MAKING THE HITTERS WILT

CANFIELD OH- Stepping into a brand new role is never easy, especially when you’re following in the footsteps of greatness. For South Range softball, pitching has been a cornerstone of their success, with every pitcher since 2010 continuing their career in college. This season, junior Jayli Wilt had to fill the shoes of two college-bound pitchers who graduated last year, and she’s done so with poise and determination that sets her apart from the rest.

In her first year as the ace of the varsity team, Jayli Wilt has hit the ground running, helping to keep the Raiders at the top of the softball world in the area. But her success hasn’t come overnight. Wilt is a student of the game, soaking up knowledge from those who came before her and preparing herself for the moment when her time would come.

What sets Wilt apart is her patience. While she could have been a four-year pitcher at many other schools, she bided her time, waiting for her opportunity to shine. Now, she’s being rewarded for her patience with one of the best debut seasons you’ll see.

But Wilt isn’t just a force on the mound; she’s also a threat at the plate. Like most elite players in the game, she isn’t a one-trick pony. Her batting average of .434, with 1 home run, 24 RBIs, and 10 doubles, speaks to her ability to make an impact on both sides of the ball.

On the mound, Wilt has been nothing short of dominant. In 101 innings pitched, she boasts a flawless 19-0 record with an impressive 167 strikeouts and a minuscule 1.57 ERA. And at the plate, she’s equally impressive, with only four strikeouts in 76 at-bats.

Despite her already impressive debut season, Wilt continues to get better every time she steps on the field. With plenty left to accomplish this season and another year with the Raiders ahead, Wilt promises to solidify herself into the lore of South Range softball and leave a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
