SPARTANS MARCH INTO FALL: 2023 CONNEAUT FOOTBALL PREVIEW

East Palestine, OH- As the leaves begin to change and the air takes on a brisk edge, the anticipation of fall football reaches its crescendo. In the heart of Conneaut, Ohio, this excitement is amplified by the resurgence of the Conneaut Spartans football team, fresh off a triumphant 2022 season. With an impressive 8-3 record and the honor of hosting the school’s first home playoff game, the Spartans have their sights set on another year of success as they navigate their first season in the Chagrin Valley Conference (CVC).

The 2022 season marked a turning point for the Spartans. Their remarkable 8-3 record and the electrifying atmosphere of their first-ever playoff game showcased the team’s growth, determination, and commitment to excellence. While the memory of the past season’s accomplishments still lingers, the team has set its sights on new challenges and opportunities in the CVC.

Transitioning from Pennsylvania’s District 10 to the Ohio-based CVC conference opens up new avenues for the Spartans. One of the most significant benefits of this move is the potential to accumulate more secondary points in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) playoff calculation by competing against Ohio teams. This strategic maneuver not only adds a layer of competitiveness but also showcases the Spartans’ willingness to embrace change in their pursuit of excellence.

The Spartans face the departure of Zack Rice, their all-time leading rusher, who racked up an impressive 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns during the 2022 season. Rice’s contributions were undeniable, and his absence will undoubtedly be felt. However, the team’s dynamic quarterback, Max Gleason, returns to the field. Gleason’s versatility, with 761 passing yards, 788 rushing yards, and a combined 16 touchdowns last season, makes him a formidable dual-threat presence for opposing defenses. His ability to maneuver the field with both his arm and his legs adds a multifaceted dimension to the Spartans’ offensive strategy.

Stepping into the role of the full-time running back is Wyatt Payne. Payne’s performance during the 2022 season showcased his knack for breaking open big plays, as he managed to rack up 584 yards and 7 touchdowns while sharing snaps with Rice. Payne’s combination of speed, strength, and resilience promises to be a vital asset to the Spartans’ offensive efforts this year.

The receiving corps of the Spartans will heavily rely on the athleticism of Bryce Spurlin and the wingspan of Thaddaeus Huya to create downfield threats. Their ability to outmaneuver defenders and create scoring opportunities will play a pivotal role in the Spartans’ offensive schemes.

On the offensive line, Scotty Edwards and Jaydon Anderson serve as the anchors. Their blend of strength and tactical awareness provides a solid foundation for the team’s offense. This duo’s ability to protect their quarterback and create openings for the running game is essential for the team’s success.

Defensively, the Spartans are poised to continue their dominance from the previous season. Ty Covill, the tackle artist, is back after amassing 92.5 total tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 5 quarterback sacks in 2022. Covill’s ability to disrupt plays and halt the progress of opposing offenses is a key component of the Spartans’ defensive prowess.

Jaydon Anderson, a cornerstone of the defense, returns after achieving 16 tackles for loss and 4 sacks during the previous season. His tenacity and ability to disrupt plays in the backfield provide a crucial advantage for the Spartans’ defense.

Wyatt Payne’s role as a ball hawk was evident in his 5 interceptions during the 2022 season. His ability to read the opposing offense and make crucial interceptions adds an element of unpredictability to the Spartans’ defensive strategy.

The move to the CVC conference brings an exciting new schedule for the Spartans. Facing eight new opponents, including Grand Valley, Independence, Chagrin Falls, Hawken, Jefferson, Geneva, Lakeside, and Madison, the Spartans are preparing for a diverse range of challenges. However, they won’t stray far from their roots, as the Ashtabula County’s oldest rivalry game against the Edgewood Warriors remains a highlight on the schedule.

Head coach Rocco Dobran’s enthusiasm is palpable as he looks forward to the upcoming season. The mix of experienced veterans and eager young talents has Dobran confident in the team’s unlimited potential and prospects for success.

The Spartans’ journey commences on August 17th, 2023, as they take on the Grand Valley Mustangs at home. For fans and enthusiasts, all of the Spartans’ games can be followed on the dedicated platform for Ashtabula County high school sports, www.YSNlive.com.

As the Conneaut Spartans embark on this new chapter, their determination, resilience, and commitment to excellence shine brightly. With a blend of seasoned players and fresh talents, they are primed to leave an indelible mark on the gridiron in 2023 and beyond.

LAKERS READY TO SET SAIL: PYMATUNING VALLEY FOOTBALL PREVIEW

East Palestine, OH- The Pymatuning Valley Lakers are gearing up for the upcoming football season with high hopes and determination, aiming to build upon the lessons and successes of their 2022 campaign. Last year, the Lakers finished with a 4-7 record, but what truly defined their season was their remarkable turnaround, finishing as conference champions by going undefeated in NAC conference play during a stunning four-game winning streak.

The Lakers started the 2022 season with a bit of a chill, struggling to find their rhythm. However, as the season progressed, they caught fire at just the right moment. This year, they are set to capitalize on the momentum they generated, thanks to their young and talented roster that now boasts valuable experience.

The 2022 Lakers were defined by their youthful exuberance, as underclassmen took on significant roles within the team. This strategic approach to grooming young talents has positioned the Lakers for an even stronger showing this year. Returning with a sense of confidence and experience, the Lakers are ready to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with.

