SPARTANS UPSET LAKESIDE ON THE ROAD

ASHTABULA OH- Boardman knew after their win on Tuesday that the rest of their tournament run would be on the road. On Thursday it was no problem for the Spartans as they went to Lakeside and upended the Dragons to continue on (25-20 22-25 25-18 25-13).

The Spartans had three players record double doubles on the night. Raegan Burkey recorded 39 assists, and 21 digs. Maria Torres led in kills with 16, she completed a double double as well with 11 digs. Katie Stamp has a solid night as well with 13 kills, and 22 digs. She led the team in digs.

Boardman will have to be road warriors again in the district semifinals as they travel to one seeded Massillon Jackson on Wednesday. That match will start at 6:00.

SPARTANS SURVIVE AND ADVANCE

BOARDMAN OH- It took everything they had, but the Spartans came back from the brink to beat Aurora in five sets, and give head coach Alyssa Birch her first career tournament win.

Aurora came out swinging. They definitely looked better than a 20 seed. They won back to back tight sets using clutch serving, and a spread out attack. Boardman helped them out with a few errors here and there, but all in all it was a pretty clean two sets of volleyball. The Lady Greenmen were just getting the big plays.

Boardman seems to become a different team with their backs against the wall. After losing two sets to the score of 23-25, the Spartans came out with even more energy. They dominated sets three and four to force a decisive set five.

That set five was much like the first two sets, back and forth each team grabbing some momentum. Aurora jumped out to a 6-3 lead, to which the Spartans responded with a 7-0 run to go up 10-6. The Spartans then saw that lead dwindle as Aurora tied the set up at 10. Boardman had the last laugh as they finished off a nail biter 15-13 with a Maria Torres kill.

Boardman was led by Torres who had an impressive 18 kills. Katie Stamp added 16 kills to the Boardman attack. Kathryn O’Horo stepped into the libero position tonight and led the defense with 24 digs. Torres completed a double double with 15, Stamp did the same collecting 14 digs. Raegan Burkey ran the offense to perfection. She set up 44 assists on the night.

Boardman advances and will now travel to face 10 seeded Lakeside for the sectional championship on Thursday at 6:00.

THE LEGEND OF O’HORO

BOARDMAN OH- The legend of Zorro tells the story of a masked man who uses his skills to protect the commoners from tyrannical officials. His cunning and skills help him to avoid capture which gives him his Zorro nickname. Boardman senior Kathryn O’Horo uses her cunning and skills to avoid blockers and lead her team to victory.

For the first time, Boardman has all seven seniors on the court at once. In years past due to injury and other circumstances all seven players in the 2021 class have not been able to be on the court at the same time. It makes them feel like they can finally reach their full potential. Kathryn is a strong emotional leader for her team. She set two goals coming in to this season. Her goals were to be more consistent with her serves, and to have better serve receive. You can clearly see from the numbers that she has accomplished her goals. Kathryn’s ability to set goals, and work to achieve them makes her a fine example for the young players coming up in the program.

Kathryn has committed only 11 service errors this season on 157 serves. She is one of four players on the team with over 100 digs currently sitting at 149. O’Horo has 62 kills on the season and averages just over a kill a set. Her hitting percentage this season is .167.

Kathryn sat down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior season. They discuss what its like to finally be with all seven seniors on the court, her future goals, and much more. Dive in to Spartan volleyball with the latest player profile “The Legend Of O’Horo.”
