POLAND SURVIVES OVERTIME THRILLER TO MOVE ON

BOARDMAN, OH – During tournament play it is hard to stay calm under the pressure, but when you have to go into sudden death OT, it becomes a different animal to handle. For Poland and Chardon, who matched up in the Division II District Semifinal, they had to face the nerves of OT in the playoffs. For the Bulldogs, it came down to hitting the little shots that matter.

For Senior Ross Dedo, those little shots, like free throws, were going to be the deciding factor. Dedo went 10-14 at the charity stripe, helping him get a career-high in points. As the game went on, you were able to see where this game was headed with both teams trading blows. Towards the end of regulation, Poland had a 64-58 lead and was hoping that their defense could hold off the late attack from the Hilltoppers. Luckily for Chardon, a late three that was followed up by a forced turnover led to a buzzer-beater to send it to OT. Although the overtime period started out slow, blows were traded again. Chardon tied the game at 67 with just a little over a minute left, which led to the game deciding play for the Bulldogs. Senior Christian Colosimo hit a huge three with 40 seconds remaining to put them up once again. That would eventually lead to foul shots that gave some breathing room for Poland to hold onto a thrilling win, 73-67.

 

For Poland, Dedo led the Bulldogs with 37 points. Colosimo added 19 on the night for the Bulldogs.

 

For Chardon, Nathannel Sulka led the way with 19 points. Josh Bruce finished with 18 on the night.

 

With the win over Chardon, Poland will advance onto the Division II District Championship on Saturday as they will take on the winner of Chaney/Chagrin Falls. Don’t miss it on YSN!

TIGERS LEAVE NO DOUBT IN SECTIONAL FINAL

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- All season long Springfield head coach Jeff Brink has been preaching “one step at a time.” On Friday, the step in front of them was East Palestine. The Tigers took that step with ease as they cruised to a big 77-31 victory over the Bulldogs.

Seandelle Gardner was terrific for the Tigers leading the way with 18 points. He wasn’t the only one in double figures. He was joined by Beau Brungard, and Alex Rothwell both scored 15 points. Adam Wharry added 7 points to the Tigers cause. They got 11 players in the stat book.

Tyler Bistarkey led the Bulldogs by getting in double figures with 10 points. Caleb Reynolds added 7.

With the win, Springfield advances to the district semifinals against Garrettsville Garfield. The Tigers will take on the eighth seeded G-Men on Monday at Salem high school. Tip is set at 7:00.

STRONG FINISH PROPELS WARRIORS TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

UNIONTOWN OH- Familiar does net up on Wednesday to decide who would punch their ticket to the district championship. West Branch and Poland have met 8 times out of the last 10 seasons in the tournament. There are no secrets. West Branch was able to finish strong and win the final frame by six points and Take home a 51-40 win.

The game started out back and forth, both teams getting plenty of contribution from the post. With the score tied 10-10 after one quarter, West Branch made mighty push in the second quarter to take a 26-19 lead into the locker room. Anna Lippiatt caught fire in the frame scoring 7 points in the second alone.

Poland hit 3 threes in the 3rd quarter to stay in striking distance and only trail 35-30 after the third. They’d make it 35-32 in the first moments of the final frame, but West Branch flexed their muscles. They scored 16 points in the fourth to keep Poland at bay.

Lippiatt led the way for the Warriors with a tremendous 21 points. Sophie Gregory was also in double figures with 12.

Poland was paced by Mary Brant who finished in double figures with 12 points. Katie McDonald added 8 points, and Sarah Forsythe put in 7.

West Branch advances to the district championship where they’ll matchup with Marlington for the third time this season. The two teams split their regular season matchups. Tip off is set for 7:00 at Lake High School.

Poland ends their season as NE8 championships for the 4th straight season. Their final record is 19-5 (13-1)

NO LYING, ELIA IS READY FOR STATE

POLAND OH- In diving, all the hard work put in during the season can come down a few 2 second dives that decide whether or not you go to state. For second year diver Dominic Elia, he never lets that pressure get to him. No merges, no overthinking, Dominic just dives. He dives pretty well too. Elia scored a 276.05 to finish 10th out of 24 divers in districts to advance to state. The cut off was the top 16.

Dominic has been embraced by the older divers on the team and has meshed right into the family atmosphere the team brings. He gets along with everyone on the team. The bonding they bring, is the hallmark of their success in the pool.

OHLIN SETS HER SIGHTS ON STATE

POLAND OH- It’s been a quality season for the diving team at Poland. Sydney Ohlin is just one of four divers that represents the Bulldogs who qualified for state after her performance at districts. Sydney scored a 343.60 to advance to state. That was good enough for 4th place in districts. This will be her first trip to state and she looks to make the most of it.

Sydney points out how tight knit this diving team is at Poland. When you spend two hours a day, six days a week with the same group of four people working hard at your goals, you tend to build a bond. The team lifts each other  up, and even at times helps coach each other on things they’re struggling with.

Sydney took the time to join YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her journey into diving. She talks with Ty Bartell, and Anthony Hartwig about how she fell in love with the sport of diving, her goals in the state meet, and so much more. NIGH MAKES DIVING A SCIENCE

POLAND OH- Kendall Nigh is state bound for the second year in a row. The Poland diving standout has put together a masterful season breaking multiple school records in the process of punching her ticket to state. Kendall qualified for state with a score of 408.90 which ranked her 3rd in the D2 girls diving district meet.

