A.O.B. IS A-OK!

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- It doesn’t take very long to look at Cardinal Mooney film and see that junior QB, Ashton O’Brien is the straw that stirs the drink on offense.

With his creativity to make big-time throws and race past defenders- AOB is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the Mahoning Valley.  Not to mention, his smarts and general football IQ are off the charts.

So when you throw in an Offensive Coordinator like Rick Shepas, and a Head Coach like Carl Pelini- O’Brien gets more dangerous to defenses each and every week.

We sat down with AOB to talk about life at Mooney in the hallways and on the gridiron on this week’s Player Profile: AOB is A-OK!

NEVER AN EASY DAY AT THE BEACH

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Anytime an offensive line lines up against standout Defensive Tackle, Caleb Beachum, it’s probably going to be a long day at work.

Beachum who punches in at 5’11, 235 on the roster has turned into a beast on the interior line for Cardinal Mooney Cardinals.

While his demeanor on the field is a “leave no prisoners” mantra, his personality off the field keeps his teammates in stitches, and not the kind that hurt.  Beachum is talked about always with a smile and typically a laugh- known for his jokes and antics, he’s the Cardinal that keeps things light for his teammates.  However, between the lines- Beachum is all business.

We caught up with the senior Red Bird to talk about life at Mooney, on and off the field in this week’s Player Profile: Never an Easy Day at the Beach.

MOONEY MAKES THEIR RETURN TO STATE

WARREN OH- Mooney came in to Saturdays Regional Final looking to get back to the state tournament. After punching a ticket in 2020, the Cardinals had a disappointing overtime loss to Crestview last season to end their year. Almost immediately, Mooney got hungry to get right back. They brought back just about everyone that made big contributions in their run. Throughout the year, Mooney faced every challenge their schedule had to face with precision and focus. That is how they handled this matchup with Beachwood, and that’s why they came away with a 2-0 victory.

The first half both teams were feeling each other out. Both programs feature excellent defense, and they proved it. There were only 5 combined shots on goal in the first half. Beachwood had 3, Mooney had 2.  As the wind gusted in the second half, Mooney took advantage of going with it.  They scored two goals in two minutes in a quick strike. The first one came from Angel Alvarez in the 51st minute, then just a minute later Mason Janis netted the Cardinals second goal.

Mooney advances to their second state semifinal in three seasons. They’ll square off with Ottawa Hills on Wednesday at 7:00. That game will take place at Sandusky Perkins High School, the host of Ottawa Hills win over United in the regional semifinals.

CARDINALS ARE ROAD WARRIORS IN THE PLAYOFFS

CRESTON, Ohio –

In a battle of two of the top offenses in region 17, it was defense and special teams that proved to be the difference.

Making their second hour plus trip in as many weeks, the 13 seeded Cardinal Mooney Cardinals (6-6) made the long trek to Creston to take on the number 5 seed Norwayne Bobcats (8-4).

Late in the first quarter, Norwayne was set up for a thirty-yard field goal to take an early lead, but a low lined kick would be bated down by a Mooney defender to keep the score knotted at zero. The ensuing drive for Mooney would result in the Cardinals having to settle for their own thirtyyarder, however this operation would prove to be successful, ending in Nick Pregibon kicking it through for the opening lead of the night less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Norwayne would respond with scores on their next two possessions, a twenty-yard field goal and a sixteen-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Elijah Stanley to running back Jake Gill from sixteen yards out with just thirty-three seconds left in the opening half. The Bobcats would take a 10-3 lead into the break.

Starting with the ball to open the second half, Mooney would take a good return to their own forty yard to set up Ashton O’Brien and the Cardinal offense with favorable field position on their opening drive. O’Brien and company needed just over a minute and half to move the ball down the field and knot things up at 10, thanks to anO’Brien to Adyn Paige sixteen-yard touchdownpass on a wheel route in the endzone.

Mooney would score once more in the third quarter to take their first lead since the early moments of the second quarter, this time it was O’Brien’s legs that did the job, as he plunged one in from a yard out after connecting with Alec DelSignore over the middle at the goal line.

Ahead by a score, the Mooney defense continued to stiffen the Bobcats offense. After a huge stand on fourth down to turn Norwayne over, the Cardinal offense went back to work and extended their lead to two scores on an O’Brien to DelSignore four-yard touchdown with just a few ticks over six minutes left in the game.

Down but not out, the Bobcats willed their way back into the ball game. Staring fourth down and manageable with the ball in their own half, Norwayne quarterback Elijah Stanley stood tall in the pocket and delivered a down field strike to Jake Gill from fifty-six-yards out for their second scoring connection of the night, drawing the Bobcats to within a possession.

After an unconventional onside kick attempt that saw the Norwayne kicker line the ball into open space down the field with Mooney all pressed forward towards the line scrimmage, the Cardinals were able to narrowly recover and retain possession. The Cardinals were unable to finish the game out on the ground and were forced to punt the ball back to the Bobcats, who would take over with just under three minutes remaining in their own territory.

Gill would will the ball down the field for Norwayne catching passes and taking handoffs for big chunks, as the Bobcats offense would get all the way down to the Mooney four-yard line with less than a minute to go. After a huge tackle for loss on second down and one, Norwayne would have a false start penalty on third down to back them up five before firing an incomplete pass just shy of Stanley’s intended receiver.

