SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 12) WITH DAN YEAGLEY

Week 11, the first week of the 2019 OHSAA football playoffs, saw Coach Dan Yeagley and the South Range Raiders offense start off slower than we have seen all year, as they trailed Bellaire 7-2 going into the half. The second half, however, was a completely different story as the Raiders rattled off 28 unanswered points in route to a 30-7 victory. Week 12 or Round Two, however you might be keeping track at home, will send South Range on the road to take on the #1 seed, the Kirtland Hornets, in Niles at Bo Rein Stadium on Saturday night.

The pride of YSN, D.J. Yokley, sat down with Coach Yeagley this past week to talk about the big first-round win, what his outlook is moving into their second-round match up with perennial powerhouse Kirtland, and also what the Raiders need to accomplish to move on to Round 3.

CANNONBALL COMING; RAIDERS MAKE SPLASH IN SECOND HALF TO BEAT BELLAIRE

CANFIELD, OH – On a cold November night, it took a while to get the motor running for South Range, but like a dependable ride-once the motor heated up, the Raider offense was a well-oiled machine.  Down 7-2 at halftime, South Range scored 28 unanswered in the second half to move on in the OHSAA Playoffs.

Bellaire struck first on the first drive of the game with a five-yard touchdown run. Their drive took nearly seven minutes off the first-quarter clock. Both teams then continued the defensive battle in the second quarter as the halftime score was, 7-2, in Bellaire’s favor. The second half was a completely different game for the Raiders as they came out firing on all cylinders. Michael Patrone then hit Trey Pancake on a 49-yard touchdown pass, making the score 16-7 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was all Raiders as Patrone hit Dylan Dominguez on a 31-yard touchdown strike. Dominguez closed out the night with a 38-yard touchdown run, as the Raiders won tonight, 30-7.

South Range was led through the air by Michael Patrone with 14 completions on 22 attempts for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns. NAWR-WALK-OFF: BOARDMAN 12U TAKE DISTRICT CROWN ON GAME-WINNING SLAM

BOARDMAN, OH- It was easily one of the top ten games you’ll ever see in your lifetime.  Great pitching, outstanding defense, gutsy performances, high drama, and yes- a walk-off grand slam.  Oh, and by the way- these young men are only twelve.

The Boardman All-Stars went back and forth with Canfield for the entire game for the exception of one out to go.  The bases were loaded with no outs for Boardman in a 0-0 game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Canfield reliever, Drew Snyder was put into a tough situation.  He started the at-bat 3-0, and was in danger of walking in the winning run before striking out two consecutive batters to put Boardman back onto the ropes.

Then, Mason Nawrocki stepped to the dish.

“Mason was due, he was.  And he did a great job” said Boardman Manager, Dom Triveri.  Nawrocki stepped to the plate and took a fastball for a strike before delivering the biggest hit of his life.  Mason swung at the 0-1 fastball from Snyder and sent the ball majestically into the Boardman sky.  The left fielder raced toward the 200-foot fence but knew what the capacity crowd already discovered, Nawrocki had just sent his team to the next round as District 2 Champions in style: a walk-off grand slam.

A 4-0 victory sends Boardman to New Albany later this month to take on some of the state’s finest teams, but without a doubt, they may have already done that on a few special nights in July.  “Canfield’s a special team, they played a heck of a game.  Enzo Cocca pitched a heck of a game,” said Triveri.  Cocca was fantastic on the mound for Canfield, holding an explosive Boardman offense to no runs through 5 innings of work.

For Boardman, Ryan Neifer was a work-horse, plowing his way to 10 strikeouts and giving up no runs while picking up the victory.  “I just wanted to come in and get 10 strikeouts, so, I got my goal.  You’re always happy when you can get 10 K’s…my infield and outfield is amazing, I couldn’t ask for a better one,” said Neifer.
