SEMBACH GRABS CAREER WIN NUMBER 500

LORDSTOWN OH- There have only been two coaches at Newton Falls since the basketball program started in 1955.  Roy Sembach is one of them. With time comes success for the head coach of the Tigers.  On Wednesday in Lordstown, the Tigers temporary home Newton Falls gave coach Sembach his 500th career win.  The victory over Crestview was by a score of 61-50.

The Tigers were led by a furious effort from Alex Pennington who finished with 21 points.  Dom Greathouse punched his way to double figures for the Tigers scoring 12 points.  Mac Haidet chipped in with 7 points.

Kirkland Miller paced the Rebels with a 17 point night. James Best also finished in double figures with 11.

Newton Falls continues their quest for a MVAC championship with a game against Garfield on Friday.  Crestview will also be back in action on Friday as they travel to Campbell.

MOONEY OWNS THE NIGHT IN YOUNGSTOWN

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO- Cardinal Mooney traveled on the road tonight to take on the Chaney Cowgirls. The Cowgirls kept pace with the Lady Cardinals during the first half as the score was 26-16.

The Cardinals took off during the second half scoring 15 points in the third quarter and 17 points in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals were led by Maria Fire, who dropped 16 points. Mooney’s defense held the Cowgirls to just 7 points in the second half as they pulled away to win 58-23. Cardinal Mooney will finish the season off with two home games against Ursuline and Poland.

EDGEWOOD ENDS CONFERENCE PLAY STRONG

ASHTABULA OH- Edgewood has spent the season winning a whole lot in the CVC.  On Wednesday night they faced their final conference matchup as they welcomed in Geneva. The Warriors pushed their way to a strong 62-35 win to finish out conference play.  They also picked up their 15th win overall.  They improved their conference record from 3 wins last season to 8-2 and a second place finish this year.   Kaci Kanicki and Katie McCollister both led the Warriors offense on the night with 16 points each.

Edgewood also celebrated National Women and Girls in Sports Day by having guest speakers talk during the night. Jen Crossley, Nancy Barbo, and Candice Wiggins all came and spoke in the gym.  Edgewood has a trio of non conference games coming up on their schedule. Next up for the Warriors is Saturday at Ashtabula St John.  Tip off for that game is set for 2:30.

WATERLOO GETS BACK ON TRACK IN MVAC PLAY

North Jackson, OH- The Waterloo Vikings traveled to take on the Jackson-Milton Blue Jays in MVAC Scarlet play on Tuesday night. The Vikings used a defensive effort to get past the Blue Jays.

The Vikings defense only allowed five points in the first quarter to take a 14-5 lead after one quarter. The Blue Jays countered defensively in the second quarter only allowing 8 second quarter points to pull within 7 points at the half. The Waterloo Vikings shot out of the gates in the second half, with a 7-0 run before a Jackson-Milton timeout. The Blue Jays came alive in the third quarter but still trailed 39-25 at the end of three. In the fourth quarter, Waterloo took a ginormous lead of over 20 points and cruised to a 55-42 victory.

The Vikings were led by Navarre Alhassan’s big fourth quarter scoring 22 total points. Alhassan made 11 free-throws in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Anthony Podojil was right behind with 15 points for the Vikings. Jackson-Milton was led by Ryen Romigh who scored 14 fourth quarter points and ended up with 18 total points.

URSULINE’S TRIUMPH OVER COWBOYS GETS GUNTHER TO THE TOP

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Terrance Pankey and Jaden Payne combined for twenty-five points to move Keith Gunther into first place as Ursuline’s all-time winningest head coach. The win is number 278 in coach Gunther’s incredible career.  

Ursuline (15-1) dominated the first half holding a double digit lead for half of the first and almost all of the second quarter. The Irish held a fifteen point lead on two separate occasions, and would end the half of a 6-0 run to take a 36-21 lead into half.

Coming out of the break, Chaney (9-7) would start the third on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to ten. After an Ursuline bucket, the Cowboys would respond with a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the game with a little more than a minute to play in the quarter. The two teams would trade buckets and Chaney would take a one-point lead into the final quarter. Chaney outscored Ursuline 20-4 in the third.

Just seventeen seconds into the fourth, Jayden Payne would hit a pair of free throws to give Ursuline the lead, which they would never relinquish. The Irish would go on to outscore Chaney 22-13 in the final seven minutes and forty-three seconds to give Ursuline the win, 66-54.

WHAT’S NEXT –

Ursuline: Now winners of their last eleven, the Irish will travel to take on the Howland Tigers (9-8). Howland won last season’s matchup 59-50, but the Irish have won 5 of the last 7.

