RAIDERS USE FINAL GASP TO KEEP WIN STREAK ALIVE

CANFIELD OH- South Range came in to Tuesday night sporting a 4 game winning streak. As they prepared to host Struthers, they knew this would be a different animal to beat. The Wildcats bring a ton of talent with them everywhere they go. Despite all of that though, these two teams found themselves locked in a defensive battle instead of a high flying barn burner.  In fact only nine points were scored between the two teams in the first quarter.  The trend continued the rest of the night. The Raiders held a 16-14 lead into the locker room.

It was the second half where Struthers started to pick it up a little bit.  They slowly but surely built up a 30-22 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. They’d eventually grab a ten point lead later on in the final frame.  With time running down and their backs against the wall, the Raiders turned on a switch and went on a quick 10-0 run to tie things up. It was helped along by a couple of interior shots from Landon Moore, and a three from Nate Lewis.  It wouldn’t be Nate’s last clutch play either. After the Raiders tied the game at 36-36, the Raiders defense forced a turnover.  On the other end Lewis drilled a mid range jumper from the foul line to give his team the two point lead with 1 second left.  Struthers had a pretty good last look considering they only had one tick to get it off, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Raiders walked away with a five game win streak 38-36.

Moore led the Raiders, and all scorers with 16 points. Lewis was able to finish with 7 points, and 5 of those came during the Raiders 12-0 run to end the game.  Ayden Leon had to really work for his 7 points as Struthers made a point to lock down the paint.

The Wildcats were led by Austin McCollough who got in to double figures with 11 points.  Chance Lazcko had a big third quarter for the Wildcats and finished with 8 points.  Nick Delgratta and Rocco Garchar both scored 6 points for the Struthers offense.

South Range is still riding high, but their streak will be tested again on Friday as they welcome in Niles. Struthers will try to bounce back as they host league leading Girard.

RAIDERS WIN STREAK CONTINUES

HUBBARD, Ohio –

South Range (5-6) has four Raiders post double digits for their third straight conference road victory.

Winless on the season, the Hubbard Eagles (0-12) road the back of Gavin Rybicki’s strong first three minutes to take an early 7-2 lead. South Range’s Landon Moore would respond with a strong finish to the period, finishing with all seven of the South Range points to close the gap to just three at the end of one.

Moore would add four points to his total in the second quarter and would receive assistance from Luke Rohan and Ayden Leon, each adding in three points, sending the game into a tie of 17 all at the break.

Coming out of the break, the South Range Raiders would turn great defense into easy offense. Five different Raiders would score three or more points in the third quarter that saw South Range post 22.

Trailing by nine to start the fourth quarter, Hubbard went on multiple runs to draw the game within two possessions, but could never string together stops with scores to take back the lead. South Range would escape with the victory, 53-49.

SOUTH RANGE BACK TO WINNING WAYS

CANFIELD OH- After having back to back close battles with top tier conference opponents not go their way, South Range was chomping at the big to be back at home.  They hoped that the friendly confines of the Raiders gym would get them back to winning.  They welcomed in a Hubbard team they only beat by three points in their first meeting.  This one was just as tough as the last as the Eagles and Raiders jockeyed for position all night. After a 10-8 first quarter, the Raiders got some space before halftime leading 20-14.  Hubbard had one chance in the third where they made a run and took a 22-21 lead in the third quarter.  Almost immediately Emma Cunningham buried a three to put the Raiders back ahead. The Raiders lead was pushed back to six, 28-22 by the end of the third.  They’d win the final frame 10-7 and get away with a 38-29 win.

Cunningham had a great night for the Raiders as she led the way with 16 points.  Taylor McClish got the Raiders on the board early, and finished with 8 points. She hit a pair of threes.  Sydney Penick chipped in 7 points.

Hubbard was led by a great effort from Eleni Grillis who broke in to double figures with 10 points.  Sophie Murphy worked hard to get 7 points to help out the Eagles cause.

South Range will look to build on the win on Thursday as they host Jefferson. Hubbard is also back in action on Thursday as they hit the road to Struthers.

RAIDERS WIN THIRD IN A ROW

POLAND OH- Coming off a weekend where they won two games in two days, including knocking off unbeaten Lowellville South Range took their momentum on the road to face off with Poland.  It was a back and forth tug of war from the start. The game was tied up at 11 after one quarter of play setting the tone for what was to come.  The Raiders were able to win a low scoring second quarter 9-8 to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room. Poland responded by winning the next frame by one and tying the game up 32-32 after 3.  The Raiders defense locked down and only allowed the Bulldogs to hit two shots from the field in the fourth quarter and won a thriller 44-42.

Landon Moore matched his jersey number finishing with 15 points to lead the Raiders. Dylan Turvey clocked in a good game putting in 8 points.  Both Luke Rohan, and Ayden Leon scored 6 points to help out the South Range offense.

Poland was led by Cole Fulton who scored 14 points. JP Genova gave the Bulldogs another player in double figures finishing with 11.  Luke Generalovich and Danny Nitolli both were able to add 6.

STRUTHERS FIGHTS PAST RAIDERS BEST SHOT

STRUTHERS OH- The scope of the NE8 might be in a for a change this year. Every season since the conference’s conception it has been Poland and South Range as 1 & 2 in the standings.  Struthers wanted to change all of that, and Monday night they had the chance to take a big step towards that goal.  The Wildcats welcomed in South Range who they had never beaten inside conference play.  They took South Range’s hardest punch but battled through with some clutch plays down the stretch to win 50-45.

