LYTLE HITS 1000 AS BULLDOGS STAND ALONE ATOP NE8

CORTLAND OH- There was a ton on the line on Thursday in Lakeview as the Bulldogs hosted South Range. No only was it Lakeview’s chance to claim sole possession of the NE8 crown, but senior Tara Lytle was staring down the barrel of her 1000th career kill.  Lakeview got the win, and Lytle got the milestone. (25-15 25-11 25-9)

Lytle needed 11 kills coming in to reach her goal, and she shattered that finishing with 20.  Mallory Mailach took the lead setting on the night finishing with 22 assists.  Maddie Bayus led the Lakeview defense with 11 digs.

The Raiders were led by both Maria Primavera, and Ella Crumbacher finishing with 5 kills each.  Jamie Feren set up the offense and led with 9 assists.  Primavera also led the Raiders defense racking up 12 digs.

Lakeview are the 2022 NE8 Champions.  Lakeview has won 4 of the 5 NE8 championships since the conference was established.  The Bulldogs move on to host Mineral Ridge on Wednesday.  South Range still managed a winning record inside the NE8.  They’ll travel to East Liverpool on Monday.

RAIDERS ESCAPE FIVE SET THRILLER IN POLAND

POLAND OH- It seems like no matter the sport, a matchup between Poland and South Range is always prone to chaos. On Tuesday night it was the volleyball court that played host to this rivalry. The Raiders escaped a thriller in five sets. (25-23 16-25 23-25 25-22 15-11)

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS GOLF COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MEAGAN FRANK

CANFIELD OH- There’s a lot that goes in to starting a new program from scratch. South Range has become all too familiar with that this season, as they cut the ribbon on a girls golf program. In years before, girls had to compete on the boys team. Now, they’ll play against their peers and be given their best opportunity to thrive. At the helm of the program is head coach Meagan Frank. She has been talking about the start up process for a couple of years, and this season willed it in to existence.  Despite being in their first year as a program, South Range finished 3rd in the NE8 tournament.  There’s plenty of room for growth, but also plenty of reasons to look on the horizon with a smile.

Coach Frank was gracious enough to take the time to join YSN’s Running Point to talk about what all goes in to building up a new program. She talks about the support she’s gotten from the administration, some of the obstacles they’ve had to overcome, and much more. Check out the first ever Coach’s Corner to come out of South Range Girls Golf only on YSN!

BOARDMAN GETS BEAT BY WALK OFF FIELD GOAL

BOARDMAN, OH- The Boardman Spartans came into week 7 looking for their fourth straight win as they hosted Warren Harding Friday night. A low scoring first half with both teams punching a touchdown in on the ground turned into a back and forth second half leading up to a spectacular finish. The Spartans raced out to a 7-0 lead early in the first with a Fernando Ortiz 63-yard run. Harding punched back with a 1-yard run to tie the game up at 7 going into half. The Raiders were the ones that raced out to a lead of their own after half with Ryan Powell putting one in from 12 yards out. That 13-7 lead would not last long as Boardman’s Tomas Andujar found Willy Torres for the score to go up 14-13. The Spartans got the ball back quickly after and Ortiz took one 75 yards to the house to put Boardman up 21-13 going into the fourth. In the final stanza, the Raiders took over and controlled the Spartans. Harding forced a Boardman punt and then took the ball 72 yards down the field to tie the game up once again at 21-21. That touchdown had some effect on Boardman as Raylin Weaver for Harding grabbed an interception, then the Raiders controlled the clock with their run game and Dalys Jett was able to push Harding all the way to Boardman’s 7 yard line with just a minute to go. That ultimately set up shop for junior kicker Jake Daugherty on a 17-yard, game winning kick. Daugherty easily split the uprights as time expired to give Warren Harding the victory over Boardman, 24-21.

For Boardman, Ortiz finished with 178 yards on 16 carries for 2 TDs. For Harding, Oryan Dukes finished with 81 yards on 12 carries. Jett added 101 yards on 20 carries and 2 TDs. Powell contributed 83 yards on 14 carries for a TD.

The Spartans will move to 4-3  on the season and will host Dover on Friday. The Raiders will move to 2-5 on the season and will host Mooney Friday night.

BUTCHER HAS THE GOLDEN FOOT

CANFIELD OH- South Range has had a big tradition of incredible soccer in their program’s short history.  They are one of only 2 team sports that has been to 2 state champion games. That means they attract a ton of talent as you can imagine. This week we got to catch up with one of their best this year. Junior Logan Butcher is a player that opposing coaches circle a couple of times in their scouting report.  Butcher is one of the big players to watch if you go and see the Raiders play. However, he would never put the light on himself. Butcher is a humble team player that will always point to other teammates when asked about the team’s success.  He is exactly the type of person a coach would dream of coaching.

That statement may just be why multiple coaches want Logan to play for their team in the same season. Butcher not only leads the Raiders on the soccer team, but also steps up to kick for the football team as well. An injury thrusted Butcher into the starting kicker role and he has done everything asked of him on a moments notice.  He feels incredibly humbled to share the field with players that are part of a successful program.  The Raiders feel just as humbled to have him.

Butcher took the time to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about juggling soccer and football.  They also discuss his favorite soccer players growing up, how he transitions from kicking a  soccer ball to a football and much more. Don’t miss this exclusive interview with a dual sport Raider athlete, only on YSN.

Peyton Slovesko led the Eagles with 11 kills on the night. Alyssa Gregory flexed her defensive muscles with a match-high 38 digs.  Jade Shattuck managed 21 assists as well for Hubbard.

South Range has a trip to Girard on the horizon to test their skills. Hubbard also hits the road as they travel to Niles.

RAIDERS TAKE A VICTORY LAP IN ARROWHEAD

GIRARD, OH- As we narrow down to the last few weeks of the regular season, the matchups of the unbeatens become vital games to win and watch. On Friday, South Range traveled to Girard to see who would walk out still undefeated. With the Raiders being the powerhouse of the conference and the Idians pursuing their crown, defense and even special teams need to be a big factor to secure the victory for either team. Luckily for South Range, their defense and special teams unit came ready to show the Indians who is the true unbeaten team in the NE8. Thanks to the stifling defense, special teams, and the explosion on offense, South Range was able to walk away with a demanding 56-12 victory over Girard.

The first score for the Raiders to set the tone was from Shane Lindstrom who took a 58-yard punt to the house. Shortly after, the Raiders offense went back to work with Billy Skripac at the forefront. Skripac put up 186 yards passing with 2 TDs on just 5 completions. On the receiving end of those two touchdown passes were Jake Starkey who came up with a 70-yard TD, and Ayden Leon who caught the other for 56 yards. Skripac and the Raiders were not only successful in the air, they put up 212 total rushing yards with 5 TDs coming from five different players. For Girard with Nic Bengala unable to finish out the rest of the second half, their offense put up 283 total yards which mostly came in the first half. Bengala finished with: 13/19 for 194 yards and a TD. South Range kept them from obtaining more in the second half and ultimately forced Girards offense to put up their lowest amount of points all season.

Girard will move to 5-1 on the season going into week 7 as they will travel to Poland on Friday. South Range moves to 6-0 and will be back home to host Niles Friday night.
