RIVERA HITS THE RIGHT STROKE

BOARDMAN OH- It is never easy to step into a leadership role.  For Boardman, junior Sophia Rivera has done exactly that this golf season. She has embraced the role of captain that has been presented to her. She has brought a tremendous work ethic and energy to this Boardman team that has had an amazing season. She is always the one calling for extra practice. At the end of last season, she was the one that came to coach Christman and asked to schedule more 18 hole events to improve the Spartans stamina.  No one cares more about her teammates more than Rivera, and that loyalty shines through and brings the program together.  You could say Rivera acts as a glue for the golf program.

The results that Sophia has put up this season have been just as impressive as her leadership.  She had a successful summer winning a Greatest Golfer qualifier, and then hit the ground running when high school season got underway.  She ranks third in the AAC in their new point system to determine postseason awards. She has led the Spartans many times on their way to a 15-2 record. In sectionals, she shot an 82 to land the top spot on the team. That score would have been good enough to get Rivera to districts had the team not made the cut.

Sophia took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her season. She talks to Richie Juliano and Anthony Hartwig about the goals she set this year, her favorite club in her bag, and much more. Take time to check out the latest Boardman Golf Player Profile only on YSN.

BOARDMAN GIRLS GOLF COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH LEE CHRISTMAN

BOARDMAN OH- The Spartans have punched their ticket to districts. After an impressive showing and sectionals held at Old Avalon, the Spartans will test their skills at the next level. They won the fourth place spot over Stow Monroe Falls by one stroke. They also were just one stroke behind Solon at third place. The biggest win though for this Spartans team was beating out Canfield to get their place in districts. The Cardinals have been a thorn in Boardman’s side all year, and when it mattered most the Spartans pulled through. Boardman will compete in the district meet on October 13th at Brookledge Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls.

Boardman head coach Lee Christman was able to hop on YSN’s Running Point to talk about her team’s awesome performance.  She chatted with Richie Juliano and Anthony Hartwig about what it took to get the team to qualify, what her captains have brought to the table, and much more. RIVERA LEADS BOARDMAN TO DISTRICTS

WARREN OH- It was a tough field in the Monday’s division 1 sectional golf meet at Old Avalon golf course. With teams of the caliber of Hathaway Brisn, Solon, Canfield, Aurora, and more, Boardman had a tough task ahead if they wanted to earn a spot in sectionals.

Led by junior Sophia Rivera Boardman just grabbed the 4th spot as a team to qualify for districts.  The Spartans beat out Stow Monroe Falls by 1 stroke with a team score of 346.  Rivera shot an 82, which tied Jocelyn Zhao of Canfield for 10th in the sectional. It would have been good enough to advance to districts as an individual if Boardman didn’t finish in the top 4.  Zhao was able to advance to districts with her 82.  Emily Choleva shot a 85 for Boardman to be next on their leaderboard, Zoe Fick-Mills was right behind her with an 86.  Kate Pendleton added a score of 93 to Boardman, and rounding out their scoring was Haily Rusnak with a 110.

Boardman advances to the Division 1 District meet at Brookledge Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls on October 13th.  Canfield finished 7th as a team, Austintown Fitch finished 12th, Howland finished 14th, and Hubbard finished 16th.

GOSKE GIVES BOARDMAN EVERYTHING

BOARDMAN OH- Sometimes athletes come around a school system that just mean a lot to every team they play on. This year Boardman has one of those players in Cami Goske. Whether it be volleyball, basketball, or softball, Cami shows up big in the Spartans uniform. It is no  surprise to any of her coaches, one of the hallmarks to Goske’s game is her ability to be coached.

As far as volleyball goes, Goske has put in a lot of work to grow more and more into a dominant middle blocker for the Spartans.  She pointed out a lot of key elements to blocking she has worked to fine tune over her career.  She moves along the net extremely well, from pin to pin she can get anywhere. That is often a trouble point to middle blockers. It’s not easy to slide side to side and set up good blocks consistently, but Goske has mastered it.  On the season Goske has the blocking lead on the team by far with 42 on the year.  She also leads the team on offense with 89 kills to this point on the year.