Fourth down and seven, ball resting on Mooney’s tenyard line the game came down to one final play. Stanley would take the shotgun snap and fire a pass across the middle that would be tipped by senior linebacker Logan Boyd, forcing the pass to fall incomplete but a marker was down. After a lengthy conference, the officials would wave off the flag for pass interference thanks to Boyd’s hand on the football. When the Cardinals needed it most, it was the senior linebacker who stepped up and made a play. One kneel down later, and the Cardinals escaped with the victory, 24-17.

REGIONAL SEMI-FINALS

Winning two playoff games in the same year for the first time since 2013, the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals have set themselves up for a valley dream matchup against the South Range Raiders (12-0). The Raiders were able to take care of business against the Liberty Leopards 35-6 in the opening round, before taking it to the Garfield G-Men 49-10 in the second round.

PREGIBON’S HAT TRICK ADVANCES MOONEY

BOARDMAN OH- Cardinal Mooney didn’t miss a beat on Wednesday night in their regional semifinal matchup. After dropping out of the tournament earlier than expected last season, the Cardinals have been hungry to prove what they can do this season. Their opponent Wickliffe couldn’t keep up in a 4-0 Mooney victory.

Junior Nick Pregibon was a force to be reckoned with.  His first goal came about half way through the first half. Once the first goal was scored, any nerves that Mooney had washed away.  They stayed on the attack the rest of the game. Even though Wickliffe withstood the storm for a while, with 15 minutes left in the second half, Mooney blasted three goals.  Pregibon scored two more, and Mason Janis added one in the final seconds.

With the win Mooney has advanced to the regional championship.  They’ll square up with Beachwood on Saturday at 4:00 at Howland High School.

TSAMAS GETS HERSELF TO REGIONALS

CANTON OH- Cardinal Mooney’s stand out runner Sylvia Tsamas had a great showing at the Division III Northeast District meet over the weekend at Csnton GlenOak.  Tsamas placed 5th to earn a spot in the upcoming regional meet.  The entire cross country team will train with her over the week to help get her ready for the challenge ahead. Everyone at YSN wish Sylvia the best of luck moving forward.

URSULINE OWNS THE NIGHT; HOLDS OFF MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- There’s not much that Ursuline can do these days that they haven’t done before.  Last night was not one of those nights, as the Irish did defeat Cardinal Mooney for the fourth consecutive time- a feat that had not been accomplished in the nearly seven decades leading up to this year’s matchup by a final score of 13-7.

However, it wasn’t easy.

These games rarely are.

Ursuline came out looking like they were going to roll their cross-town rivals jumping out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter.  Jack Ericson scampered up the middle for 20-yards to put the Irish up 2 scores in the opening stanza, and the way it would remain all the way to the second half.

Coming out of the locker room, Mooney had a spark.  Following an electric kickoff return by the Cardinals, Junior QB Ashton O’Brien quickly connected with Alec Delsignore to get him involved in the offense, which would include a 15-yard strike from AOB to Delsignore to bring the game within 3.  O’Brien would finish 13-21 for 151 yards with that score, and three interceptions.

Ursuline would rack up 358 yards of offense, but was held to only one trip to the endzone in the contest- something that was out of the ordinary for this up-tempo offensive juggernaut.

Mooney would have opportunities to tie or take the lead throughout the second half, but the stout Irish defense led by Ty’Req Donlow would stomp out the flames that the Cardinals continued to fan.  Donlow supplied one of the biggest plays of the game late in the contest when he chased down Ashton O’Brien on a third and short for a loss of 13.

The Irish finish the season 8-2 and await finalization of the bracket with West Branch and Salem’s contest on Saturday night which has secondary point implications for Canfield and other teams in the region.  Mooney finishes a tough schedule at 4-6 and projects to be in the playoffs on the road next Friday night.

YSN will have both playoff games available along with many others with the Playoff Power Pass on October 28th.

POLAND POWERS THROUGH TO NEXT ROUND

CORTLAND OH- Tournament time has officially arrived which means it’s time to separate the ones that will keep their season going from the ones that have to pack it in. Poland didn’t want to say goodbye just yet. They swept Mooney is three competitive sets to move on to the next round. (26-24 25-23 26-24)

Sarah Forsyth led the Bulldogs offense by collecting 12 kills on the night.  Morgan Bailey set the offense well all night setting up 13 assists, and also serving 2 aces.  Madelyn Ray led the Poland defense with 10 digs. Katie McDonald was a force at the net hammering 4 blocks.

Poland moves on to play conference rival Lakeview for the third time this season on Thursday at Crestview.  It will be the second game of the night starting at approximately 7:30.  Mooney ends the season with a record of 8-14.

TURNER BRINGS HOME FIRST PLACE FINISH AT STATE

COLUMBUS OH- It was a great day for Cardinal Mooney golf as they added a State Champion to their ranks. Rocco Turner shot a two round total a 145 to claim the crown. His Round 1 total was a 74, and he improved his score by three strokes in Round 2 to submit a 71.  Dante Turner was next best on Mooney with a total of 176.  Alex Eckstein was also sub 200 shooting a 183 at state.  Tim Reardon, and Joe Zeno rounded out the scores shooting a 219 and a 254 respectively.

Everyone at YSN would like to congratulate the entire Mooney golf team on a fantastic season.  We look forward to more success come next fall.
