and his team aim to return with a sweeter victory to savor.

Fans eagerly anticipate another hard-fought game, hoping Western Reserve can extend their season of thrilling performances.
