GARFIELD OVERCOMES SLOW START

GARRETTSVILLE OH- The first half didn’t go quite as planned on Saturday night for Garfield. In a steady rain the G-Men found themselves down 13-7 at halftime. It would take almost the whole 3rd quarter for the G-Men to retake the lead. A touchdown and extra point gave them a 14-13 lead at the end of the 3rd. After the G-Men wore down Sandy Valley scoring two more times in the final frame to come away with a 28-13 win. Garfield ran 35 plays in the second half compared to Sandy Valley’s 16. The G-Men used that advantage to out gain them 182 to 17 in the half.

The G-Men advance to the next round of the OHSAA playoffs to play Bellaire who beat Crestview 27-20. That game will be at Garfield Saturday at 7:00.

THE DEMMA DOZER

GARRETTSVILE OH- The Gsrfield football team is one of those special small-town programs that just does things the right way. As far as their offense goes, some call them old-fashioned, some call them one-dimensional, we like to call them unstoppable. It takes some ridiculous skill to put the numbers they do when everyone on the field knows what is coming. One of their biggest production players is Anthony Demma.

Anthony has definitely left a mark on the program. He’s already become the program’s leader in career points, and in Week 10 he broke the record for yards in a season. In a program that has historically been great as Garfield, those records are impressive. Now, it’s playoff time and Demma and his teammates are gearing up for a big playoff run inside a monster Division 5 Region 17. But with Demma in the backfield, and his line up front, Garfield might be the one causing nightmares for their opponents.

Anthony was able to take the time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about his season, and teammates. They discuss what makes Garfield special, breaking the season yards record, and much more. Don’t miss this Garfield player profile “The Demma Dozer”

AUSTINTOWN, OH- Mike Moser checks in with YSN following the release of the 2021 OHSAA Playoff Bracket.

GARFIELD HOLDS OFF WARRIORS PUSHBACK

BROOKFIELD, OHIO. The Brookfield Warriors took on the visiting Garrettsville Garfield G-Men as this one looked to be over early for the Brookfield Warriors as they fell 24-0 at halftime as star runningback Anthony Demma showed off his speed coring a couple of touchdowns including one on the first play of scrimmage to put the G-Men up 7 to 0.

Demma’s performance in the first half was also good enough to break the career rushing yard record at Garrettsville Garfield.

The second half was a different story though as the Warriors climbed back into it. They were led by star quarterback Donovan Pawlowski as he broke off for a big touchdown run to pull brookfield within two scores but the strong G-Men defense held them the rest of the way and a late touchdown pulled the G-Men away late in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Jones,

the star wideout for brookfield did managed to pull one in for a big touchdown score but it was not enough as the Warriors fall 31 to 17 to the G-Men.

CRESTVIEW MAKES IT BACK TO BACK IN MVAC

COLUMBIANA OH- Crestview has been in three different leagues since 2016, and they’ve dominated every single one of them. On Tuesday with a sweep over Garfield, Crestview secured their second MVAC championship in a row. However, a dig further into the past will show you that they’ve won 6 straight conference championships. Ranging from the ITCL, to the AAC, to now the first two seasons in the MVAC, the Rebels have planted their flag. (25-10 25-11 25-18)

Abbey Emch led the offense this time around with 14 kills, and played good defense with 4 blocks. Lucy Montgomery finished with 7 kills, and 13 assists. Grace Auer secured a double double with 19 assists, and 10 digs. She also had 6 kills.

Crestview returns to action Wednesday as they travel to LaBrae. Garfield is back to the court on Thursday as they travel to Brookfield.

CRESTVIEW STAYS ATOP MVAC

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Coming in to Tuesday night, Crestview was on a 52 game conference winning streak dating back to their days in the ITCL in 2016. Newcomers to the MVAC Garfield wanted to have something to say about that. The Lady G-Men came into the night matching Crestview’s undefeated record. Crestview however was way too much for Garfield on this night. They swept the Lady G-Men in straight sets. (25-14 25-13 25-22)

Lucy Montgomery led the attack on the night finishing with 12 kills. She also racked up 7 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 aces. Grace Auer finished the game leading the team in digs with 10. She also finished with 8 assists, and 8 kills. Abbey Emch continued to cause problems at the net. She blocked 4 balls, and got 5 kills.

Both teams return to MVAC action on Tuesday as Crestview hits the road to Champion, and Garfield will travel to Campbell.

Postgame Interview With Lucy Montgomery:

LABRAE CANT HOLD UP AGAINST G MEN

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Garfield was given the opportunity to send an early message to the MVAC facing undefeated LaBrae. The message was emphatically sent as the G-Men wore the Vikings down on their way to a 35-14 win.

Anthony Demma continued to rumble his way through opposing defenses. He carried the ball 23 times and gained 191 yards.

Garfield’s defense came up big in the moments that really mattered. After the Vikings ran a kick 65 yards to the house to close out the first half, the G-Men defense didn’t let them score again. It wasn’t for a lack of opportunities though, Garfield turned the ball over on their first two possessions of the second half. But the Garfield defense responded forcing a turnover on downs both times the Vikings got the ball.

Garfield continues their debut tour through the MVAC in Week 5 hosting Newton Falls. LaBrae will need to bounce back as they will face off with Champion on Friday.