Chaney: Following their second loss of the season to the Ursuline Irish, the Cowboys will look to bounce back with a home matchup against another SVC foe, in the rival East Golden Bears (8-8). Chaney dominated the Bears earlier this month, winning 61-34 on the east side. The Golden Bears will come in on a three-game losing streak.

MAPLEWOOD CRASHES THE BADGER PARTY

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Maplewood Rockets came into town on senior night to take on the Badger Braves. In a game that meant so much for the Braves and their NAC championship run, it was a game that was back and forth the entire way.

The Braves were led by Duncan Moy, who dropped 26. The Rockets kept up with the Braves with a lot of second attempt shots and by the hot hand Andrew Barnett, who dropped 6 three pointers on his way to a 24 point performance. The Rockets pulled away at the end just enough to slide pass the Braves 59-56.

With the loss the Braves are now out of contention to win the NAC championship, but will try to finish off the season strong and try to get prepared for tournament play.

The Braves will be back in action when they travel to Pymatuning Valley this Friday to take on the Lakers.

BROOKFIELD OFFENSE GOES INTO OVERDRIVE

BROOKFIELD, OHIO- The Labrae Vikings traveled to Brookfield tonight to take on the Warriors. The Warriors had the hot hand and stuck with it as Donovan Pawloski and Matteo Fortuna combined for 48 points. Isaiah Jones also had a productive night with a double-double, dropping 10 points and coming down with 10 rebounds.

Jay Mcgary and Austin Rowe also had stellar nights for the Vikings as they combined for 33 points, but it was not enough as the Warriors pulled away to win 81-61.

The Warriors will now head on the road for 3 consecutive games starting with Champion, before returning home to finish the season against the Mathews Mustangs.The Vikings will return to action at Home when they take on the Liberty Leopards this Friday.

RAIDERS BREATHE EASY

CANFIELD OH- South Range had been cutting it close over the last few weeks.  It seems like every game came down to last second heroics.  On Tuesday however while hosting Lakeview it was done third quarter heroics that let the Raiders pull away from the Bulldogs and breathe east down the stretch. The Raiders outscored Lakeview 14-7 in the third frame to take an 11 point 35-24 lead into the 4th. They’d go on to win 51-33.

Luke Rohan continued his scoring streak with 18 points to lead the Raiders.  Ayden Leon put in a lot of work in the paint and finished with 15 points.  Landon Moore was also in double figures with 12.

Lakeview was led on the night by Ryan Gee with 12 points.  They also got a good contribution from Tyler Capon who got into double figures with 10.

South Range will celebrate senior night on Friday as they host Poland in another NE8 clash.  Lakeview will try and bounce back on Friday as they host Struthers.

SPARTANS CLAMP DOWN DEFENSIVELY TO BEAT VIKINGS

BOARDMAN, OH- The Boardman Spartans hosted a division 1 opponent on Monday night in the North Canton Hoover Vikings. The Spartans had one of the best defensive games of the year to pick up an 18 point victory.

Boardman came out strong after losing three consecutive games. The Spartans held the Vikings to just 7 first quarter points while scoring 13. Boardman extended the lead to double digits at the half after Reagan Smith knocked down two three-pointers in the second quarter. Boardman went into the locker-room leading 25-15.

The Hoover Vikings had an early push in the third quarter, cutting the lead down to 4 points midway through the third. Head Coach Jeff Hammerton called a timeout, and the Spartans came out fired up scoring 8 consecutive points to lead by 12 late in the third quarter. Hoover made one more late push to cut the deficit to 7 points, trailing 36-29 at the end of the third. Boardman amped up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and held the Vikings scoreless in the final quarter. The Spartans picked up a huge victory over North Canton Hoover, winning by a final of 47-29. The 29 points was the least amount of points that Hoover has scored all season long.

Junior point guard Mackenzie Riccitelli led the team scoring 12 points, with senior Gia Triveri right behind with 9 points. The Spartans improve to 11-8 on the season, and will host Harding on Saturday. Coach Hammerton sat down with our YSN crew after the game, here is what he had to say:

 

EAGLES GO BACK TO BACK

HANOVERTON OH- United has been on a rampage in the EOAC all season long. Most teams haven’t been able to get close, but no teams have been able to get on top. On Monday night the Eagles hosted Columbiana and had an opportunity to win their second consecutive EOAC championship. The team that not too long ago had 5 consecutive league championships in the old ITCL now started a new streak with a 49-40 win over Columbiana to get back to back titles.

Taylor Cope did hard work in the post and led the way with 14 points.  Sam Lippiatt was also in double figures with 10 points. Maddie Kibbler was a key component to the Eagles win with 7 points.  Grace Knight chipped in with 8 points.

United still wants to end the EOAC season undefeated and they’ll continue that goal on Thursday as they travel to East Palestine.  Columbiana returns back home and hosts Leetonia.