Kendall not only gets it done in the pool, but also puts in the work in the classroom. She is on track to be one of her classes valedictorians as she continues to masterfully balance school work, and diving. Those organization tools when come in handy in her future as she plans on continuing her diving career at Duquesne University.

BULLDOGS ADVANCE PAST MOONEY INTO DISTRICTS

POLAND OH- It was pretty apparent that Saturday’s matchup between Mooney and Poland was going to be a defensive battle. Both teams came in statistically some of the best defenses in the YSN family. The defenses didn’t disappoint the hype, as both teams made a plethora of great defensive plays. It was Poland however that found a way to score enough to advance past Mooney with a 42-34 win.

Poland’s first quarter set the tone for the game. It was by far their most productive frame of the game. They jumped out to a 16-8 lead after 1. Katie McDonald was a problem in that frame scoring all 6 of her points in the first. Poland’s defense did the rest as the closest Mooney got the rest of the way was 3.

Abby Farber led the Bulldogs with 14 points on the night. Fellow seniors Connie Cougras was right behind her with 12 points.

Mooney senior Alaina Scavina did everything she  could for her team. She scored 14 points to lead the way. Sophia Diorio scored 8.

Poland advances to the district semifinal where they’ll meet up with West Branch. That game will take place on Wednesday at Uniontown Lake. Tip off is set at 7:30.

BIG SHOT FARBER

POLAND OH- Abby Farber has become Poland’s shining image of work ethic. From the day she stepped into the gym as a freshman, to now there has never been a day you could find someone who works harder than Abby Farber. She is one of the best examples of why Poland’s program is so successful. She understands, accepts, and executes her role on the team.

The harsh reality of life is sometimes hard work doesn’t equal the results you look for. For Abby, her work has put her in a position to be a a strong leader, and play valuable minutes on the varsity floor. But she doesn’t take it for granted. She knows that just because she’s gotten to this point is no reason to let up her attention to detail. Abby understands that she’s blessed that her hard work has shown results.

Abby has been coined “Big Shot Farber” this season because on multiple occasions throughout the season she has confidently knocked down some of the biggest shots of the game. Whether it be a three that ends another team’s run, or a steal and layup that fires up the crowd, you can always count on Abby to make the big plays.

POLAND GETS PAST LAKEVIEW TO ADVANCE

POLAND OH- The Poland Bulldogs began their quest for back to back district championships on Wednesday night. They opened their tournament run with a very familiar foe. They’d have to beat Lakeview for the 3rd time of the season to advance. Poland did just that as they advanced with a 42-23 win.

Poland was led by Katie McDonald who finished with 13 points. Morgan Kluchar was right behind her to talking 12 points. Mary Brant contributed 7 points to the Bulldogs cause as well.

Teagan Pierce, and Maggie Pavlansky both scored 8 points to pace Lakeview.

Poland advances to the sectional final where they will host Mooney on Saturday. Tip off is set for 1:00.

COWBOYS HAVE ENOUGH TO GET PAST POLAND

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Coming into the night, the Poland Bulldogs (14-7)held a 8-1 series lead over the Chaney Cowboys (14-7) since 2006, with the Cowboys first victory coming over the Bulldogs in last year’s district final. While Chaney controlled from the start of last season’s matchup, Poland came into the night looking to make things closer this time around.

Both teams got off to a good start from beyond the arc in the first quarter, sinking a combined five shots from deep, shooting 56% from three. While this matchup saw hot starts from long range, the same success did not carry over to the charity stripe, going 1-4 from the line.

A hard fought first quarter saw Chaney hold a four-point lead heading into the second, that would later by expanded all the way to nine with under three minutes to play in the half. Looking to close the gap before break, Poland star’s Colosimoand Dedo combined for the last seven points of the half, bringing the Dawgs within a score.

While Poland brought the intensity to end our first half of play, the Bulldogs were not able to carry it over to start the third. Chaney jumped on Poland to expand their lead out to nine once again, thanks to a 7-0 run courtesy of freshman, Matthew Jones.

The Bulldogs would end the third trailing by five but would be outscored fourteen to eight in the final period. Clive Wilson led the way for Chaney in the fourth with six, giving the Cowboys their second straight victory over Poland, 57-46.

CHANEY:

Clive Wilson – 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks

Josiah Gonzalez – 11 points, 3 assists

Matt Jones – 8 points, 4 rebounds

POLAND:

Ross Dedo – 20 points, 5 rebounds,

Christian Colosimo – 13 points, 3 rebounds

Chaney – Now winners of their third straight, the Chaney Cowboys will travel West to take on the Vikings of North Canton Hoover (15-5). Hoover is a perennial powerhouse in the boys’ basketballscene and will provide a tough road test for the Showtime Cowboys, tomorrow, the 16th.

Poland – Dropping back-to-back games for the first time since mid-December, the Bulldogs will return home with a chance of revenge against thehated Canfield Cardinals (9-11). The Battle of 224 will return Friday night at 7:00 pm.
