GIRARD OVERCOME WITH EMOTION AFTER HARD FOUGHT VICTORY

By now you know and have heard that the Girard Indians Football Team had a pretty big win last night.  The kind that doesn’t come around every day, or in this particular case, ever before.  For the first time in school history, the Indians are fighting for a State Championship.

Licking Valley gave Girard everything they had, and like any great prize fight, it came down to the final round.  It was the haymaker TD pass thrown from arguably the top Quarterback in the Country, Marky Waid to Nick Malito on 4th and 15 that knocked out the Panthers with 1:44 remaining in the final frame.  The Indians would win the game by a final score of 53-48, and we have strung together the raw emotion following the victory including the final touchdown call, an interview with Mark Waid, and the moment of the year as Head Coach Pat Pearson shares a moment with his wife after the game.  (Interviews and photos courtesy of Brent Bigelow)

We at YSN are incredibly proud and humbled to follow this team and this community.

WE ARE…

Proud.

LAMPARTY POSTS CAREER HIGH, RANGE SAILS PAST SHAW

HOWLAND, OH- The South Range Girls Basketball team opened up the season with some unfamiliarity Friday night at Howland vs Cleveland Shaw as part of the Toni Ross Tournament.

2 new additions to the starting lineup walked on the floor, one a senior Marlaina Slabach and one a freshman Lexi Giles. On top of new faces head coach Tony Matisi was unable to be on the sidelines serving a 2 game suspension for his ejection out of the 2018 regional semifinal last season. Through the adversity, the Lady Raiders stood tall and earned a trip to the tournament championship with a 62-46 win over Cleveland Shaw.

In the 1st quarter, the Raiders scored right out of the gate as Marlaina Slabach buried a three in their offensive possession. The rest of the quarter, however, was lethargic for the Raiders offense. Not for a lack of execution the Raiders got to the free throw line 11 times in the frame but only put in 3 shots. They trailed after 1 9-8.

In the 2nd quarter, Izzy Lamparty took control. Scoring 8 points in a row and opening the Raiders offensive attack. Lamparty’s ability to score inside made room for Bri Modic and Marlaina Slabach to put in a couple of threes. The Raiders outscored the Cardinals 21-7 in the frame to take a 29-16 lead into halftime.

The Raiders kept rolling in the 3rd quarter as Bree Kohler turned quick hands on defense into easy buckets on offense. The Cardinals stayed in the game with some exceptional perimeter shooting from their guards but the Raiders were able to maintain a 46-36 lead after 3.

The perimeter shooting that kept the Cardinals close in the 3rd was non-existent in the final frame. The Raider offense kept on the attack and pulled away with a 62-46 victory.

Izzy Lamparty who missed all of the volleyball season with an injury came back on the court with a vengeance. She dropped a career-high 30 points and also snagged 14 rebounds and 5 steals.  Bree Kohler also had a strong outing scoring 17 points 4 rebound and 4 steals. The Lady Raiders will play Howland Saturday night at 7:30 for the tournament championship.

GIRARD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH PAT PEARSON (EP 9)

Step by step, the Indians continue to march against their oppositions best punch.  Coach Pearson and The Tribe were able to nail down another victory and now head to the Regionals to duke it out with a familiar foe in Hubbard.  One that gave the Indians a loss by 15 earlier this season.

It’s a battle to head to the State level of play, and we’ve got the game plan for you before kickoff.

Can the Tribe rally together and continue the journey toward the State Title?

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH DAN YEAGLEY (EP 9)

In what will go down as one of the greatest games we’ve ever witnessed, the South Range Raiders left everything they had on the field last Friday Night against St. Clairesville to come up a point shy.

A loss that by no means defined their season, but more represented it in a nutshell.

Meanwhile, there is no time to sulk as Week 10 is upon us, and West Geauga is waiting for an opportunity for a signature win.  We know the Raiders are looking to send the seniors out with a bang.  So, DJ Yokley sits down with Coach Yeagley in this week’s South Range Football Coach’s Corner with Dan Yeagley (EP 9)

GIVING THE OPPOSITION FITZ

Dave Fitzer is every football coach’s dream.  He’s the young man with the will and determination to be the “Next Man Up” for your squad.  A position that’s almost more important than the starters, Fitzer has made a career out of his position flexibility on the offensive and defensive lines.

While most have to study for one position, Fitzer is doing homework on multiple so in the event that his number is called, the team doesn’t skip a beat.

A dynamo on the front lines, Dave also gets it done in the classroom and introduces us to the teachers that made the biggest impact on him on this episode of South Range Raider Player Profile: GIVING THE OPPOSITION FITZ

GIRARD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH PAT PEARSON (EP 5)

Another big victory in Week 8 for Girard, and let’s talk about the guys who don’t get the credit all the time necessarily, the guys up front!

Coach Pearson sits down with YSN’s Britt Taylor and talks about the way that the boys up front have changed the game for Girard.  As well as how the defense has stepped their game up from a chain-gang mentality.  Britt also talks about how the boys have cleaned up their game from a penalty standpoint.

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH DAN YEAGLEY (EP 8)

Tough schedules can break good teams.  They can also make great teams.

South Range is trying to determine what side they will stand on in 2018, and if previous weeks are any indication, the Raiders are looking to finish strong!

St. Clairsville is boarding the Pirate Ship this week for a game with all kinds of determinations for the burgundy and gold.  Another possible win and they are in scenario is on the docket, and we sat down with Coach Yeagley to discuss what the task is at hand in Week 9, as well as what he and the boys learned in last week’s game vs. Louisville.

Also, a social media question and answer you won’t want to miss (We’ll say a prayer for you, Coach! 😀 )
