CANFIELD IMPRESSES IN SEASON OPENER

CANFIELD OH- Canfield has been widely known as one of the premiere girls soccer teams in the area, and if there was any doubt that that would continue in 2021 the Cardinals put them quickly to bed. In a matchup with another very successful program in South Range, Canfield went on the road and dominated. They ran away with a 4-0 victory. The Cardinals outshot the Raiders 16-2.

Sabrina Goodrich was a force on the field scoring 2 goals. Ali Malinky and Lauren Yahman both added goals for the Cardinals.

Both teams have eleven days off before returning to action. Canfield will have their home opener against Berea Midpark on August 25th. On the same night South Range will travel to Niles.

SALEM SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MIKE BAILEY

SALEM OH- You can imagine how much time is sacrificed to head coach a high school athletics team. Now imagine you’re coaching two. That is a task that Salem soccer coach Mike Bailey has not shied away from. He is now the head coach of both the boys and girls programs. Salem has a unique set up where him, and two other coaches handle both teams together. The chemistry and dynamic between the three men is a big reason why it works. The Salem girls open the season this year on August 13th as part of the OHSAA’s “Friday night Futball” initiative. They will travel to United. The boys will travel to United as well opening the season on August 21st.

Mike was able to stop by in studio to visit YSN’s Running Point. He gave us an inside look at how this tri coach set up is going to work with Salem’s soccer teams. He chatted with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the programs culture, what got him started in soccer, and much more. It’s the start of something new in Salem and we couldn’t be more proud to shine a light on them, check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Mike Bailey.

BOARDMAN BOYS SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH ERIC SIMIONE

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman boys soccer coach Eric Simione is the definition of a lifer. He is in his 31st year of coaching something at Boardman High School, and his 20th with the boys soccer program. Soccer has grown so much since he started, and his program has reflected that. The Spartans are coming off a positive 2020 where they featured 6 All-District level players. They are returning 4 of those players this season. The Spartans are full of leaders, and fully expect to put their best foot forward in 2021, especially with a summer that is back to normal.

Coach Simione was kind enough to give some of his time to YSN’s Running Point to talk about his team. He shares with Anthony Hartwig the growth of soccer in the community, the development of the youth in the sport, and so much more. Spartan fans don’t miss this exclusive discussion with coach Simione.

RIDGE SCORCHES PAST VIKINGS

ATWATER OH- The Rams traveled to Atwater tonight to face the Waterloo Vikings.

The Rams controlled possession and play for most of the game. Rams’ center mid Audri Gaydosh would setup Ethan Smallsreed with a nice through pass for the opening goal just a minute and a half into the game. 6 minutes later Nate Colburn would find Smallsreed for goal #2. With 9 minutes remaining in the 1st half, Rams’ center back Brayden Lowe would play a long ball over the top. Seth Steward would beat the Vikings Keeper to the ball for goal #3. With 5 minutes remaining Ethan Smallsreed would cross the ball to the backside of goal for a waiting Emma Prusky who would score goal #4. Rams’ Keeper Landon Pal would have 2 saves in the 1st half.

The 2nd half would be a bit disjointed as younger players got some field time but the Rams would still control the majority of play and keep the Vikings off the score sheet. With 30 seconds left in the game, the Vikings Keeper would play a short pass from a goal kick to his outside back. Branden Testa, playing left wing for the Rams, would pressure the ball and win it. His quick strike would give the Rams a total of 5 goals. The Rams’ back line led by Seniors Isaiah Kelly, Brayden Lowe, Talia Clarke and Bella Maglis would prove strong enough to withstand the few Viking attacks and secure the Rams a shutout. The Rams defeat the Vikings 5-0 and travel to Southeast High School on Thursday for a 6pm match against the Pirates.
