BEAVERS DISMANTLE SKINS IN NEW TURF REVEAL

INDIAN CREEK OH-

The Beavers had nothing short of a perfect night, as they were able to debut their new turf field under all the lights, and they didn’t disappoint at all winning 49-0 against the Indian Creek Redskins.

The Beavers started with a defensive stop, allowing one first down to Creek in the first drive. They got the ball at the IC 32 to start their first drive, and tokk 3 plays to punch it in on a 15 yard TD pass from Tanner Johnston to Caleb White. The defense then shut down the Creek offense, getting 2 three and outs in a row, setting up 2 quick touchdowns. One a 37 yard TD pass from Johnston to Dylan Moore, the other a 40 yard TD run by Johnston, who took home our G. Burbick Farms player of the game honors.

Up 21-0 with just 49 seconds left in the first, Tommy Warrick made the rare defensive lineman interception and made the most of it, taking it to the house for a pick six. After one quarter, the score was 28-0, and things didn’t stop there. After a couple first downs, Creek punted the ball away, and the Beavers made another long house call. This time, it was senior RB Devin Salsberry, playing in his first game of the season due to injury, took it 45 yards to the end zone. To cap off the first half scoring, Logan Krulik got himself a pick six from 43 yards out to make it 42-0, the score at halftime.

One analogy I would use to describe the first half would be Ohio State playing Maryland or Rutgers last year. Joe Monte mad a 36 yard TD run in the second half, and that was it for scoring, as the Beavers opened up the new turf field at Pastore Field with a HUGE victory over the Indian Creek Redskins, the first time the Beavers had beat the Skins in over 7 years, and the first win over Andrew Conner’s team in Coach Mike McKenzie’s career

The Beavers will host the Minerva Lions next Friday on YSN Beaver Local.

MATT’S WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Key players can make the difference in a team, and that is exactly what senior Matthew Reardon is doing after him and his family left Canton McKinley to move back to help Ursuline win again.  With him at Ursuline, there seems to be much greater leadership, something that the Irish were struggling with for a few years.  In 2019, Reardon caught 28 passes for 448 yards and seven touchdowns.  He also threw for 642 yards passing and five touchdowns on the season.  That same year, he broke Paul Kempe’s record against Bishop Watterson in week seven throwing for 351 yards and three touchdowns.  At season’s end, Matthew would be named third team All-Ohio and All NEO-Inland District.

In March after taking time to decide on where he wanted to play college football.  He announced that he would commit to the Miami (OH) RedHawks, because of how it fits him as a receiver.  He chose Miami over schools like Toledo, Princeton, Bowling Green, Army, Air Force and the hometown Youngstown State Penguins.

On this episode of the player profile, Matthew talks about what the team has to do better in week three against Boardman that they struggled with against Austintown Fitch, what his major wants to be when he gets to Miami along with why he wanted to play for them, the meaning behind his jersey number being eight, and how much it means to him to play under his dad and three-time state champion coach Dan Reardon, plus more.

Ursuline (1-1) heads to Boardman stadium on Friday to face off against the Boardman Spartans (1-1) this Friday at 7pm.  It can be streamed on YSN Live.

It was all South Range to start. The Indians could do nothing to slow down the mighty rushing attack of the Raiders. They quickly jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead. Girard would fight back in the third however, and score 15 unanswered points to make it 28-21. After trading touchdowns, the Raiders once again locked down the Indians offense, and they cruised to a 56-28 victory.

Dylan Dominguez ran the ship for the Raiders gaining 117 yards on 18 carries. Mike Patrone only played a half, but he threw for 95 yards and 2TDs.

TIGERS PROVE TOO MUCH FOR WESTERN RESERVE

BERLIN CENTER OH- The Springfield Tigers has to grind through a slow start to eventually cruise to a 31-0 victory over Western Reserve on Friday night.

Western Reserve’s first drive are up 10 minutes of clock. But the Devils couldn’t finish the drive as it stalled in  Springfield territory. After the Tigers went up 3-0, the Devils had another opportunity. With the ball inside the ten, the Tigers defense stiffened up and held the Devils scoreless. That would end up being Western Reserve’s Final opportunity to be competitive as the Tigers scored the next 28 points and won 31-0.

Beau Brungard led the Tigers offensive attack on the ground with 6 rushes for 80 yards and 2 TDs. Through the air he went 9/13 for 182 yards. Clayton Nezbeth tumbled into the endzone twice.

David Altiere tan hard for the Devils. On 26 rushes, he ran for 108 yards. That’s an average of 4.2 yards a carry.

Springfield finally gets a home game next Friday as they host McDonald. Western Reserve will have to regroup on the road as they travel to Mineral Ridge.