One of the cornerstones of the team’s success is their quarterback, Ryan Croston. Entering his junior year as a third-year starter, Croston has shown remarkable improvement in his passing abilities. In the previous season, he amassed 430 passing yards and delivered three touchdowns. While his passing skills are noteworthy, it’s his running prowess that truly sets him apart. Croston emerged as the Lakers’ leading rusher in 2022, amassing an impressive 1,164 yards and scoring six touchdowns on the ground. His versatility and ability to make plays with his legs make him a vital asset to the Lakers’ offensive strategy.

Adding to the potency of the Lakers’ backfield is junior running back Ty Vickery, who returns for his second year. Vickery made his presence felt in the 2022 season, accumulating 922 rushing yards and leading the team with an astonishing 13 rushing touchdowns. Known for his rugged style and exceptional blocking skills, Vickery is a running back who punishes opposing defenses and refuses to be brought down easily. This dynamic duo is further enriched by the addition of highly touted freshman Luke Giddings, who has already turned heads with his impressive performance at the 2023 Ashtabula County High School football combine.

On the offensive line, the Lakers face the challenge of filling the void left by graduate Kamron Cargill, their top offensive lineman from the previous season. Seniors like Ben Crouser and up-and-coming talents like junior tackle Jon Finello and Brennen Moore are expected to step up and ensure the continuity of the strong offensive line tradition. Despite their youth, this line brings a blend of natural strength, awareness, and experience from the previous season, making it a formidable unit.

The Lakers’ passing game may not be their primary focus, but they possess the tools to air it out when needed. The receiving corps, which includes junior Jaren Nowakowski and sophomores Jayce Fulkman and Sean Croston, boasts speed and agility that can be leveraged to surprise opponents.

As a Division 6 team, the Lakers understand the necessity of versatility, often requiring players to contribute on both offense and defense. This approach ensures that the best athletes are on the field at all times, capable of making game-changing plays on both ends. This dual-role strategy highlights the Lakers’ commitment to dominating the game from all angles.

The Lakers’ schedule for the upcoming season features some new opponents, including Girard, a 2022 playoff team, and Southeast, who finished the previous season with a 4-6 record. Among the anticipated matchups, the clash against their rival and future conference foe, Grand Valley, stands out. This encounter, set for September 1st, holds more than just bragging rights—it’s a battle for the coveted Battle of the Valley trophy.

Coach Neal Croston understands the keys to success for his team in the upcoming season: “We need to limit big plays on defense and create big plays on offense. Our overall team speed and strength has increased this year and that should help on both sides of the ball.” With a renewed sense of purpose, improved skills, and an unwavering commitment to their game plan, the Lakers are poised to make a significant impact in the 2023 football season.

For those eager to follow the Lakers’ journey, all their games will be available on Ashtabula’s home for high school sports, www.ysnlive.com. The Pymatuning Valley Lakers are ready to hit the field, rebuilt and revitalized, showcasing their passion and dedication to the sport they love. The stage is set for another exciting season of football, and the Lakers are determined to leave their mark on the gridiron.

The 2023 season ushers in changes not only in personnel but also in conference affiliation. The Falcons will make their debut in the CVC conference, competing in the Lake Division. This shift presents an exciting challenge as the team faces new opponents and strives to continue its winning streak.

Leading the charge for the Falcons this year is quarterback Kaige Boczar. Boczar, known for his electrifying athleticism, transitions to the role of full-time starter after taking snaps in the previous season and accumulating 313 yards on 24 attempts. Notably, Boczar previously showcased his skills as a wide receiver, with 26 catches for 425 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022. In the running back position, Luke Funtash steps up as the primary option for the second consecutive year. Funtash demonstrated his capabilities in the previous season, amassing 873 rushing yards and contributing 7 touchdowns. The offensive line, while young, holds promise with players like Alex VanGiesen, Jose Rivera, Dylan Jacobs, Colton Rood, and Jordan Tressler bringing their natural size and strength to the table.

The wide receiver corps is undergoing competition for the top spot, with players such as Devin Salinas, Caden Heinly, and Dylan Burlingham vying for their chance to shine. On the defensive front, the Falcons’ linebacking core, featuring Anthony Shank, Brandon Truckey, Luke Funtash, and Matthew Webster, aims to thwart opposing offenses with their agility and strength, stopping run games in their tracks.

The Falcons also boast one of Ashtabula County’s top kickers, Jensen Yarosh. Yarosh’s precision on special teams in 2022, with a field goal success rate of 5/7 and a remarkable 46/52 on PATs, adds an extra layer of confidence to the team’s performance.

The 2023 schedule introduces seven new opponents, including strong teams like Beaver Local, Lutheran West, and Perry, each with 9 or more wins and deep playoff runs in the previous year. Familiar foes from Ashtabula County, including Lakeside, Geneva, and Conneaut, also make appearances. The Falcons kick off the season against Girard, their old NE8 conference rival, in what promises to be an exciting opening match.

A highly anticipated event in the Falcons’ schedule is the annual faceoff against Edgewood, with the coveted Hoadley Cup at stake. The competition is bound to draw immense excitement from fans and players alike.

As the 2023 season unfolds, third-year head coach Brandon Hanna, awarded the Division 4 Coach of the Year in Ohio, emphasizes the team’s youthful energy, speed, grit, and unity as the key factors for success. Coach Hanna underscores the importance of maintaining the team’s health and fostering rapid growth and cohesion throughout the season. Coach was quoted “Expect a young team that’ll strive to play fast, with grit and together. In order to see success we’ll have to stay healthy and find a way to gel and grow at a quick pace through the season.”

The Falcons are poised to build on their incredible momentum from the previous year and are set to continue their journey towards success. Fans can catch all the action on Ashtabula’s home for high school sports, www.ysnlive.com, as the Falcons aim to make their mark once again on the football field.