Goske got a chance to catch up with Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about her senior campaign. They also talk about what coach Birch has brought to her game, her favorite thing about being a multiple sport athlete, and so much more. BOARDMAN GETS BEAT BY WALK OFF FIELD GOAL

BOARDMAN, OH- The Boardman Spartans came into week 7 looking for their fourth straight win as they hosted Warren Harding Friday night. A low scoring first half with both teams punching a touchdown in on the ground turned into a back and forth second half leading up to a spectacular finish. The Spartans raced out to a 7-0 lead early in the first with a Fernando Ortiz 63-yard run. Harding punched back with a 1-yard run to tie the game up at 7 going into half. The Raiders were the ones that raced out to a lead of their own after half with Ryan Powell putting one in from 12 yards out. That 13-7 lead would not last long as Boardman’s Tomas Andujar found Willy Torres for the score to go up 14-13. The Spartans got the ball back quickly after and Ortiz took one 75 yards to the house to put Boardman up 21-13 going into the fourth. In the final stanza, the Raiders took over and controlled the Spartans. Harding forced a Boardman punt and then took the ball 72 yards down the field to tie the game up once again at 21-21. That touchdown had some effect on Boardman as Raylin Weaver for Harding grabbed an interception, then the Raiders controlled the clock with their run game and Dalys Jett was able to push Harding all the way to Boardman’s 7 yard line with just a minute to go. That ultimately set up shop for junior kicker Jake Daugherty on a 17-yard, game winning kick. Daugherty easily split the uprights as time expired to give Warren Harding the victory over Boardman, 24-21.

For Boardman, Ortiz finished with 178 yards on 16 carries for 2 TDs. For Harding, Oryan Dukes finished with 81 yards on 12 carries. Jett added 101 yards on 20 carries and 2 TDs. Powell contributed 83 yards on 14 carries for a TD.

The Spartans will move to 4-3  on the season and will host Dover on Friday. The Raiders will move to 2-5 on the season and will host Mooney Friday night.

TIGERS HUNT DOWN BOARDMAN

HOWLAND OH- It was a cold and wet Monday evening in Howland as the Lady Tigers played host to the Boardman Lady Spartans. The Tigers got off to a quick start as Gracie Villwock snagged the first goal of the day within the first fifteen minutes of play. But from there it was a slow defensive battle for quite some time as neither team could get anything past midfield. Boardman in the middle of the first half was able to grab a goal thanks to a great run from Morgan Auck to even the contest back up. However, the Lady Tigers would quickly take another goal from Ava Yannucci to recapture the lead at the end of the first half. In the second half of play it was all Tigers, Kalliopi Liakaris would score the first goal and Villwock would take the second, which was also the second of the day for her.

The Howland Lady Tigers move to (6-4-1) on the season after they won 4-1. They will play host to the Fitch Falcons on Wednesday. Boardman drops to (3-7-1) and they will stay on the road on Wednesday as they travel to Canfield to take on the one-loss Lady Cardinals.

BOARDMAN OFFENSE BAFFLES BEARS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Boardman could do no wrong on offense, as their scheme left East looking around on Saturday afternoon. When the smoke cleared it was the Spartans on top 42-8.

It was advantage Boardman from the start as the Spartans went right down the field on their first drive. They capped it off with a 10 yard touchdown run by Willy Torres.  The next time the Spartans got the ball, lightning would strike fast.  Thomas Andujar found KeJaun Robinson for a 60 yard burst through the air.  There was no stopping the Spartans offense from that point on.

Biardman moves to 3-2 on the season and have a big test next week as they welcome in Benedictine.  East will also be at home in Week 6 as they host Mooney.