BEAVERS MAKE LONG TRIP WORTH IT

BARNSVILLE OH-The Beavers took the hour and a half long road trip to Barnesville to take on the Shamrocks in hopes of winning their first game of the season, and they did just that.

Things started out slow for the Beavers, as they went down 9-0 after a TD and FG from the Shamrocks in the first quarter. The Beavers got themselves on the board with a 3 yard TD run from Caleb White to make it 9-7. Barnesville had an immediate answer 2 plays later with a 60-yard touchdown to Gage Hannahs, who found himself wide open, uncovered by the Beavers defense, to go up 15-7.

After some defensive stops by both teams, Beaver Local got the ball down 8 with 1:44 left in the first half. They pulled off the 2-minute drill to score before the half lead by senior QB Tanner Johnston, who connected with Logan Krulik for the 6, and then connected with Caleb White for the 2-point conversion, tying the game before the half.

The Beavers got the ball coming out of the half, and they made the most of it. They marched 54 yards down the field after getting great starting field position and scored in under 4 minutes. The drive ended with a Caleb White 2 yard TD run. The Beavers defense put up a brick wall from the 3rd quarter on, as Barnesville barely made it into plus territory in the second half. Tanner Johnston connected with Dylan Moore on the following drive for an instant impact 54-yard touchdown which was the first nail in the coffin for the Shamrocks. The final nail came in the form of a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior TE Nate Sprouse, making it 36-15, which would end up being the final score, as the Beavers get themselves up to .500.

They will debut their new turf next week in a Thursday matchup with Indian Creek. Kickoff at 7, pregame at 6:30 on YSN Beaver Local.

HUBBARD HOLDS TIGHT SURVIVES FALCONS RALLY

JEFFERSON OH- After blocking Kyle Walker’s punt with a little over 1 minute and 20 seconds to go, the Jefferson Falcons took over at the Eagles 5-yard line, trailing by just 5. For a senior class that only has a total of 2 wins throughout their 3 years, they were just 5 yards away from defeating a team who has beaten up on their program for the last 10 years.

After a Bruckman carry for 0 and a Hitchcock QB draw for only 2, the Falcons had 3rd and goal from the 3. Hitchcock dropped back and fired one over to his wideout that already reached pay dirt once this quarter, Trenton Hodge, but Hubbard defensive lineman Donnie Cheffo got a hand in the passing lane and was able to knock it down.

4th and goal, 3 yards to go. Hubbard looking to extend their winning streak to 6 over the Falcons, Jefferson seeking just their 3rd victory in 4 years. With everything on the line last night, Jefferson went back to the slant that worked all game long. But this time, to no avail. A screaming backer, Evan Jarvis, was able to put pressure on the young quarterback and forced him to make a bad throw behind his open receiver.

Hubbard: The Eagles will play host to the Lakeview Bulldogs (0-2). Of the last 5 matchups, Hubbard was won 3 games by an average margin of 33 points, while Lakeview’s two wins have come at an average of just a little over 4 points.

Jefferson:  The Falcons will hit the road and travel south to take on the Struthers Wildcats (1-1). With their loss tonight, the Falcons have lost 22 straight conference games in a row.

BEARS OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT AND PREVAIL

CAMPBELL OH – Valley Christian Eagles have a home game at Campbell Memorial high school as they take on the Leetonia Bears. As both teams come into tonight’s contest (1-0).

Both defenses started off strong as the Eagles would force a fumble and recover it inside Leetonia’s 15-yard line. Eagles running back, Cameron Davenport would take advantage of the Bears turnover and rush for his first touchdown of the night to take the lead 7-0. Leetonia’s next drive they would fumble once again inside the 20-yard line. Davenport would rush into the endzone for his second touchdown to extend their lead 14-0. Leetonia would then answer back later in the 2nd quarter with a Jacob McCool 1-yard rush touchdown and a Marco Ferry 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to 14-8 to end the half.

Coming out of halftime Leetonia would get an onside kick and drive down the field as McCool would score his second touchdown and Ferry with his second 2-point conversion to take their first lead 16-14. Leetonia would kickoff to the Eagles after the score and would strip the ball out and force a turnover. With great field position, the Bears would run the ball down into the red zone as Marco Ferry would rush for his first touchdown and then converting a 2-point conversion to give Leetonia a lead of 24-14. Valley Christian would not be able to get past Leetonia’s strong defense the rest of the game as Leetonia’s Dylan Durick would have two sacks and a fumble recovery to during the game is a key factor in stopping the Eagles offense. As the 4th quarter started Leetonia would get into the endzone for the final time with McCool’s third rushing touchdown and giving Leetonia a victory in a 32-14 game.

Leetonia would advance to (2-0) and take on Lisbon at home next week. Valley Christian will fall to (1-1) as they will travel to Columbiana to take on the Clippers.
