POLAND TAKES ROUND ONE AGAINST RAIDERS

POLAND, Ohio, The Poland Bulldogs played host to the South Range Raiders in an early season clash of two of the premier programs in the NE8. Both teams came into tonight’s matchup looking for their first win on the season.

Poland’s offensive attack came out firing early and often in the first half, but through a majority of it, South Range goalkeeper Hannah Ball did a good job of keeping the Bulldogs at bay. Then, a goal by Freshman Kennedy Henderson opened up the Poland offense and gave the group a collective confidence boost. Goals also added by Kailyn Assion and Sophia Generalovich gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

One more goal by Generalovich in the second half gave Poland a 4-0 lead, the score they would win by as the game was eventually called a few minutes later due to inclement weather with just over 20 minutes remaining in the second half. The Bulldogs move to 1-1 on the season, while South Range drops to 0-3-1.

RAIDERS STORM THE GATES IN NILES

NILES OH: Both teams got big victories recently, but only one can get the momentum rolling early in the Northeastern 8 side. The Lady Red Dragons had a step, but couldn’t control the fast pace offense of the Lady Raiders of south range who came away with the 3-1 victory (SR 25-17) (Niles 25-23) (SR 25-11, 25-11).

Adding on some of the big points in the game were Jamie Feren, a couple aces from Sarah Kuhs, Olivia Meli the junior and Maria Primavera.  Niles came back to win the second series after a blown lead by the Raiders but it was not enough as South Range came right back sweeping them the next two serie and moving to three and one on the series, while Niles moved to one and one.

After the game YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with the winning coach Todd Irons.  The Raiders next game is Thursday the 25th against Struthers, a home conference rivalry matchup.

SPARTANS CATAPULT THEIR WAY PAST SOUTH RANGE

CANFIELD, Ohio- In a battle of two of the valley’s premier programs, it was Boardman who was able to come out on top of South Range by a score of 3-0 in Monday night’s boys’ soccer battle.

Both teams were coming into battle looking for their first win of the season, as Boardman had a 3-3 draw with Hoban to open their season, and South Range had a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Ursuline to begin their season.

The first half was very physical from both teams, as neither wanted to let the opposition get any easy looks inside, which led to a scoreless tie going into the break.

The second half was all Boardman though. The Spartans controlled possession for much of the second half, and two goals by Sava Crnjak helped catapult Boardman to a 3-0 victory, their first of the season. In addition to Crnjak’s elite attacking ability, Carson Essad, the Spartans goalkeeper, was lights out in the net all night long.

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KELSEY BENYO

CANFIELD OH- South Range girls soccer over the past two seasons have racked up more postseason wins than any other girls program in the area. Both years under head coach Kelsey Benyo have been blessed with success. They are back to back district champions, and have NE8 championships to carry around as well. This year they will have to prove their merit. They will have a lot of new faces after graduating a big senior class. The pieces they do return will have to step into bigger roles than ever as leaders. It’s time for the Raiders to prove just how good of a program they’ve built.

Coach Benyo was kind enough to drop in on the latest episode of YSN’s Running Point to give us a preview of the upcoming season. She talks to Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about the culture of the program, the tough schedule they have in front of them, and much more. Make sure to check out the season preview of South Range Girls Soccer with Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Kelsey Benyo.

RAIDERS SEE THEIR SEASON MEET ITS END

MASSILLON OH- It was a good old fashioned pitcher’s duel in Thursday’s Regional semifinal between South Range and Hawken. Neither team scored until the 5th inning. All the scoring actually came in that 5th as the Raiders struck for one in the top half, and Hawken answered with two in the bottom to secure the 2-1 victory.

South Range only managed 3 hits against Hawken’s pitching. Shane Lindstrom had a single and a RBI for the Raiders. Also getting hits were Corey Penick, and Logan Cormell.

Billy Skripac did everything he could on the mound for the Raiders. He struck out 8 and allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits.

South Range ends their impressive season with a 22-5 record, and owners of back to back district championships. Hawken advances to the regional final tomorrow against Waynedale.
