LATE FIELD GOAL LIFTS SPARTANS OVER MOONEY

MINERAL RIDGE OH-

The Boardman Spartans football team opened up the season with a hard fought 10-7 victory over Cardinal Mooney at Mineral Ridge High School Friday night.  Austin Congson kicked a go ahead field goal in his first varsity action with under 5:00 minutes left in the game to give the Spartans the victory.

After a scoreless first half, Mooney was able to get on the board with a TD pass on their first drive of the third quarter.  The Spartans would respond with a drive down to the Mooney 7 yard line but would be stopped on fourth down.  Mooney answered back with a big third down conversion for a 63 yard gain but on the following play Aiden Berg stripped a Cardinal receiver and Tomas Andujar picked it up for the fumble recovery. Following a Spartan interception, Berg would come up big again with his second interception of the day inside the Spartan 10 yard line.

The Spartans put together their best offensive possession of the game following Berg’s interception with a 91 yard td drive.  Big plays on the drive included a 3 and 11 Andujar to Fernando Ortiz conversion to keep the drive alive.  Ortiz would finish off the drive with a 34 yard touchdown run knotting the score at 7.

Following a Spartan defensive stop and a short punt, Boardman would drive 30 yards setting up Congson’s game winning field goal.

Next up for the Spartans will be a home matchup with the Chaney Cowboys Friday August 26th at 7 PM.
