CANFIELD STRUGGLES AGAINST WESTLAKE
By Matt Maher
NORTH OLMSTED, OH – HOCKEY IS BACK on YSN as the Canfield Cardinals took on the Westlake Demons for YSNs first and Canfields 3rd game of the season!
The tilt between these two conference foes started off with an oddity as Westlake opted to start the game with a third defenseman over their regular starting goalie. While the net had less protection, Westlake played good defense and kept Canfield from capitalizing early. While Max Weelock wouldn’t show up for a few minutes, JJ Boris was in his crease ready to go at puck drop and he got comfortable quickly making some fantastic stops and keeping his team in it.
Both teams would go half the period without scoring but with 7:47 Westlake broke the silence with a tally by Luke Hyland. The Demons would double their lead about two minutes later with Seth Schons’ first of the night. Canfield would stay on top of them though and with 1:37 still to go, Connor Cattaneo found the back of the net and put his team right back in it to end the first period.
Westlake would start the second period showing some command and would spend a notable amount of time on Canfields end of the ice for the rest of the game. The Demons took about 4 minutes before answering Cattaneo and Schons would beat Boris to get his brace. Westlake would continue their attack and keep Canfield on their heels and with 4:15 to play, Schons would score his hat-trick goal. The Demons added one more about two minutes later from Stephen Baker.
Canfield came out angry to start the third period and showed a burst of energy and command for the first 30 seconds but Westlake would not be stopped and with 33 seconds played in the 3rd it was Schons to add his 4th goal of the night and keep the good times rolling for his team. Anthony Vlach would find his first of the evening about two minutes later and then would add another off of a lucky deflection off a defenders skate with 7:25 to go. Luke Hyland would cap off the game with a bullet of a shot that ripped past JJ and found the back of the net.
The Cardinals found themselves tired after a close overtime loss last night to Mayfield and a well rested Westlake team took advantage on home ice and won 9-1. Canfield will look for win number one on December 7th when they get their much anticipated rematch against Mayfield for their home opener, puck drop is set for 5:15PM.
