CARDINALS COME BACK TO BEAT URSULINE 58-50
CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals hosted the Ursuline Irish in a non-conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night. These two programs are atop the best in the district this season in division two. The Irish had a comfortable lead in the first half, but a late spark by Canfield pushed them past the Irish by a final of 58-50.
In the first quarter, Ursuline senior shooting guard Vinny Flauto had four three pointers to score 12 of the Ursuline 18 points. The Irish and the Cardinals went back and forth in the second quarter to head to the locker room with Ursuline leading 30-25. In the third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Irish 23-11 with Canfield junior guard Tony Russo scoring 10 points to take a 48-41 lead at the end of three quarters. Canfield clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter to hold the Irish to just nine total points in the final eight minutes. The Cardinals rallied back to win 58-50.
The Cardinals were led by Russo who scored 21 points, while junior forward Jake Schneider also contributed with eight points. Ursuline was led by Vinny Flauto and Terrance Pankey who each had 14 points.
Ursuline is now 3-1 and will host Grand River Academy at 7 P.M. on Saturday night. Canfield is now 3-1 on the season and will travel to Mooney this Friday. Head Coach John Cullen accomplished 600 career wins after tonight’s victory. Here is what coach Cullen had to say after the win:
