CARDINAL MOONEY WINS ITS 500TH GAME

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney has arguable the most prestigious football programs in the area. One walk inside the Mooney gym will quickly reveal the state level type of success the Cardinals have had over the years. Friday night was a special night for not just the players on the current roster, but every player and coach that has come through the door. Mooney’s 37-0 win over Youngstown East gave the program its 500th win in its illustrious history.

Ashton O’Brien continued to impress and grow throughout the season. He was able to escape the picker and make plenty of plays down the field. A big highlight was a touchdown pass that threaded the needle to Carlos Gomez.  Noah Thomas was a hard runner all night. He scored a couple touchdowns on his way to a great performance.

Mooney now Carrie’s a two game winning streak into week 7. They will host Brush at Mineral Ridge on Friday.  East will stay at home to host Howkand on Friday night.

FALCONS TOP MOONEY IN STRAIGHT SETS

Coming off a thrilling and dramatic five set win against The Louisville Leopards the night prior, The Austintown Fitch Falcons welcomed in Cardinal Mooney for their first and only match with The Cardinals this season! Mooney came in with a mix of experience and new faces, one name that always shines bright is, multiple sport athlete, Maria Fire! Along with Fire, Mooney brought in some good height that has caused issues for so many offenses at the net this year.

However, a motivated and determined Falcons squad would not be denied on Thursday. Coming in with supreme focus, Fitch looked sharp from the first serve. Speaking of which, Austintown compiled some phenomenal serves across the board, making all the difference against The Cardinals. Wisely, in an attempt to counteract the height the Mooney possesses, The Falcons worked the ball to the outsides with Rylie Simons setting up dimes to the tune of 23 assists, forcing Mooney’s block attempts to fall out of bounds.

Jocelyn Jourdan had double figures in kills once again, putting her 44 away from breaking the program’s all time record (989, Sarah Obradavich). However, the phenomenal freshman play of Kylie Folkwein made all the difference. With a total of 11 aces behind the service line, Folkwein  now has 17 in two games, bringing her season total to 34!

Mooney (6-6) will have an opportunity to get back in the win column; however, the task will not come easy with The Cardinals taking the bus ride down to Berlin Center to do battle with The Western Reserve Blue Devils (8-4). That matchup is slated for Monday, September 26th.

The win keeps Fitch (12-1) rolling, but no rest for the weary, as Austintown travels to Girard (11-2) who is coming off a big win against Lakeview. That match will also occur on Monday, September 26th and will be on YSN!

STACY STEPS IN, AND STEPS UP

YOUNGSTOWN OH- One of the themes of Cardinal Mooney volleyball this season is same faces, different places. Although the Cardinals return a ton of members of last season’s rosters, many of them have been asked to step in to either larger, or different roles. Taking over one of the most important roles on the floor is senior Addison Stacy.

Addison knew coming in to the season how much work it was going to take to become a solid varsity setter. Trying to fill the shoes of Angelina Rotunno I’d not a easy task.  However, Stacy took a bunch of time learning from Rotunno while she was around, and now she felt confident that she can run the Cardinals offense. Rotunno came in during the summer and helped out with everything she could. The biggest step for Stacy was to create a bond and rhythm with the hitters that she’d be setting to. Now as we start the second half of the season, you can see the advancement that she has made finding connections with all her hitters.

Stacy currently sits at 225 assists on the season. With an average of 6.4 assists per set, Stacy is definitely finding a groove.  She is also no slouch on defense. Stacy currently ranks 3rd on the team in digs with 89.

Stacy was kind enough to take time and chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. They talk about her stepping in to this big role, what makes Mooney such a strong family, and so much more. Share your support with the Mooney volleyball team and check out the latest Player Profile only on YSN.

MOONEY DEFENSE DENIES COUGARS

MINERAL RIDGE OH- The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals, coming off a heartbreaking defeat to The Boardman Spartans in week one by a score of 10-7, were looking to right the ship for week two. On a rare Saturday night game, The Cardinals welcomed in The Cougars from Mentor Lake Catholic. Both teams went into the evening looking for their first win, and both looked primed to be tough defenses to crack.

An opening drive fumble from The Cougars allowed Mooney to take over on their own side of the field, as Mentor Lake Catholic was driving into enemy territory. Adyn Paige broke open the scoring for Mooney, gaining a touchdown with his legs, allowing Mooney to take a 7-0 lead after the made PAT by Pregibon. A response touchdown from The Cougars and a missed PAT kept it 7-6 Mooney until the final minutes of the first half. A touchdown pass from Ashton O’Brien to Alec DelSignore extended The Cardinal lead; however, Fitzgerald became a huge target for The Cougars. Grabbing a third down conversion catch, a touchdown and a 2pt conversion on the next drive, Trinetti found Fitzgerald to even the game up 14-14.

Mooney took the short clock as a challenge, getting some big plays to set themselves up for the 2 for 1, as Pregibon kicked a field goal to put The Cardinals up going into halftime. Out of the half, Mooney had the opening kickoff. The first two Mooney drives were met with an interception and a punt, both of which gave Mentor Lake Catholic field position on The Cardinals side of the field. But the defense of The 8-Time State Champions showed up in a big way, pushing them out of field goal range both times and shutting out The Cougars offense in the second half. A phenomenal pass from O’Brien to Ty Reali of Mooney set up another touchdown, before going right back to the house on an Ashton O’Brien faker, giving Mooney a 31-14 lead and a win.

The Cougars (0-2) will now look to bounce back in week three, as they are set to face Akron Buchtel (0-2) in another battle of teams looking for win #1! Mooney will renew their old Youngstown rivalry once again, as they host The Chaney Cowboys (2-0) on Friday, September 2nd in what looks to be nothing short of hard hitting.
