Story by Larry Jennings
Ashtabula, OH- In a clash that saw bats blazing and runs flowing, the Edgewood Warriors emerged victorious over Lakeside in a thrilling softball encounter, with a standout performance by Mckenna Vencill leading the charge.
The game, which unfolded on Tuesday, witnessed the Edgewood Warriors overpowering Lakeside with a commanding 16-6 victory, showcasing their offensive prowess right from the opening inning.
Mckenna Vencill proved to be the star of the show, delivering a stellar performance at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats, and scoring four runs, to fuel the Warriors’ triumph. Vencill’s hitting clinic included a single in the first inning, a double in the fourth, and another single in the fifth, leaving Lakeside’s defense struggling to contain her onslaught.
However, Vencil wasn’t the only offensive force for the Edgewood Warriors, as the team exploded for an impressive 11 runs in the first inning alone. Contributions came from across the lineup, with players like Lucianna Paolillo, Makenna Rhodes, and Addison Lamson delivering key hits and RBIs to fuel the early onslaught.
Pitching wise, Mckenna Vencil took charge for the Warriors, earning the win after surrendering six hits and six runs, with six strikeouts over five innings. Despite Lakeside’s efforts, their starting pitcher Emily Mohney couldn’t contain the relentless Edgewood offense, ultimately taking the loss after giving up 16 runs on 17 hits.
The offensive dominance was reflected in Edgewood’s 17 hits throughout the game, with players like Luciano Paolillo and Makenna Rhodes joining Mckenna Vencil with three hits apiece. Natalie Ianetta and Avery Vencill also contributed multiple hits, while the team showcased patience at the plate, drawing five walks.
Defensively, the Warriors displayed their prowess by turning a crucial double play during the game, further solidifying their grip on the contest.
Although Lakeside fought valiantly, with players like Lucie Cole, Mariah Gildersleeve, Sophia Matriciano, Brooke DiBell, and Emily Mohney each contributing hits and RBIs, they ultimately couldn’t match the offensive firepower of the Edgewood Warriors.
Looking ahead, the Edgewood Warriors will carry their momentum into their next challenge as they hit the road to face West Geauga, aiming to continue their winning streak and build upon their impressive performance against Lakeside.  The Dragons will look to rebound as they take on Brush on Wednesday.
