CUNNINGHAM’S BIG NIGHT NOT ENOUGH FOR FALCONS

JEFFERSON OH- The 2020-2021 winter sports season has been crazy. From not knowing if there was going to be one to not knowing who your opponent will be from night to night. But teams have pushed ahead. Jefferson is one of those teams. The NE8 is going forward without half of its teams right now, but the Falcons are making the best of it.

Tuesday night they welcomed in one of their rivals Pymatuning Valley. Both teams were ready to go from the opening tip. The first quarter both teams were feeling each other out and seeing where they could attack. The Lakers were able to be get the early lead and keep it throughout the game. Jefferson fought hard all night, but unfortunately they couldn’t get the shots to fall. Py Valley was aggressive all night and keep the pressure on the Falcons. Lakers lead at the half 33-22.

They extended the lead to 20 in the third quarter. Jefferson was able to get as close as 9 in the forth, but Py Valley pushed a head and closed out the evening with a 76-62 win over the Falcons. Jeffersons lone senior Dakota Cunningham was their leading scorer with 22 points. He hit 5 threes on the night.  Leading the way for the Lakers was Tanner Rhodes who had 25 points. He also had 2 dunks on the night.

JEFFERSON PICKS UP FIRST WIN

CORTLAND OH- The final game of the regular season saw two teams looking for their first win. Jefferson traveled to Lakeview on Friday night and was able to do just that. It was a perfect evening for high school football in Lakeview. Both teams came in hungry for their first win of the season.

Jefferson wasted no time as they were able to take the opening drive right down the field and score. The Falcons had an up tempo game plan and it frustrated the Bulldogs all night. The Lakeview offense was not able to muster any sustained drives in the first half. And their defense had no answer for the no huddle game plan that Jefferson ran.

Jefferson relied on the work horse Daniel Bruckman to do all the heavy lifting Friday night. The senior running back touched the ball 41 times for a total of 214 yards, and 6 touchdowns. He was the shining light for the Falcons. Lakeview fought hard all night and was able to take the opening drive of the second half down for a score. It took them just 2 plays to go 61 yards for the score. The Jefferson D was caught a little off guard and had to regroup following that score. They were able to keep the Bulldogs out of the end zone for the rest of the game. The final score was 49-7. Both these teams are young and will be forces to contend with in the future in the NE8.

Jefferson will travel to Martin’s Ferry in round 1 of the OHSAA playoffs. Lakeview will host Grand Valley in a non playoff game on October 16th.

The Raiders were led by Hannah Hiekkinen with 7 kills. Maddie Dado played great defense with a match-high 25 digs.  Jamie Feren set up 13 assists. Izzy Lamparty, and Julia Blasko has 3 blocks a piece.

RAIDERS LIGHT UP JEFFERSON

JEFFERSON OH- Friday night the Raiders made the long drive up route 11 to face the Jefferson Falcons, the long drive was worth it. South Range came away with a 52-20 win on Friday night to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was a beautiful night for high school football. Both teams came out ready to go. Jefferson started out slow and couldn’t get a drive together. A blocked punt gave the Raiders great field position and it didn’t take them long to take advantage of it. Raiders had the ball inside the 30 yard line and scored quickly. The drive was capped off by a 9yd strike from Michael Patrone to Corey Penick for the touchdown. The next drive for Jefferson was promising but an interception gave the ball right back to the Raiders. South Range again drove right back down the field and scored on a 4 yard pass to Luke Blasko. But Jefferson wasn’t going to go away. Sophomore QB Grant Hitchcock took his team right back down the field and he connected with Austin Jones for a 24 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. Raiders next drive stalled and Jefferson had some momentum. But the Raiders defense came to play Friday night. They were able to hold off the Falcons drive and get the ball back for Patrone and company.  The Raiders scored 3 more times before halftime.

South Range keep that rolling into the second half and was able to get a running clock into the 3rd quarter. Jefferson had some promising drives but just weren’t able to finish them off. But they are a young team with a lot of talent. Hitchcock is only in his first year at starting qb and has a bright future. He was able to finish with 249 total yards on the evening. Senior running back Daniel Bruckman contributed with 90 yards of his own on the ground.

The Raiders offense was clicking on all eight cylinders. The run game, pass game, defense, and special teams all looked very good for them Friday night. Michael Patrone had 364 total yards. 220 passing and 144 on the ground. He threw for 5 TDs. That is a school record. Dylan Dominguez had 163 total yards, 2 rushing TDs, and 2 receiving TDs. And senior kicker Harley Novak chipped in with 10 points of her own, making all 7 extra points and making a 26 yd field goal in the forth.

Both teams have their final regular season home games next week as Jefferson welcomes in Girard, and the Raiders will  take on Struthers.
