WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 3) FEATURING BRITTAN ALLEN

The wrestling season is officially in full swing. Wrestlers have plenty of reps under their belts now. As another week has come and gone, we’ve seen more big wins, and big performances.  The top teams in the area were all in action, and all of them put up solid results. We welcomed in Gary Althiser back for another week of Wrestling Wednesdays to talk about the week that was, and preview the week that will be.

This week on Wrestling Wednesdays the boys were joined by Brittan Allen from Salem. Allen is one of the senior leaders for the impressive wrestling squad in Quaker country. Allen is coming off a big 4-0 weekend in United to not only win the 138 division, but also help the Quakers win the whole tournament.

Brittan has become an awesome leader for this program. He leads not just on the mat, but also off it helping build the future of wrestling in Salem.  He’s building the program by raising interest among the student body and bringing in more wrestlers to join the program. Any player that cares enough to recruit his classmates to fill his team’s roster proves not just a big leader in the team, but also a big leader in the school. Join Gary, Anthony, and Scotty as they hear from this impressive young man in Episode 3 of Wrestling Wednesdays.

BLUE JAYS PERFORM WELL IN MALVERN

The wrestling team got off to a strong start this weekend as they opened up their season at the Hornet Holiday Classic in Malvern, Oh. The tournament fields competition from 18 Division III schools from around the southern and northeast ohio areas.

The Jays finished 5th overall in the team race while landing an impressive 8 wrestlers on the podium. Of those 8 wrestlers, the Jays crowned two of their own individual champions. Senior Owen McDevitt and Sophomore Jayden Scott remain perfect on the season as they both climbed to the top of the podium in the 113# and 126# weight class.

Tournament Results:

Jayden Scott – 113# – 1st

Jack McDevitt – 120# – 2nd

Owen McDevitt – 126# – 1st

Lucas Sokol – 144# – 3rd

Colton Lynn – 165# – 5th

Gavin White – 215# – 2nd

The wrestlers will compete again next weekend as they travel north to Painsville, Oh to compete in a two-day tournament at the Riverside Rumble. Results can be followed on Baumspage.com. Congratulations and good luck wrestlers!

GO SHORTY, IT’S YOUR BIG DAY

CANFIELD, OH- When all the dust settles on those who live for signing days, and the bright lights of the attention dim; there remain those who are the blue-collar workers of the class.  The ones who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, punch the clock, and get to work.

There lies some of the best.  The ones that don’t necessarily crave attention, but live for the team and the mission a particular team strives to achieve.

In the famous words of Jay Z- “Allow me to reintroduce” you to Logan “Shorty” Cormell.  A young man who ties together the line in football is a point pacer on the mat and is a hit collector on the diamond.

Simply put, Cormell is a winner between the lines, and also outside them.

We caught up with Shorty following a baseball game to discuss some big news of his future plans, as well as talking about his experience as a Raider over the years.

All that and more in this edition of South Range Player Profile: GO SHORTY, IT’S YOUR BIG DAY

PRESENTED BY

RAIDER WORLD ORDER: SOUTH RANGE TAKES STATE

CANFIELD, OH- Saturday evening marked a historic event for South Range High School.  For only the second time in school history, a team captured a state championship in sports.  This time, it was the wrestling team who stunned all in attendance by holding the big trophy in Versailles.

Chris Colucci had the weight of the world on his shoulders in his match and needed a pin to finish the meet.

A pin is what he delivered, and led the celebration immediately following.

We caught up with the two gentlemen partially responsible for the championship wave the Raiders are riding: Michael Lally, and Chris Colucci, where we discussed the run up to the state duals, the legacy they’d like to leave, and what a win like this means for a program like theirs.

BEAVERS, TIGERS KEEP EYES ON THE PRIZE

WHEELING, WV- All wrestling eyes in the lower Ohio Valley are on Wheeling, West Virginia as one of the largest wrestling tournaments in the country is taking place.

The annual OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships is taking place and a usual suspect has multiple wrestlers advancing.  The Beaver Local Beavers and the Wellsville Tigers two of the area’s storied wrestling programs descended on West Banco Arena looking to continue their success on the local wrestling scene.

After the dust settled on the opening rounds the Beavers find themselves in first place in the Class 4A team standings at 114 points.  Wellsvile currently sits in seventh in the Class 1A/2A standings.  Beaver Local has four wrestlers and Wellsville sends a pair of young men looking for championship gold today .   The Beavers’ Jaymin Salsberry (13-1) 132-pound, Mark Emmerling Jr (15-2) 152-pound,  and Dorian Jackson (9-4) 145-pound, all three in great position on Saturday to claim titles for the Red and White.  Logan Ours (19-1) 160-pound looks to continue his dominance this season.  Ours has pinned all three of his opponents in less than 2 minutes total time during the tournament.  The Wyoming wrestling recruit is looking to become a three time OVAC champion.  Wellsville’s Mason Simms 106-pound and Tyler Stanley (11-4) 285-pound are looking to get the Tigers to the top of the podium today.

Championship action begins today with the Semifinal round beginning at 11am followed by the Finals slated for 4pm at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.
