SPARTANS WRECK RAIDERS WIN STREAK

CANFIELD, OH- The South Range Volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night with a 4 set loss to Boardman (21-25 14-25 25-22 18-25).

The first set started off back and forth but Boardman was always able to keep at least a one-point lead. Then the Spartans went on a long rally in the middle of the set to take a big enough lead to escape with a four-point win.

The Spartans completely controlled set number 2. They used their speed on the middle block to expose soft spots in the Raiders defense. The Spartans had all the momentum and cruised to a 2-0 match lead.

The Raiders showed tremendous toughness in set number three getting out to a big lead, and keeping it. They pushed to set point 24-17, but Boardman refused to go away. They rattled off 5 points in a row. The Raiders still took the set 25-22 but the Spartans grabbed much-needed momentum.

After dropping the third set Boardman came out in the fourth with intensity. A big 5-0 rally to put them up 13-8 was all they needed to control the clinching set. The Raiders struggled to hit in the set, with a percentage of .052.

Anna Primavera lead the Raiders in kills with 7 and added 3 digs. Izzy Lamparty was a walk at the net, grabbing 15 blocks, also having 5 kills and 2 digs. Emily Irons finished with 19 assists, 3 kills, and 3 digs. Reagan Irons lead the way defensively with 12 digs. Maria Primavera also had 8.

Raiders return to action Thursday night as they host Poland.

NAWR-WALK-OFF: BOARDMAN 12U TAKE DISTRICT CROWN ON GAME-WINNING SLAM

BOARDMAN, OH- It was easily one of the top ten games you’ll ever see in your lifetime.  Great pitching, outstanding defense, gutsy performances, high drama, and yes- a walk-off grand slam.  Oh, and by the way- these young men are only twelve.

The Boardman All-Stars went back and forth with Canfield for the entire game for the exception of one out to go.  The bases were loaded with no outs for Boardman in a 0-0 game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Canfield reliever, Drew Snyder was put into a tough situation.  He started the at-bat 3-0, and was in danger of walking in the winning run before striking out two consecutive batters to put Boardman back onto the ropes.

Then, Mason Nawrocki stepped to the dish.

“Mason was due, he was.  And he did a great job” said Boardman Manager, Dom Triveri.  Nawrocki stepped to the plate and took a fastball for a strike before delivering the biggest hit of his life.  Mason swung at the 0-1 fastball from Snyder and sent the ball majestically into the Boardman sky.  The left fielder raced toward the 200-foot fence but knew what the capacity crowd already discovered, Nawrocki had just sent his team to the next round as District 2 Champions in style: a walk-off grand slam.

A 4-0 victory sends Boardman to New Albany later this month to take on some of the state’s finest teams, but without a doubt, they may have already done that on a few special nights in July.  “Canfield’s a special team, they played a heck of a game.  Enzo Cocca pitched a heck of a game,” said Triveri.  Cocca was fantastic on the mound for Canfield, holding an explosive Boardman offense to no runs through 5 innings of work.

For Boardman, Ryan Neifer was a work-horse, plowing his way to 10 strikeouts and giving up no runs while picking up the victory.  “I just wanted to come in and get 10 strikeouts, so, I got my goal.  You’re always happy when you can get 10 K’s…my infield and outfield is amazing, I couldn’t ask for a better one,” said Neifer.

MANCINI LEADS THE WAY AS CANFIELD FORCES BOARDMAN TO ELIMINATION GAME

BOARDMAN, OH-  One swing is all it takes sometimes.  For Canfield, and for their standout, Dylan Mancini-great things happen in three’s.

In the third inning, Canfield 12U stud, Dylan Mancini took a pitch deep into left field and over the 200-foot marker for a three-run home run.  Mancini would add a triple (3-bagger) later on in the game to finish the game 2-3 and the Baird Brothers Most Valuable Player of the Game for YSN.

With an 8-2 victory over rival Boardman, the stage is set for a true Championship, winner takes all game Thursday at 7 pm.

Noah Anzevino started on the hill for Canfield and earned the win, while Aidan Radinsky appeared in relief and stymied Boardman bats.

The Boardman All-Stars started Anthony Triveri on the hill, followed by Ty Kirlik and Dom Polkovich.

YSN will have exclusive coverage of the 12U Championship beginning at 6:55 Thursday Night.

BOARDMAN TAKES 11U DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT FROM POLAND

BOARDMAN, OH- All eyes were on the Field of Dreams in Boardman on Wednesday, and rightfully so with what was about to transpire.

After starting out on fire and to the tune of a 10-1 lead, Boardman had to battle some adversity late in the ballgame against Poland’s finest.  The Poland 11U All-Stars could have easily rolled over and let their opponents finish their season without a fight, but that was hardly the case.  In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Boardman took an 8-0 lead through the first two innings courtesy of offensive power from Anthony Groner and Collin Resetar.  Groner also started the game on the hill for the Boardman All-Stars.

Dylan Kelty was the tough-luck loser of the ball game for Poland and was backed up in relief by Owen McKenzie.

Poland scored 8 unanswered runs to bring the game within one run in the final frame, but couldn’t find the magic tying run, and fall to the final of 10-9.

With the victory, Boardman moves on to play in Cambridge for the State Tournament that begins July 27th.
