CCC had no answer for Michael Pelini as he rolled his way to 36 points to lead the Cardinals. He hit six threes on the night, and had 21 of his points at the halftime break. Mick Hergenrothee was also in double figures with 10 points.

MOONEY WITH A BIG WIN OVER BIG RED

YOUNGSTOWN OH- After a big 59-43 win on Saturday against the Western Reserve Blue Devils, the Cardinals were going to play against the Valley Christian Eagles.  That was until the game was cancelled due to COVID concerns with Valley Christian as Mooney made a last second change to host the Steubenville Big Red who were coming off a 86-55 victory against the Catholic Central Crusaders.

Steubenville got off to an early start, but Mooney came right back early in the first leading 19-13 and never looked back as the full court press was tough for Steubenville to find any room.  Mooney would cruise to a 69-52 victory.

The Cardinals were led by Mick Hergenrother who had 12pts in the first half and finished with a high 22pts while making a big impact on defense stealing the basketball like it was candy.  Thomas Fire had nine points in the first half and had to leave the game for a bit with an injury.  However Fire came back and was on Fire finishing with 20 pts.  Michael Pelini had a tough first half but got the momentum rolling as he finished with 15pts.  Other Cardinals who got on the board were Jack Pepperney with seven points, James Campbell with two points, Lawrence Williams and Drew Pecchia finishing with two points.

For Steubenville, they had a lot of turnovers in this game and it was hard for them shooting wise.  Cade Kernahan and Phaeton Hill finished with two points.  Zion Sawyer finished with 13 points, Chase Zimmerman had a three and a two finishing with six points along with Ivan Buggs who also had six.  Andrew Gresko and Quinn McCoy finished with eight points, and Brenten Jones with seven points.

Up Next: Cardinal Mooney (2-0) as of now is scheduled to play Austintown Fitch (0-2) on Friday.  Steubenville (1-1) will regroup and for now if there are negative tests will play Minerva (1-1) who are coming off of a 56-40 loss to Salem next Tuesday and may even pick up a game beforehand.

MOONEY STAYS UNBEATEN WITH COMEBACK WIN

YOUNGSTOWN OH-The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals were looking to move to 3-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season, but in order to do that, they’d have to get past a South Range team who was looking for their first win of the 2020 season.  Both teams were neck and neck throughout the first half with South Range leading 21-17 at the half.  In the fourth, South Ranged looked to go up, but a missed layup at the last second gave the Cardinals their third win of the season while the Raiders fell to 0-4.

Mooney Stats: Michael Pelini led the dangerous Cardinals with 22 points, hitting two three-pointers and scoring seven two’s.  Thomas Fire certainly was on fire with 14 points going 6-8 from the free-throw line.  Mick Hergenrougher continued his dominance spree on defense as well as offense with 10 points, doing some NBA moves, and Jack Desmond has two points.

South Range Stats: Michael Patrone finished with nine points, Brandon Mikos had 16 points, Nate Brown had four, Eli Taylor finished with 13, Luke Crumbacher with two points, and Corey Penick with one.

Up Next: Cardinal Mooney (3-0) as of now is set to play Boardman (2-0) on Friday unless things change.  South Range (0-4) will play Struthers (2-0) Tuesday unless there is a Covid postponement or cancellation.

CARDINALS EDGE COLUMBIANA LATE

COLUMBIANA OH – It was senior night for the Columbiana Clippers coming off a loss last week looking to bounce back against the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. The Clippers would come up short after Mooney surged in the second quarter on both sides of the ball with assistance from Guard/Forward Katie Hough. Hough reached double digits in points in the winning effort.

Columbiana had the lead after the first quarter 16-8 thanks in part by Guard Grace Witmer and Guard Tori Long with free throws and a few backdoor passes that led to field goals. The Clippers led in rebounds in the first quarter thanks to Addison Zohnd who stopped any second chance shots by Mooney on the defensive side. Second quarter both teams closed the gap with tight defense. Both teams only allowed 9 points each going into halftime but it was Columbiana who went into the locker room leading 25-17.
Third quarter Hough got going in a big way for the Cardinals. Helping them to claim the lead for the first time with 5 minutes left in the quarter after an 8-0 run. Hough and Mooney led going into the final quarter 35-30. The Clippers made it interesting in the fourth quarter closing the gap to 4 points but Mooney would come away with the victory. The Cardinals beat the Clippers 46-41.
