KNIGHTS AVOID LATE SCARE TO BEAT WALSH JESUIT IN FRONT OF SELL OUT CROWD

AKRON, OH- The Archbishop Hoban Knights picked up win number one on their YSN debut, with a 58-55 victory over the Walsh Jesuit Warriors. The Knights had a steady lead throughout the ballgame, but a late fourth quarter push put the Warriors within one possession. Hoban was able to weather the storm down the stretch, and pick up a huge victory in front of a sell out crowd at Hoban High School.

The Knights defensive pressure gave the Warriors a lot of trouble in the first quarter, as Walsh Jesuit was only able to score eight points in an 18-8 Hoban lead after the first quarter. Hoban senior guard Logan Vowles was on fire, knocking down three triples out of the gate to score eleven of the teams first eighteen points. The Warriors and the Knights went back and forth in the second quarter as Walsh Jesuit’s top scorer Zach Halligan started to come alive with ten first half points. The Knights kept a steady lead in the second quarter, going into the locker room at halftime with a 30-21 advantage. Vowles kept the hot hand in the second quarter, dropping in two more three-pointers to score 17 first half points for the Knights.

In the third quarter, Archbishop Hoban’s top scorer Jonas Nichols got going with half of the Knights third quarter points scoring eight. Walsh Jesuit junior guard Tyler Bell and Halligan scored five points in the third quarter to keep the Warriors within striking distance down 46-38 heading into the final eight minutes of play. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors mounted a comeback with Bell knocking in some clutch shots down the stretch to put the Warriors within two possessions in the final minute. Zach Halligan drove to the basket down five points in the final ten seconds and got the bucket to fall plus the foul. The Warriors tried to throw it off the rim on the free throw toss to get one more possession, but Vowles got the basketball and dribbled it out to secure the Knights victory by a final of 58-55.

Archbishop Hoban was led by a trio of guards as Logan Vowles recorded a team high 19 points, while knocking down five three-pointers which puts him number two all time in Knights history with 169 three-pointers. Senior guard William Scott and junior Jonas Nichols both scored 13 points for the Knights. The Warriors got contributions from Tyler Bell who tied Vowles scoring 19 points, while Zach Halligan was right behind scoring 17 points. The Knights have now won eight consecutive home contests after the win over Walsh Jesuit, and will host Cleveland Central Catholic on Friday for Military Appreciation Night. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M.

Coach Davis took the time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to introduce us to their program. They talk about some of the big contributors to their team this season, what Hoban teaches their athletes off the court, and much more.  Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Pamela Davis.

HOBAN BREAKS THE DOORS DOWN

AKRON OH- Hoban sports one of the hardest schedules in the state of Ohio this season. So it hasn’t been too often they’ve been able to blast right through opponents. In fact, the last two wins that they’ve secured have been by a combined 5 points. That was not the case however on Thursday night as the Knights stormed their way to a 83-54 victory over Lutheran East.

Leading the Knights in scoring was Finley Kennedy who put in 25 points. She certainly wasn’t the only form of offense though as Mackenzie Edinburgh racked 16.  Senior Rylee Bennett was also in double figures with 10 points.

Hoban will get right back in to action on Saturday as they compete in the “Battle In The Hawk’s Nest” tournament at Bishop Hartley High School. The Knights will square off with Notre Dame Academy out of Kentucky at 4:15.
