SPOILER ALERT! MOONEY DASHES CHANEY CELEBRATION

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- When the clock finally counted down to 00:00 on the scoreboard and all the pomp and circumstance settled, football was truly back in the land of the Chaney Cowboys.  The efforts of so many different alumni, outlets, supporters, donors, coaches, fans, and family were happy to see the traditional red helmets flying around once again.

It was Cardinal Mooney that would hold their helmets high at the end of the evening, though.  Spoiling the celebration 13-6.

For the first half, Coach Amill and the Cowboys had exactly what they had put so much time and effort into; a lead against their rival, Cardinal Mooney.  However, in the second half, Mooney solved the puzzle and exploded on the ground.  Led by Zyere Rodgers’ 155 yards on 25 carries, Mooney controlled the tempo and the trenches in the second half to land the Week 1 victory, and take an early lead in the newly-formed Steel Valley Conference.

Pat Guerrieri came up big for the Cards when he pushed his way into the paint from 2-yards out to give Mooney the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

For Chaney, Marshall Herron led the rushing attack with four carries totaling 33 yards, while Delshawn Petrosky went 11-18 for 67 yards and an interception through the air as well as balanced the rushing attack for 37 yards.

Chaney will return to action at home next week against Beachwood while Mooney keeps the road trip going against Akron Hoban.

LADY IRISH CATCH FIRE BEYOND THE ARC, FINISH MOONEY

AUSTINTOWN, OH- The Ursuline Irish advanced to the district championship Monday night with a dominant win over their rival Cardinal Mooney 59-37.

The game started out pretty even, both teams were aggressive on both sides of the court, and both teams left a few points on the free throw line. But Ursuline’s three buckets from beyond the arc kept them ahead 13-6 after the first quarter was said and done.

The second quarter is when the Irish really separated themselves. The Irish outscored the Cardinals 21-4 in the second frame. They hit 3 more three-pointers bringing their total in the first half to 6. Mooney just couldn’t find an answer offensively.  At halftime, the Irish held a dominating 34-10 lead.

Mooney stabilized in the 2nd half finding some offense down low in the post with Conchettta Rinaldi and actually outscored the Irish in the final two quarters. The deficit they faced was just too big. The Irish would cruise to a 59-37 win.

Leading the Cardinals offensively was Rinaldi with 14 points, and 5 rebounds.

The Irish were led by Dayshanette Harris with 26 points. Destiny Goodnight was also in double figures with 12.  The Irish move on to play in the District Championship against Poland at 7:00 at Austintown Fitch High School.