Emma Morris led the way for the Wildcats with 10 points.   Chloe Neider chipped in 9 points for the Wildcats. She was 7/8 at the free throw line. Faith Stellato was able to contribute 7 points. She hit a big three with a minute left in the game to put the Cats up by 2.

RAIDERS BREAK OUT FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

CORTLSND OH- South Range has had their struggles in the tough NE8 this season. With there being multiple games where the Raiders felt like they were a few plays away, they let loose on Friday night in Lakeview. Playing with their heads on fire the Raiders stormed to a 61-37 win.

Nate Lewis had a huge day for the Raiders and led them with 16 points. FITCH SECURES FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

AUSTINTOWN OH- For The Austintown-Fitch Falcons girls basketball team, The All-American Conference (AAC) has been a challenge when it comes to conference games this season. With Fitch facing off against the likes of Canfield, Boardman and Howland this season, and despite being competitive, coming up short in those three contests. However, Wednesday night saw The Falcons host the last AAC opponent they had yet to face this season in The Warren Harding Raiders. Harding would also enter Wednesday evening looking for their first conference win, with their lone prior conference contest a heartbreaking four point defeat to The Howland Tigers. While Fitch was 2-0 against Harding a season ago and wanted to continue that success on their home court.

The first half saw Falcon freshman Kylie Folkwein find her rhythm from distance, knocking down a big distance shot early to help propel Fitch to an early lead. But The Raiders kept on battling, while starting four freshmen on the varsity squad, all of which showed great poise and confidence in their play. That has translated to success with Harding being winners in six of their first eleven contests this season entering Wednesday. The first half had Fitch in front after the first sixteen minutes of play.

Coming out of the second half, a Harding freshman with a familiar last name, Gianna Pompelia was finding success all over the floor for The Raiders, ending up with eleven points scored on the game. While girls like Trinity Taylor and Caden Reed showed incredible flashes of brilliance on both the offensive and defensive sides of the game. Both Kylie Folkwein and Jocelyn Jourdan commanded the posts, as Fitch was able to create a lot of second looks with offensive rebounds. However, The Player of The Game performance goes to Fitch senior Zayda Creque, scoring 14 second half points and ending with 20 total to contribute to a 49-37 victory over The Raiders.

The loss for Harding (6-6)(0-2) will keep them on the road in the conference, entering a different nest this time, that of The Canfield Cardinals (9–1)(1-0) on Saturday, January 7th. Following their first conference win, Fitch (4-8) will also be in action on Saturday, but they will be out of conference, hitting the road in a bout with The Liberty Leopards (4-3). Below are interviews with Fitch senior Zayda Creque and Fitch Head Coach Natalie Lynn!

URSULINE SLOWLY BUT SURELY WARES DOWN RAIDERS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Ursuline Fighting Irish kicked off their 2023 with a great matchup as they hosted the Warren G. Harding Raiders Tuesday night. Whenever these two schools face off, you just know you’re going to get a good show. The two did not disappoint early on as it seemed that we were looking at a tight game that would stay that way after the first quarter. But Ursuline’s defense found another level in the second quarter and carried that momentum onto the offensive play throughout the game. Forcing turnovers, grabbing rebounds, and multiple double-digit scorers is what kick-started the runway for the Irish going into the half. A fight back by the Raiders in the third had the game looking a little different, but once again, the Ursuline rebounding and scoring kept the Irish ahead and allowed them to come away with another home win over Harding, 69-41.

Although the Irish led 14-9 after the first quarter, it wasn’t until the second quarter where we saw that swarming defense and hot shooting. A quick three by DeShaun Will started the second quarter off and that created momentum for the Irish who ended up going on a huge run before the half to extend their lead. With the momentum heavily in the Irish’s hands heading back into the second half, Harding had to find a way back. The Raiders found a way to get some points back in the third and looked like they could use the fourth to complete a comeback. But Terrance Pankey, DeShaun Will, and Jayden Payne all had a different plan in the fourth. With the Irish finding a way to get back to their swarming defense, that opened the game back up to allow those three stars to showcase and close out the game.

For Ursuline, Pankey led the way with 24 points on the night. DeShaun Will ended the night with 16 points. Payne contributed 13 points for the Irish.

For Harding, Khamari Adams led the way with 10 points on the night. Jacob Lawerance added 8 for the Raiders.

Ursuline will move to 7-1 on the season. They will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Chaney to take on the 4-4 Cowboys. Stay tuned on YSNLive.com or on socials for any updates regarding Ursuline and all basketball coverage!

RAIDERS FLIP THE SCRIPT ON MOONEY

CANFIELD OH- After hosting 12 games in two days as part of their Holiday Hoops Classic, it was finally time for South Range to take part in the fun. They squared up with Cardinal Mooney in the 13th and final game of the event.  It wasn’t too much fun to start for the Raiders, the first half went all to the Cardinals. As South Range struggled offensively, Mooney took advantage and built a strong 19-4 lead heading into the break. The second half would be a completely different story however, as the Raiders went on an 18-3 run in the 3rd frame, and ended up winning the second half 33-6.  The mighty second half push got them to a 37-25 win.

Sydney Penick had a great night for the Raiders and led the way with 13 points.  Emma Cunningham turned on the energy in the second half and finished with 7 points, and 6 blocks.  Devin Sauerwein hit free throws through the end of the game to seal the victory.  Mooney was led by Maria Fire and Allee Blohm who both put together 9 point performances.
