HOWLAND OWNS THE FOURTH QUARTER

HOWLAND OH- In a thrilling matchup that came down to the wire, Howland showcased their resilience and determination on Saturday, unleashing a monumental fourth-quarter surge to secure a spot in the district semifinals with a hard-fought 45-32 victory over Tallmadge. Trailing entering the final frame, the Tigers erupted for an impressive 21-8 scoring burst, propelling them past their opponents and into the next round of the postseason.

Leading the charge for Howland was Alyssa Massucci, who delivered a stellar performance with a game-high 19 points, displaying her scoring prowess when it mattered most. Jessie DeSalvo also made significant contributions with 10 points, while Maya Kubanscek added 7 points to round out the Tigers’ offensive attack.

The tenacity and resilience exhibited by Howland throughout the game ultimately paid off as they punched their ticket to the district semifinals.

Looking ahead, Howland sets their sights on their next challenge as they prepare to face Berkshire in the district semifinals. The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at Elyria, with tip-off set for 6:00. As they continue their postseason journey.

TIGERS MIGHTY ROAR HEARD THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – The Howland Lady Tigers were dominant right from the opening tip-off to start postseason play. They would roar to a 78-9 victory over visiting Ravenna in the Sectional Semifinal to advance to the next round.

 

The offense was in sync all night for the Tigers, as they were able to score the game’s first 21 points. Senior leader Alyssa Massucci would pile up 15 of the team’s 29 points in the first quarter, as she would end up leading all scorers with 25. Mia Barrish and Sophia Powell also contributed 8 apiece for the Tigers. All but one player for Howland was able to get on the board throughout the course of the night, with the bench compiling 41 points in total. 

 

Despite being held to single digits, Ravenna showed fight in the fourth, outscoring the Tigers in the final quarter 5-3. Shamyah Henderson led the Ravens with 5 points. Miriyha Sandifer and Abby Schofield each cashed in a bucket to add to the team’s total.

 

Howland (17-6) advances to the Sectional Final, where they will welcome Tallmadge on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 P.M. as the Tigers seek their third consecutive Sectional title. Ravenna closes their season with a 4-19 mark.

HOWLAND DOMINATES IN THEIR REGULAR SEASON FINALE

AUSTINTOWN OH- In a commanding performance on Tuesday night, Howland asserted their dominance from start to finish, securing a resounding 63-43 win over Fitch on the road. It was a game marked by Howland’s relentless offense and suffocating defense, as they controlled the tempo throughout the matchup.

Leading the scoring charge for Howland was Alyssa Massucci, who delivered a standout performance with an impressive 26 points. Gia Hoso added to the offensive onslaught with 10 points, while Mia Barrish, Sophia Powell, Jessie DeSalvo, and Maya Kubanscek each contributed 6 points, showcasing Howland’s balanced attack.

Despite a valiant effort from Fitch, led by Kaliana Ray with 12 points and Ayla Ray with 9 points, they struggled to contain Howland’s offensive firepower and fell short in their attempts to mount a comeback.

With this win, Howland improved their season record to 16-6, setting the stage for the upcoming tournament as they prepare to host Ravenna on February 21st. The victory provides momentum and confidence as Howland looks ahead to postseason play.

Meanwhile, Fitch, with a record of 13-8, has one more regular-season game remaining, scheduled for Saturday at Salem. As they prepare for their final matchup before the postseason, Fitch will aim to regroup and finish their regular season on a high note, seeking to carry positive momentum into the playoffs.

WARRIORS DEFENSE TRAVELS WELL

HOWLAND OH- In a thrilling road showdown, West Branch showcased their defensive prowess and emerged victorious against Howland with a hard-fought 43-39 win on Saturday. It was a test of resilience for both teams, but West Branch’s stalwart defense proved to be the difference-maker in the end.

Leading the charge for West Branch was Audrey Eaton, who displayed her scoring prowess with 11 points, supported by Sophia Gregory with 8 points and MiKalyn Woods with 7 points. Carter Shepard also contributed 6 points to bolster their team’s offensive efforts.

Howland put up a strong fight, with Alyssa Massucci leading their scoring with 11 points, followed by Jessie DeSalvo with 7 points and Sophia Powell with 6 points.

However, West Branch’s tenacious defense proved to be the deciding factor, as they held off Howland’s offensive threats to secure the victory.

With this win, West Branch improved their impressive season record to 19-2, setting the stage for a final regular-season showdown at home against Girard on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Howland, with a season record of 15-6, will conclude their regular season with a matchup against Fitch on Tuesday.

HOWLAND KEEPS THE RAIDERS AT ANCHOR

Leading the charge for Howland was Alex Henry, who delivered a stellar performance with an impressive 22 points, showcasing his scoring prowess and leadership on the court. Anthony Chieffo added 10 points to the scoreboard, while TJ Douglas and John Perry each contributed 6 points, highlighting the team’s balanced offensive effort.

Despite a strong effort from South Range, led by Landon Moore with 12 points and Luke Rohan with 7 points, they couldn’t overcome Howland’s determined performance.

With this crucial win, Howland improves their record to 10-10 as they prepare for their next challenge, a road matchup against Niles next Friday. Meanwhile, South Range, with a 12-6 record, turns their attention to their upcoming game against Lowellville on Tuesday, looking to bounce back from the tough loss.

TIGERS PUT THE CLAMPS ON LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- In a dominant performance, the Howland girls’ basketball team secured a convincing victory over Lakeview with a final score of 64-32. Alyssa Massucci led the charge with an impressive 18 points, while Mia Thomas contributed 13 points to the team’s success. The win improved Howland’s overall record to an impressive 16-5.

