WARRIORS CONTAIN LEOPARDS; START OFF 1-0

BROOKFIELD, OH – The 2020 high school football season finally got underway Friday night with the Liberty Leopards traveling north to Brookfield to take on the Warriors but unfortunately the game was postponed until tonight with 1:21 left in the first quarter as the Warriors were leading 7-6.

Brookfield struck first Friday night thanks to a Haden Gibson touchdown run from eight yards out. Liberty then wasted no time answering on their next possession as Chris Cunningham took the handoff 80 yards to the house before the postponement occurred.

As we got back underway tonight, the Warriors took over and controlled the entire football game on both sides ball as they proceeded to score 28 unanswered points en route to a 35-12 victory. During that run, Teandre Craig had a rushing touchdown from one yard out and Isaiah Jones had a receiving touchdown on a 30 yard back shoulder fade.

Up next for Liberty (0-1) will be another road test as they will travel to Newton Falls (0-0) to take on the Tigers next Friday night.

Up next for Brookfield (1-0) will be the first road game of the year as they will travel up to Leavittsburg to take on the Vikings of LaBrae (1-0).

CLIPPERS SURVIVE WARRIOR RALLY, FRANKEN MAKES HISTORY

COLUMBIANA, OH- Columbiana raced out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter before Brookfield took control and closed to within one point, only to come up short here at Firestone Park as the Clippers came away with a 24-23 victory. Clipper kicker Colin Schick opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter. Then, senior signal-caller Jakob Cross continued his dual-threat assault scoring on a 70-yard run and firing a strike to Hunter Zentner from 20 yards out to give the Clippers a 17-point cushion in this key non-league matchup. But Brookfield would turn the tide before the half and trailed 17-7 going to the locker room.

Brookfield would hit several big plays in the second half turning short passes into long gains while quarterback Haden Gibson knifed his way through the defense on the ground. However, after cutting the lead to 17-15 in the fourth quarter with momentum clearly on their side, the
Warriors elected to do something most teams have avoided in 2019. They gave dangerous Clipper return man Joey Bable a chance to make a play, and he did just that taking the ensuing kickoff 90-yards for a touchdown to push it back to a two-score lead. Crowned homecoming
king at halftime, Bable rescued the Clippers with his scintillating run down the sideline. After cutting the lead down to one, the Warriors were on the move again late in the fourth quarter. But with less than three minutes remaining Chase Franken’s interception on the Clipper
fifteen staved off a potential go-ahead score. Coach Bob Spaite then rolled the dice calling a deep pass out of a power formation for a crucial first down.

Down to one timeout, Coach Randy Clark instructed his Brookfield defense to allow a Clipper touchdown which would give the Warriors a chance to get the ball back and potentially tie it at the end of regulation. He did not count on the savvy senior Franken sensing the situation and giving himself up inside the Warrior ten, which allowed the Clippers to take a knee and survive.

Columbiana (4-3) hosts Wellsville in a key Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference game next week. Both teams will need a victory in that one to keep their playoff hopes alive. Join us on YSNLive.com for the action.

Game note: Clippers standout Chase Franken became Columbiana’s leader in career receiving yards to go along with his career receiving TD record.

WARRIORS COME OUT TO PLAY, OUTLAST REBELS

COLUMBIANA, OH –  The Rebels were looking for progress in their season after putting up 21 points against a tough Southern Local Indians team. The Rebels found difficulty all night facing a strong Brookfield team racking up 8 total touchdowns against the Rebel defense. Warriors Running Back Tyler Briggs scored a total of 3 touchdowns in the winning effort. The Warrior offense would gain 591 yards on offense with 380 yards coming from passing.
The Warriors would score first after Brookfield Quarterback Haden Gibson was able to find the end zone from 2 yards out to make the game 7-0. Crestview would answer early in the 2nd quarter after Crestview Wide Receiver Brandon Yanssens would get the direct snap and rush forward for a touchdown to tie the game. The Warriors would regain the lead after a 32-yard pass from Running Back Tyler Briggs to Wide Receiver Gage Emery in the back of the end zone would give Warriors the 14-7 lead. Brookfield would increase their lead after a 70-yard reception by Wide Receiver Dakota King down the sideline to make the game 21-7. Brookfield would score once more before the half after Briggs would rush for 3 yards to make the lead 28-7 at halftime. In the Third Quarter, Briggs would score his third touchdown for the Warriors with a 5-yard touchdown making the game 35-7.
Crestview gained some momentum in the Third Quarter after a 78-yard kick return from the Rebel’s William Hardenbrook, Running Back Ethan Powell scored from 6 yards out to make the score, 35-14. Brookfield would seal their victory in the 2nd half after scoring 3 additional touchdowns to make their point total for the game to 56. The Rebels would score one more time in the 4th Quarter after an 11-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Cusick to Yanssens would add 7 more points.