Looking ahead, the Tigers have a challenging matchup as they are set to host the state-ranked West Branch. The JV game is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 am, followed by the varsity game at 1 pm. It promises to be an exciting contest. Lakeview (6-16) closes out their regular season. They’ll look forward to their first tournament game on February 21st at Rootstown.

STRONG CANFIELD FINISH EARNS ROAD VICTORY

In a hard-fought battle on the road, Canfield’s basketball team showcased their resilience and determination, using a strong fourth-quarter performance to pull away from Howland and secure a 46-36 victory.

The game remained tightly contested throughout, with both teams trading baskets and defensive stops. However, it was Canfield’s dominant fourth quarter that ultimately proved to be the difference-maker, as they outscored Howland 14-6 to seal the win.

Leading the scoring charge for Canfield was Sam Castronova, who delivered a standout performance with 13 points, followed closely by Ray McCune contributing 10 points. Drew Shapiro added 8 points to the winning effort.

Despite the loss, Howland put up a valiant effort, with Chris Fenton and Alex Henry each scoring 11 points, while John Perry added 7 points.

With this important victory, Canfield improves their record to an impressive 14-4 and now sets their sights on a highly anticipated matchup with arch-rival Poland on the road on Friday. Meanwhile, Howland, with a 9-10 record, will look to bounce back as they host South Range at home on Friday.

MASSUCCI BREAKS BOARDMAN’S HEART AT THE BUZZER

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – In another AAC classic, the Howland Lady Tigers would steal one from the Boardman Spartans. Senior Alyssa Massucci drained in a long two at the buzzer to lift the Tigers to a 54-52 shocker over the Spartans at home.

 

Most of Massucci’s points came in the first half as she picked up 12 in the first sixteen minutes, en route to an 18-point performance. She was also just one of three Howland girls in double figures as Maya Kubanscek picked up 14 and Sophia Powell cashed in 10. The Tigers led by as much as 11 at one point, keeping pace with the first-place Spartans. They were also aided from shooting 77% from the foul line.

 

Howland led 30-25 at the break before Boardman would respond with a 20-8 third quarter. Senior Mackenzie Riccitelli would pick up 10 of those third-quarter points, and she would end the afternoon leading all scorers with 19. Tagging along Riccitelli was M.C. Werth, who picked up 13 points. Samantha Duble also had a strong quarter, as she compiled all nine of her tallies in the second, all of them coming from beyond the arc. Overall, the Spartans would pick up 10 three-pointers as a unit.

 

Boardman led by two possessions in the final minutes thanks to a three-pointer from Riccitelli, but the Tigers came roaring back. After a made bucket, Maya Kubanscek drew a shooting foul on the following possession and sank both of her free throws to tie it up at 52-52. The Tigers then got a key rebound and called a timeout with 2.9 seconds left to give Massucci a chance to end it in regulation. Massucci then received the inbound pass and shot it up to hit nothing but net, igniting the celebration.

 

Howland (14-5, 4-3 AAC) will now travel out to Lakeview on Thursday to square off with the Bulldogs. The Tigers won last year’s meeting at home 62-34. Boardman (15-5, 6-2 AAC) has their six-game winning streak snapped as they will look to get back in the win column Monday at home against Warren JFK.

TIGERS DEFENSE BATTLES THROUGH TO VICTORY

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – In what was a low-scoring affair, Howland got the last laugh against Boardman. Steven Bubon, son of Howland head coach Dan Bubon, put in a clutch and-1 with 14.1 seconds left, ultimately leading the Tigers to a nail-biting 34-33 victory over the Spartans.

 

Neither team led by more than five in a game where only 67 combined points were cashed in. Howland only led 14-13 at halftime before the Spartans made it a game of lead changes in the final 32 minutes. Terrell McDowell would lead the Boardman charge with 9 points, including a crucial three-pointer off of a Howland turnover to give the Spartans a short-lived lead late in the contest.

 

Despite Howland’s offensive struggles, Bubon came in at the right time. Although he only scored 5 points on the night, they were all he needed as he found the open lane and put up the bank shot with pivotal contact from the Spartans. His foul shot would fall out, however, but the Tigers held off Boardman at the buzzer as a Spartan putback off an offensive rebound just fell out. Assisting Bubon on the night was Alex Henry with 11 points, along with another 8 points from John Perry.

 

Howland (9-9, 3-4 AAC) completes their first season sweep of the Spartans since the 2017-18 season. They will now head into a rematch at home on Tuesday as they welcome in rival  Canfield. The Cardinals won the first meeting 54-37 back on January 26th. Boardman (3-14, 0-7 AAC) will take a week off from play before they travel to North Canton Hoover next Friday night to end a two-game road stand.

FITCH CAPTURES OVERTIME THRILLER

HOWLAND OH- In a thrilling clash that extended beyond regulation, Fitch emerged victorious on the road against Howland on Wednesday, securing a hard-fought 54-50 win in overtime. The Falcons showcased resilience and determination in a contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Ayla Ray led the scoring charge for Fitch with an impressive 20-point performance, complemented by Rachel Spalding’s 17 points. Destanie McCullough and Kylie Folkwein added 8 and 7 points, respectively, contributing to the Falcons’ balanced offensive effort.

Howland fought valiantly, with Mia Barrish leading their offensive efforts with 11 points. Alyssa Massucci and Gia Hoso each added 10 points, while Jessie DeSalvo contributed 8 points in a closely contested battle.

With this hard-fought win, Fitch (12-6) looks to maintain their momentum as they travel to face West Branch on Saturday. Howland (13-5), despite the narrow defeat, remains focused on their upcoming matchup on the road against Boardman.
